First off, love your videos! Please don't wear yourselves out. It's always fun to see these cool decks across the table. I'd love to see my pg play with more of these fun commandwers. I'm definitely building either Osgir or Griswold soon though. Griswold with the Assault Suit?!
I watched and followed your advice on the deckbuilding 101 video in regards to playing the 1 mana elf dorks instead of the usual 3 mana spells to go get a tapped land. My new Tovolar deck came flying out the gates and managed to kill the mill player turn 6 with overwhelming stampede.
6:45 I felt the same, but the deck that broke the mold for me was Gyruda, Doom of Depths. Playing clones to churn through your deck till your opponents spill something neat or just tossing an Ulamog into play is fantastic.
I just built Grismold and he is so much fun!! An absolute powerhouse and completely flies under the radar until you wipe all the tokens and swing lethal commander damage! I’m definitely putting assault suit in now!
Blim is definitely a 99 card, for sure. I run him in my Xantcha deck to "give" auras already on xantcha to my opponents, mainly the auras that don't care who controls it at least.
My Favorite dimir commander is the partner combo of Ghost of Ramirez DePetro and Armix, Fildagree thrasher. The combo of attacking and discarding and then dealing combat damage and getting that card back is incredible because of the discard triggers. And on top of that, you get to kill something because of the amount of mana rocks you’re playing
Veyran, Voice of Duality is also super fun for a storm setup. Pair it with thousand year storm, apex of power, and mana geyser/seething song and prepare for 20 min turns
My current favorite commander is Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle. I was looking through my cards and saw I had a bunch of big stupid sea creatures and decided to build a deck around them. I thought it would be really cumbersome and slow, but with cards like Kiora’s Follower you can cast Arixmethes on turn 3 and create 4 mana with it on turn 4. It’s been a lot better deck than I was expecting.
I have a Kinnan deck, let me just say he is nuts to the point of feeling guilt when playing him. I have won with him on turn 2 on more than one occasion. Winning like that is cool the first 1 or 2 times then you feel like a tool. Needless to say I powered it down. Nice vid as always
@@SeekerOfKnowledge87 I typically tutor for Basalt Monolith, then draw my library through something like Blue Sen Zenith or Staff of Domination. I then cast Chromatic Orrery to make my infinite mana colored, at which point I can draw out all my creatures through Kinnan or if I've already drawn most of my library just cast all my creatures from hand (which are all Eldrazi). Then I cast finale of Devastation for an insane amount and All is Dust, then swing for the win.
I get and respect your opinions on Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts but I absolutely love her for my specific EDH deck lol. It's a fun aristocratic Exquisite Blood/Sanguine Bond combo deck and it's nice to have a commander like Teysa to drop late game if necessary to help protect you till you get the combo or another alt win con. Thanks for your great videos :)
My favorite blue white commander is Yorion, the massive blinks are awesome, and the way it loops with other cards makes you so hard to pin down. Also I love value way too much. Favorite Golgari is Old Stickfingers. It can be really good in mid level formats, but it also seems like it has the potential to be incredible in cEDH (play necrotic ooze, phyrexian devourerer, and walking ballista and any reanimation spell is a one card combo kill with the cast trigger of your commander)
Of these, I briefly had Teysa as a general. It was very casual, and this was also in 2017 - so just pre-“everything is designed for commander” and pushed. She wasn’t a great (or even that good of a ) commander, but it was a fun Orzhov deck overall. Now though, the card is so incredibly outclassed, it would make no sense at all. I’m building better/more fun decks.
The best way to play Blim is using symmetrical stax pieces to slow the game down, then gift players cards like Forbidden Crypt and Immortal Coil. Nefarious Lich is a great gift because it forces that opponent to keep you alive because if you die, they die.
My best friend has a Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts deck where it’s focused on lifegain. I think it’s pretty fun to fight though it does discourage me from attacking at times but it also seems like he really enjoys playing it.
