As a Detroit Red Wings fan I can explain Al The Octopus a little bit. 1. In the old days of hockey, teams would only have to win 8 games during the playoffs to win the cup. As an octopus has 8 legs it became a tradition in Detroit to throw octopi on the ice during playoff games. 2. Al the octopus is named after the building operations manager, Al Sobotka, who used to pick up the octopuses thrown onto the ice and wave it over his head, it really pumps up the crowd. But the NHL being the NHL brought an end to that when they started giving us delay of game penalties
Jacob Charlebois I’m a Blackhawks fan, but if this channel is taking shots at the octopus then theses guys have NO credibility. The octopus is iconic to nhl history
On the LA Kings old uniforms they had a crest on the side with two lions on it. That's why Bailey is a lion. His name is Bailey in honor of Garnet Bailey. He was a former LA Kings scout who died in the 9/11 attacks.
This might be a little late and someone might have already said it but if not i feel like it needs to be said. Bailey of the LA Kings is named after a scout named Garnet Bailey for the team that died in the attacks of 9/11. The mascot wears 72 because it is the average temperature in LA
the back story about Yoopi is that he was the Montreal Expos mascot in baseball, but ever since the team got ripped, he became the Montreal Canadiens mascot
Watch the video of Hunter (the Oilers mascot) pulling out Harvey's tongue I find it hilarious P.S I'm an Oilers fan and I agree I don't mind the Harvey mascot
The Islanders mascot, Sparky the Dragon is a dragon because an arena football team, the Long Island Dragons used to play at Nassau Coliseum and Sparky was their mascot as well.
It's Gnash not Nash. Very good mascot. Lvining in Nashville area and after now seeing the rest of the league's mascots...I think... how could a major sports league allow such TERRIBLE mascots. Most of them are worst than middle school mascots.
I may be biased, but Gnash is so cool! Seriously, he drives around on an ATV on the ice, swings around the stadium before the game starts, stands on 20 ft ladders waving signs, and his Twitter is fantastic!

ultraknight123 Kind of rude to call someone that. Maybe the person was scrolling in the comment section and saw what you had commented. And most likely it was his first time watching this video.
Funny story, I was at a Stars game and I was buying a stuffed Victor E. Green for my little cousin and the girl asked if I thought he was a booger. Apparently a lot of people thought he was a booger (?) but I learned that “he’s an alien, you know, from the STARS”. I thought it was pretty clever.
Al the Octopus is named after Al Sobotka the Building Operations manager from back at JLA and at LCA today he is the guy who when an octopus is thrown on the ice during the playoffs, which symbolizes the 8 games you originally needed to win to win the cup, and spins it over his head to pump up the crowd on his way off the ice.
The mustache on the panthers mascot was there just for "Movember." The panther mascots name is Stanley C. in honor of Lord stanley and the stanley cup. I know, ironic that our mascot is named after the cup, but the team won't see it in franchise history lol
The wings named the octopus Al because of their arena manager Al Sobotka. The throwing of the octopus started April 15, 1952, when Pete and Jerry Cusimano, brothers and storeowners in Detroit's Eastern Market, threw an octopus into the rink of Olympia Stadium and Detroit went on to win the cup, so thats how the tradition of the octopus started
Al the octopus got its name from Al Sobotka the head ice manager for the Red Wings. Common Red Wings tradition is to throw octopi on the ice during the game (usually after a big goal or when the game is almost over and it's obvious the Wings will win). Al Sobotka used to twirl the octopi while carrying them off the ice and the crowd always loved it. So they decided to make a giant octopus the official mascot of the Red Wings and name it after him.
Youppi! started off as a mascot for the Montreal Expos. The most iconic moment for that mascot was when he got ejected from a baseball game. After the Expos moved to DC and became the Nationals, Youppi! moved to the Canadiens and became their mascot.
Love these videos. I know it's all subjective but they're good lists. Plus, they show what each team has. It's a look around the league for those of us that can't make it around the US and Canada. Keep it up! GO KINGS GO!!!!
octopus started and always have been Detorit's playoff good luck charm, and seeing as how the most you ever see of Al is as said inflatable/statue or on animated bits on titantrons, i really wouldn't call him a mascot. But I think it'd be awesome if we had some cthulu looking mascot with a wings jersey walking around.
As a Preds fan I was never really a fan of Gnash but after the game with the Wild last Saturday and seeing all he can do, I've changed my opinion. Very interactive with the crowd. He was all over the arena and even came to our section in the third level (with a spokesman because he doesn't speak) with a woman having a birthday and the whole section sung Happy Birthday to this woman. He also repels from the arena ceiling before the Preds hit the ice and has some wicked dance moves along with riding around the ice on various vehicles. So, yeah, I now like Gnash.
You guys know about the rats in Florida but not the octopi in Detroit? Really? And it's named Al cause that's the name of the guy who picks up the octopi and zambonis the ice.....
Carlton the bear is named Carlton because Maple Leaf Gardens is on Carlton Street in Toronto. Fin is a Killer Whale! Come on man! My FAVORITE mascot is SJ SHARKIE!

