But I don't recall seeing anything like that in the movie...

Yeah i went from having no good expectation to thinking this might be one of the best horror games ever. Looks much more promising the more gameplay i see.
I don't know if you noticed but there is a night vision mode on the camera.

The students gone missing was a reference to the movie @GameRiot
The game is based off a movie, and the movie takes place back around the 90's. That's why there's not a lot of resources you would have access to now; hence the old phone.
Also, the whole point of the game is that it takes place after the movie (in which a few kids go into this supposedly haunted forest with cameras trying to prove its haunted), so the police are trying to find one of the boys that go missing, and the police keep referring to the tapes the kids made.

so the guy has ptsd, the dog ( bullet) is a service dog, helping him to stay calm. if the dog is not at his side he starts to panic, same for sleeping. when some one with ptsd is sleeping and starts to panic the dogs are actually trained to notice this and start to wake them up. why dogs are better than cats
what does cats have to do with this? hahah

The tapes they mention is a reference to the movie they find a tape the kids record when they go into the woods to investigate the local legend of the Burkitsville witch and they all go missing the entire movie is the tape they recorded