Sad to see my boy Blim on your hitlist, but I really enjoy playing him in an Act of Treason style build, it leads to some fun politics when I steal the best creature on the board and have to decide who to give it to. That way I play fewer "bad gifts" and it's more engaging for everyone.
I've been looking at him and playing him as a group hug deck. Actually giving people good things. Or neutral things that help the table like howling mine or something. This is a good idea.
@@Goodthrust69 I also run neutral effects that I can give away that work for the whole table! Things like Howling Mine, Mass Hysteria, and Endless Whispers are pretty great.
I feel as though you gotta give Tahngarth a bit more credit. I've got a Tahngarth deck and its hands down one of my favorite decks to pilot. Hes got lots of potential politicking and synergy with menace to make him unblockable AND the potential to straight up kill anyone within one turn cycle, which almost everyone agrees to if someone is running away with the game. Hes really unique and is a lot more fun than you seem to give him credit for. Also, you mentioned assault suit which is great for preventing him from getting sacked. Great video regardless, I always love your guys' content!
I play Osgir at cEDH tables and yes, he absolutely can be miserable to play against. I got a turn 1 Rule of Law, turn 2 Osgir, turn 3 Karn the Great Creator who can return cards exiled with Osgir back to your hand so I kept looping artifact lands and Sphere of Resistance so by turn 6, I’m at 12+ mana and I have 6 sphere of resistances so all spells cast 6 more. No one could cast spells while I was playing cards out of my graveyard and just ran away with the game. That was a pretty extreme example though because I had like the perfect hand but Osgir in general is pretty powerful and a very creative commander. Can be built to perform in all power levels.
Joe, taking into account how much you love playing your opponents cards against them, I think you would enjoy making a deck similar to one I used to run. Lazav, Dimir Mastermind mill/control. Every big splashy scary creature in your opponents decks becomes a potential Lazav transformation target. Throw in control magic sort of cards, reanimate stuff from everyone's graveyards, so on and so forth, and that seems like it would be right up your "play my opponents decks" alley. Not arguing that he's at or anywhere near the top for Dimir guild commanders, this is just a specific recommendation because you've said you like playing decks like that in previous videos.
@@NitpickingNerds I use Jeleva as my commander for "play my opponents cards" with Prosper, Etali & Wrexial in the 99. Hurl through Hell, Fevered Suspicion, Stolen Strategy and friends. Howl of the Horde, Galvanic Iteration and Repeated Reverberation can be cast w/ Jeleva (other copy spells can't be used effectively with Jeleva due to timing restrictions) to amplify the spells you "borrow" or 2nd main phase plays like Beacon of Unrest or Spelltwine. I specifically avoid almost all "steal" cards in the deck. Fallen Shinobi and Silent-Blade Oni also have nice synergy with Jeleva as they can bounce her to re-stock on exiled cards to cast without increasing the commander tax. 38 "hits" for Jeleva by using things like modal counter-magic (Cryptic Command, Mystic Confluence, etc) so they aren't blanks when Jeleva hits them. Jeleva also provides more fuel for some rarer effects like Ashiok, Nightmare Muse
It's really, really refreshing to hear people talk about how the new designs for commander are being done well. I feel like so often you hear people complaining about how Wizards is 'ruining the format' by designing cards specifically for commander. I think 95-99% of their designs have been absolutely killer and allowed a ton of new and interesting stuff in the format. Appreciate someone finally saying something about it.
Interesting to hear your insights on some commanders, even learned about new cards too (I first started around Darksteel and didn't play again until War of the Sparks) * Ranar: Hmm maybe I underestimated him, the precon didn't seem great to me * Eloise: She seems super interesting, seems potent * Prosper: Crazy strong * Neyith: Interesting, never heard of this one - fighting seems pretty sweet, the bottom portion reminded me of Xenagos * Trostani: She's okay, Nykthos Paragon is very scary with her * Killian: Looks super interesting, good amount of ways to go, Liesa is my Orzhov fav though, what is commander tax lol * Grismold: Very interesting, I feel like Golgari has a lot of interesting commanders that I want to try out * Volo: Super nasty, very fun deck construction, and a lot of cards people have never heard of * Brudiclad: I love tokens, I love the way it works * Ozgir: Value town in Boros, who would have known lol - I think it also helped that the precon had some very sweet value * Bonus - Niv-Mizzet: I remember building him when I wasn't satisfied with playing spellslingers with the C19 Jeskai precon - took wins with Thousand Year Storm to resolve something like a Comet Storm or Earthquake copied multiple times. I feel like the Vadrik from Midnight Hunt to be a great Izzet spell deck to play
If you're looking for weird Dimir commanders, I recommend Dralnu. And if you want to be extra spicy, try donating him to opponents so you can deal a bunch of damage to him.
