Really interesting insights Dave. You could tell in the Usyk Fury fight that Usyk's fitness was just a fair bit higher than Fury's. I felt Fury was doing pretty well up until round 8 and then the pace just got to him. Usyk was right on top of him in round 9 and Fury started making elementary mistakes like sticking his head beyond his lead foot. He was fucked. There was nothing Fury could do to really slow him down either. Fury tried early on to put all his weight on Usyk in the clinches (like he did in the 2nd Wilder fight) but it just didn't work because Usyk's clinch work was really good. Usyk was using bicep control to stop Fury clinching him and putting all his weight on. Usyk also used his elbow to stop Fury controlling his waist. He reminded me of the real old timers like Jack Johnson, James J Jeffries, James Corbett and Joe Gans. Clinch work at that level has become a lost art in boxing and it's something you only really see in MMA/UFC. It's why Fury had no joy against Ngannou in that respect. The jab and the right uppercut was working really well for Fury, but he probably wasn't hitting Usyk clean enough or regularly enough to truly stop him in his tracks. If there's a rematch, I think it'll be another very competitive fight and I think Fury should still fight at distance, but just try to work on his fitness even more. It might make the difference.