In the early years of the Blue Jackets there was green trim on the logo. Also their original logo was to be that hornet on it, but was switched out months before the inaugural season, as recommended by team management.
Don't know if you guys will see this but Bailey from the La Kings is given that name, in memory of Garnet Bailey (who was at the time the director of pro scouting for LA) who sadly passed onboard a flight during the 9/11 attacks.
It's named al because of our operations manager Al Sobotka. He is known for grabbing the octopi off the ice surface and swinging it around over his head. When he does this the fans go absolutely nuts. Best tradition in sports... not being biased 😂
I'm a habs fan so I know Youpi's backstory. He used to be the Expos mascot but when they left Montreal they left him behind, so the habs took him in as their new mascot.

Al the octopus got his name from Al Sobotka the Building Manager for both Joe Louis and Little Caesars Arena... When an octopus is thrown on the ice, Al (the manager) will pick it up and twirl it around his head. -Jordan Born and Bred Detroit fan
The LA Kings mascot, Bailey, is named after one of the kings employee, Ace Bailey, who was killed in 9/11. It may not be the fiercest name ever but it has a very meaningful purpose
The reason why the red wings mascot is named “al” because al Sobokta is the operations manager at Detroit and has been since they opened joe Louis. And still there to this day. He’s been there a long time so that’s why.
Al the Octopus is named after the legendary Rink Manager Al Sobotka. It only appears during the playoffs when it gets lowered down to the ice and the fans go crazy.
Stinger is green because he's supposed to be a normal yellow jacket but then he met the Blue Jackets and his yellow skin mixed with the blue from the blue jackets and blue and yellow makes green so there!
Stinger, Gnash, Slapshot and Wildwing. Also, when Stinger first debuted he was more yellow than he is now. I heard that the CBJ tried to infuse some blue into him and that's how he ended up the shade of green that he currently is. The Jackets also had a cannon mascot named Boomer. He didn't last long.
Sparky(NYI) was actually the mascot of the former AFL team, the Long Island Dragons, hence why he is a dragon. Originally being Red and Black(the Dragon's colors), the Coliseum had another costume made, bearing blue and orange. The islanders just kinda kept him, and he is loved by every single Isles fan here on Long Island.
As a Detroit Red Wings fan I can explain Al The Octopus a little bit.

Al the octopus got his name from Al Sobotka the Building Manager for both Joe Louis and Little Caesars Arena... When an octopus is thrown on the ice, Al (the manager) will pick it up and twirl it around his head.

Love Wild Wing. The big plastic thing is the goalie mask from the old sweater
I'm a red wings fan and the octupi is a traditional thing which is what they throw before a game
Love the vids man keep it up👍
Al the Octopus is named after the legendary Rink Manager Al Sobotka.
Youppi is the mascot of the Expo of Montreal (baseball) and when the expo are go away in florida Youppi became the mascot of Montreal canadian!
The islanders just kinda kept him, and he is loved by every single Isles fan here on Long Island.
you guys should do mascots of teams from any other leagues, like the OHL. The London Knights Mascot would probably be a huge thumbs up
The meaning of the name of the octopus is because the building operations manager's name is Al Sobotka