My favourite Dimir commander is Vela, the Night Clad. Play her with a bunch of Devoid Eldrazi and your team can only be blocked by artifacts. Chuck some Reconnaissance Mission effects in there. Juicy!
Interesting to see so many new/recent commanders on both sides of the spectrum. It's cool that WotC are pushing new and mechanically unique cards, even though they miss the mark from time to time.
As someone whose first deck was Niv-mizzet Parun, the critique is pretty fair. I try to mitigate it by not trying to turbo out to my Curiosity, and try to focus more on wheels and some control. Granted, I still keep those cards in just in case.
I have a Niv-mizzet parun deck. I just took out curiosity type card, I totally agree that those cards does leads to victory, but a little too consistently, in which to me is my favorite part of commander. taking out 2 card infinite combo make the deck a lot more fair and make you work a lot more to set up an insane combo.
See I agree that it's a good commander, but not having red removes a lot of cool things you can do. And simic, in my opinion, is just not fun to play. Most of it is samey, you see the same cards In most decks. Brudiclad is not a common commander, and there are a lot less generic ways to abuse him like in green, but he is still a cool commander.
Ishkanah is my favorite and I honestly can't see any card ever topping her for me. Spiders were a tribe I was desperate for a good commander for pretty much since I started playing in the mid 2000s. Not only was she in my favorite set in what has become my favorite plane, she was in my favorite color combination and is a graveyard strategy commander which is my favorite playstyle. She ticks literally every box I could ever ask for. Now I just want a real Horror tribal commander and for Arachnogenesis to get a reprint so I can put it in my budget version of my Ishkanah deck.
Homie did you pronounce Prosper's race as "tie-fling" lmao it's pronounced as "tee-fling" that gave me a good laugh, great video though guys! Love Prosper
My friend casually, but unironically shuffling up his First Sliver deck looking across the table at me: "I hate Winota. Card is ridiculous and busted." I love Boros so much despite its flaws and Osgir was one of those Commanders I saw and immediately wanted to try, but put on the backburner cuz I have so many decks right now x.x How fun is he??? As always, love the content bois!
In the defence of Tahngarth, all you have to do is give it menece and it will be unblockable. Since his text says he can only be blocked by one creature, and menece says he must be double blocked, then nothing can block him so its free damage.
I have built a deck around Storrev and I loved that deck. He is a 5/4 with trample that can get you a creature or planeswalker back when it hits for 4 mana. He has a lot a value with him but I think you guys overlook it because it has to deal combat damage. It has trample and 5 power. He is going to get at least 1-2 point of damage throught to trigger. Also if you throe a couple cards making it unblockable, that 5 damage adds up. I'm not saying your evaluation is trash, I think you just need to revisit it. Sorry for the long rant
Prosper is so fun to play. It has become one of my favorite commander in an instant! Also, i have never seen that Teysa, ever. I wasn't aware of its existence at all! Osgir is the first not boros attack commander? What about fire song and sunspeaker burn?
