It's shitty advice for poor people because all the relatively inexpensive pre-builts either have dogshit internals or shitty mix matched specs that don't really make sense for the price you're paying.
You're going to be wasting just as much time doing tech support if it arrives and is already broken or doesn't take long to get there.
I just tell people the same thing. I show them a basic dell, then i show them the graphics card that will turn it into something that isnt a waste of time. No reason you have to pay more than 400 for a tower that can legit play real games. I recommend building your own pc if you have a budget in mind or just want to learn from the experience. But, if you have the money to blow and don’t want to waste your time, then buying a prebuilt is fine.
I’d just recommend to do your research and find the best company to go with reliability and customer support wise. Some places don’t provide part customization which can be a deal breaker if you want specific brand parts.

Used to think ppl who bought prebuilts were suckers then i got busy with work and didn't wanna spend 4 hrs assembling my pc anymore. And don't even talk about troubleshooting if something goes wrong could be up to 10 hrs depending on the issue.
I have counsels and a swtich for games, so all I need a computer for is buying stuff, youtube, facebook, and a few other niche sites so I don't need some crazy spec'd out computer
Once I had kids and a career I just got a laptop and an xbox that I use like twice a month.
Honestly I've found the only people who really understand computers are Silicon valley nerds or those bottom of the iceberg ultraspergs. Talking with console war and "PC mustard race" people I found nobody can actually tell you what the differences are with stuff like i3 processor and i7 vs AMD or why PS4 had like 8gb DDR3 RAM and Xbox had 4gb DDR5 and what that actually meant. Stuff like that. Even the autistic people I know who made real money using Runescapes stock market and running scripts and stuff, they tried to help me build a computer but were mocked in the store by the Asian spergs behind the counter for choosing incompatible pieces for my computer.
Computer building IS actually easy- literally legos, especially if you're using a parts-picking guide/youtube video.
Sorry if I would rather spend two hours of my time working with my hands than pay some indian dude a 30% markup to do it for me, but Sammy has to go with the Tateism non-advice, "just make so much money that it's not an issue". Sam makes a really good point about prebuilts but misses the fact that if you buy parts individually and when they're on sale you end up saving a lot of money, including the hours spent of your time putting it together
My 7900x/3090 system cost a fraction of what a prebuilt of the same specs would have cost me. I saved at least $500 at minimum
That's only if you're able to buy parts over time, if you need a pc NOW then just get a prebuilt.

Everyone is at a different skill level and so building a computer can take an hour or hours. I've been building computers since 2010 and I always advise people to buy a prebuilt from a reputable brand if they haven't built a computer before. Most people get through the gimmic of building their first computer and quickly realise it's fucking boring, time consuming, and becomes another thing you have to monitor once built.
It’s simple. If you know what you’re doing then build your own computer. If you don’t know what you’re doing, then buy a prebuilt at a high markup. It’s how the world works.

Building a pc is easy
dude, it's literally 7 parts: CPU, GPU, motherboard, RAM, storage drive (SSD), case, powersupply. then you have to consider: does the motherboard fit in the case and support the other components (cpu type and RAM speed, mainly)? is the powersupply wattage high enough to power all the individual component's wattage added together? that's pretty much it, then all the pieces fit together like LEGO, so does the powersupply cabling, download an OS, use a basic utility on another computer to load the OS onto a USB stick and make it bootable, then turn on your new PC and install it.

I tried to build my first PC. Dead ram and a dead ram slot on the motherboard made it impossible to even trouble shoot without my friend helping me. Now a fan is already malfunctioning and it has been sitting unused for months. Never doing that shit again.
Don't buy garbage parts from a bargain bin and that won't happen.
A friend helped me build my PC. He's autistic, built his PC and messes around with the BIOS and stuff like that but even he messed up and picked out incompatible parts at one of the big brand computer stores here and it was the super sperg Asian student behind the counter who mocked him for it. I've found you have to either work serious IT like in defense or developing circuit boards or you have to be one of those "low functioning bottom of the iceberg" spergs to really understand computers and the differences with processors, motherboards, DDR3 vs DDR5 RAM etc. Even channels dedicated to talking about GPUs just list numbers and can't actually explain the differences in laymans terms.

Building a PC is definitely a pain in the ass, I've done it twice. I was sweating with rage both times, and it never worked in one day there is always troubleshooting when something goes wrong, or waiting for a new part to come online.
Buy all your parts beforehand, don't buy garbage, make sure it's all compatible and you shouldn't have any issues.

As someome who's built PCs and games on PC: The only reason why I burnt so much damn money is because it's my retarded hobby/ I work in computing so building, care and maintenance is good practice for me and helps me keep on my toes as well as learn new stuff. I'd actually recommend a console for gaming since it's so much cheaper and simpler and for all that office stuff just get a laptop.

Prebuilts have poor build quality, shitty PSUs, proprietary parts that you can't easily replace, severely limited upgrade options, the list goes on. I'd hate for Nick to get scammed by Dell or HP all because he wanted to save a bit of time.
