Hi Sir, I am a professional ETL tester having an exp of 10 yrs. What I am observing these days is ETL testing requirement is very low. Very few companies are having this requirement. Similar goes to ETL developer for Informatica. But there is a enormous opportunity in Data Engineering. Be it Big Data or Cloud, both are having good amount of openings. But not for Data Engineering Testing. Do you think this is the time I should end my testing career and pursue Data Engineer as a developer or Big Data Analytics career? I know this will be very difficult and almost impossible to achieve without any project level exp. Could you please share some of your inputs on this.
My opinion is there is good market for ETL qa engineer specifically mid experienced however it naturally decrease the roles as years of experience grows so I would suggest you following as you already spent good amount of time in QA. Upskills and learn additional skills like Python scripting, APi testing both manual and automation and get some exposure in web automation like selenium etc..

Sir I've a doubt. U applied minus query for emp name in target n source.... What if we are getting data from flat file as well... Some employee names are coming from flat file. U here used source as oracle table.....but I wanna use source as combination of flat file n database table... And then I want to apply minus query. How can I achieve that ?
In such cases - you can perform minus query between staging and target, generally in most of the project there is an staging table which is just the extract from multiple sources and dumped there and then further transformation takes palce
@@etlqalabs5048 So in such cases we don't need to validate the source, as staging is a replica of source so if we validate data between staging n target we can consider that we validated data between source n target right.
@@gandhamajay4063 yes that’s true practically. If you still need to validate source then you can use shell scripting or python to automate but that needs a bit of scripting knowledge

Dear Sohail, Please follow the playlists that I have created for ETL testing specific . These playlists are still evolving and I continue to add more contents . As an ETL tester , you need to know SQL, data warehousing concepts, Linux/shell scripts , Testing concepts , anyETL tool ( I am covering Informatica here ) . These are sufficient skills for you crack any interview or efficient working as an ETL Tester. Hope this clarifies your questions.
ETL QA Engineer will also check the mapping logic defined in job , that's part of white box testing because you need to understand to application of various transformation and logic in the mapping and this is something gives you an edge over functional/Manual test engineer. So yes , it's best thing yo validate mapping which has following advantage- 1) Early detection of bug wrt data model inconsistencies and business logic 2) Early resolution of defect ensure low cost for testing. 3) Recognition and visibilities in project.

Domain won't have much impact on ETL testing , you would need to peform the standard testing irrespective of any domain be it telecom, BFSI etc... Domain knowledge would add a value when you perform some functional testing when you expect to understand the specific behaviour