Man I really tried to make a blim deck, and yall are right it's too hard. My play group was sad when I broke the deck up, because while its unsustainable it is a lot of fun to play with and against. My strategy was to take peoples creatures, and then pass them off to a different player after combat using blim or that goblin that taps and gives away permanent spells. It was definitely fun when it worked, because I would give commanders away to other players and create chaos
For Gruul, though it isn't as bad as Tahngarth and I quite like it as a card, Thromok, the Insatiable isn't much of a commander. I love devour and this is one of the coolest devour creatures, but it takes a lot of setup just to come out as a huge vanilla creature. It's a really plain strategy and if your opponents interfere with your setup at all, they stop you completely. And you can't do devour tribal, because devour creatures don't have room to share their food. Still, Thromok is pretty cool in the 99 of any token deck.
I know this is a year out now but what y’all think of fire mind rather than parun? He’s counter-able but has a more manageable cost, he can tap to start the infinite but that means he needs haste to start infinite out the gate so that’s 3 spells cast for about 7+ mana and all are presumably counter-able.
Niv-Mizzet/Curiosity is a lot less threatening in 3+ player games, because you're unlikely to kill all other players with the infinite combo before you draw yourself out. You need to be careful, unless you've got a Lab Maniac or Jace Wielder on board.
The mixing of reasons for best and worst in this list was jarring (i.e. best card cause of flavor worst card cause of payoff) but still a nice list! Definitely motivated me to make a new list or 2 👀
So I have had multiple Gruul decks that haven't done anything special, just Gruul creatures that attack when you draw overun. With that in mind, I don't enjoy "typical" games of magic as much as I like unique situations. Needless to say, I have an awesome Tahngarth deck that I absolutely love! People sacrifice creatures by attcking just to get Tahngarth attacking as well, and i have goad regardless. He combos with menace making sure he's never blocked. I have plenty of spot removal to remove sac outlets, and double strike can easily close out the game. There isn't even a need for board wipes, when you're Commander is unblockable, you can just kill the player instead! (PS you become a target pretty fast sometimes, so bring some protection) So the next time Wizards makes a Gruul unblockable commander, THEN you can put Tahngarth as the worst Gruul Commander. Therefore, I challenge you to make/play a Tahngarth deck on the channel.
Decks i own, i play oona different though for more fun. Azorius: Bruna Dimir: Oona Rakdos: Olivia Voldaren Gruul: Xenagos Selesnya: Karametra Orzhov: Obzedat Golgari: Varolz Simic: Primespeaker Zegana Izzet: The Locust God Boros: Aurelia, The War Leader
I also have an oona deck, it's kind of a mill deck with some cards to take advantage of the tokens that oona makes (thieves' guild enforcer, undercity informer, altar of dementia etc). very fun. What does yours do?
@@Rouleaux i use mill on everyone including myself but also card advantage via discard. I have been taking advantage of the tribal support of rogues. Dire undercurrents and kindred discovery for card draw. Its still work in progress from ita original them of just mill. It was my first deck so i will always have it.
Neyith can draw more than one a turn. It's just if a card like Ezuri's Predation that can cause like 20 simultaneous fights will only draw you one card and combat can only draw you one card.
What do you know, I built a Trostani deck and I have to agree she was a ton of fun, though as I play tested the build and made adjustments, the whole thing started leaning more on smaller tokens and I found Rhys the Redeemed to be far better suited for the commander slot. But still thinking Trostani with Helm of the Host could be a ton of fun. Later maybe, I'm messing around with Sythis right now.

or maybe it's due to the fact that he duel wields his attacks? not sure

That is a spicy build
Best card for Volo that has yet to be made: Creatures you control and creature cards in your, hand, library and graveyard lose all creature types.
Great Video! Would love to see videos where you guys talk about your favourite commanders or cards in general of each respective guild.
Grismold with Decayed zombies is a fun concept as well!
Veyran is my new favorite Izzet commander. She's a ton of fun if you like spell slinging.
I'm really happy I found this channel. You guys are awesome, and I love the focus on balance and fun
Hofri Ghostforge is crazy good, definitely one of my favorite.
Veyran, Voice of Duality is also super fun for a storm setup. Pair it with thousand year storm, apex of power, and mana geyser/seething song and prepare for 20 min turns
I play her with cheap prowess creatures and cantrips. harmonic prodigy and adeliz fit so well in that deck. and yes, storm, storm, storm!
This video was unbelievably entertaining thank you so much.
Most enjoyable video from this month for sure, It was
My current favorite commander is Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle.
What are your wincons?
@@SeekerOfKnowledge87 I typically tutor for Basalt Monolith, then draw my library through something like Blue Sen Zenith or Staff of Domination. I then cast Chromatic Orrery to make my infinite mana colored, at which point I can draw out all my creatures through Kinnan or if I've already drawn most of my library just cast all my creatures from hand (which are all Eldrazi).
Then I cast finale of Devastation for an insane amount and All is Dust, then swing for the win.
God these are some great choices
Ive loved playing with eloise and ended up making an artifact token deck thats been really fun
Beezy has been on the Eloise grind lately as well
If you give Tahngarth menace, he becomes unlockable.
It makes every attack step into your attack step.
Would love to see this series continued for other color combinations and monocolored!
When Tangarth came out, my buddy built him and won in the most stellar first game. It was brilliant. I have no idea how he did it
Of these, I briefly had Teysa as a general.
I also have Eloise, Nephalia Slueth in my 99 for my Sefris of the Hidden Ways deck and she’s super fun even in the 99 lol.
Sad to see my boy Blim on your hitlist, but I really enjoy playing him in an Act of Treason style build, it leads to some fun politics when I steal the best creature on the board and have to decide who to give it to. That way I play fewer "bad gifts" and it's more engaging for everyone.
Even our least favorite designs can built in fun ways no doubt
I've been looking at him and playing him as a group hug deck. Actually giving people good things. Or neutral things that help the table like howling mine or something. This is a good idea.
@@Goodthrust69 I also run neutral effects that I can give away that work for the whole table! Things like Howling Mine, Mass Hysteria, and Endless Whispers are pretty great.
Depala is my favorite Boros commander. i love playing it with the dwarf/vehicle tribal budget deck
This is a fun series. Hope you make more for the mono and 3 color sets!
"Why is he bonding with Basalt Monolith?" Had me laughing out loud
For Dimir, tribal rogue with krydle from AFR is super fun.
I do indeed, I really want that Grixis play my opponents cards commander
@@NitpickingNerds marsil the pretender isn’t bad for that
@@NitpickingNerds I use Jeleva as my commander for "play my opponents cards" with Prosper, Etali & Wrexial in the 99.
Momir vig is my personal favorite simic commander. A tutor on a body for playing simic creatures is awesome. I average winning by turn 7 or earlier.
He is pretty cool for toolbox commander, isn't that oppressive too.
i really enjoy munda in the 99 of my 5 color allies, pairs really well with realmwalker
Interesting to hear your insights on some commanders, even learned about new cards too (I first started around Darksteel and didn't play again until War of the Sparks)
* Ranar: Hmm maybe I underestimated him, the precon didn't seem great to me
* Eloise: She seems super interesting, seems potent
* Prosper: Crazy strong
* Neyith: Interesting, never heard of this one - fighting seems pretty sweet, the bottom portion reminded me of Xenagos
* Trostani: She's okay, Nykthos Paragon is very scary with her
* Killian: Looks super interesting, good amount of ways to go, Liesa is my Orzhov fav though, what is commander tax lol
* Grismold: Very interesting, I feel like Golgari has a lot of interesting commanders that I want to try out
* Volo: Super nasty, very fun deck construction, and a lot of cards people have never heard of
* Brudiclad: I love tokens, I love the way it works
* Ozgir: Value town in Boros, who would have known lol - I think it also helped that the precon had some very sweet value
* Bonus - Niv-Mizzet: I remember building him when I wasn't satisfied with playing spellslingers with the C19 Jeskai precon - took wins with Thousand Year Storm to resolve something like a Comet Storm or Earthquake copied multiple times. I feel like the Vadrik from Midnight Hunt to be a great Izzet spell deck to play
If you're looking for weird Dimir commanders, I recommend Dralnu. And if you want to be extra spicy, try donating him to opponents so you can deal a bunch of damage to him.
That card is very weird
Tahngarth is actually one of my favourites. Menace makes him literally unblockable, and there's an abundance of ways to grant it.
My favourite Dimir commander is Vela, the Night Clad. Play her with a bunch of Devoid Eldrazi and your team can only be blocked by artifacts. Chuck some Reconnaissance Mission effects in there. Juicy!
That is a spicy deck
A lot of these bad ones looks like super fun and pretty good creatures for the 99 tho. Witch is nice that they have some redeeming features
Prosper continues to be crazy especially since they keep adding better res treasure cards and exile matters spells
Would love to see like a most fun/ least fun to play list
I have a Niv-mizzet parun deck. I just took out curiosity type card, I totally agree that those cards does leads to victory, but a little too consistently, in which to me is my favorite part of commander. taking out 2 card infinite combo make the deck a lot more fair and make you work a lot more to set up an insane combo.
Thanks for such an entertaining video guys!
Do it for mono-color too, great video!
The new unfortunate part about brudiclad, is that now we have essix who just does his job but better.
Card is ridiculous and busted."
I love Boros so much despite its flaws and Osgir was one of those Commanders I saw and immediately wanted to try, but put on the backburner cuz I have so many decks right now x.x How fun is he???
As always, love the content bois!
The thumbnail got me excited cause I build an Iroas deck and want some good cards in that color combo.
As someone who has gotten the trostani helm combo off it is a lot of fun
I know this is a year out now but what y’all think of fire mind rather than parun? He’s counter-able but has a more manageable cost, he can tap to start the infinite but that means he needs haste to start infinite out the gate so that’s 3 spells cast for about 7+ mana and all are presumably counter-able.
Kinnan is totally a cedh deck
(PS you become a target pretty fast sometimes, so bring some protection)
So the next time Wizards makes a Gruul unblockable commander, THEN you can put Tahngarth as the worst Gruul Commander.
Therefore, I challenge you to make/play a Tahngarth deck on the channel.
Even our least favorite can be built in cool ways
Agreed. I freaking love my Tangarth deck. It definitely strikes fear in the hearts of other players when they finally realize how scary he gets.
gotta love that Trostani representation :3 clearly it was influenced by my deck!
You missed incubate tokens with Bruticlad. They're the best ones because they come with counters that stack on top of whatever you turn them into.
One thing I noticed about Simic was the highs were really high (Volo, Arixmethes) and lows were really low (Kinnan, Tatyova, ect).
Yeah the land draw commanders just run away with games
Beezy you should look at Aurami! You might like her. She seems to be a little more focused on things different from normal dimir things
Decks i own, i play oona different though for more fun.
Azorius: Bruna
Dimir: Oona
Rakdos: Olivia Voldaren
Gruul: Xenagos
Selesnya: Karametra
Orzhov: Obzedat
Golgari: Varolz
Simic: Primespeaker Zegana
Izzet: The Locust God
Boros: Aurelia, The War Leader
I also have an oona deck, it's kind of a mill deck with some cards to take advantage of the tokens that oona makes (thieves' guild enforcer, undercity informer, altar of dementia etc). very fun. What does yours do?
@@Rouleaux i use mill on everyone including myself but also card advantage via discard. I have been taking advantage of the tribal support of rogues. Dire undercurrents and kindred discovery for card draw. Its still work in progress from ita original them of just mill. It was my first deck so i will always have it.
Imagine kinnan having the ability to soulbond multiple times or for different benefits. Might fit the flavour better
UW- Raff
WB- Vona
BR- Prosper
RG- omnath
GB-
BU- the scarab god
UG- arixmethes
GW- sythis
WR- Iroas
RU- Rielle
Neyith can draw more than one a turn. It's just if a card like Ezuri's Predation that can cause like 20 simultaneous fights will only draw you one card and combat can only draw you one card.
My Niv-Mizzet deck is awesome loving ping people pairing him Veryan voice of duality is great
another fun video! Thanks guys!
Loved this videos, I hope you make more, mono color next?
