Not really. I've driven a couple cars from that era, a 49 Hudson and 54 Plymouth, and they were just pure pleasure on four wheels. You quickly forget how terrifyingly bad they do in a crqsh when you're rowing through a 3-on-the-tree like that. Happily, how a car does in a crash is meaningless to me, so I am more than happy to daily one in 2023. IDGAF I lovd driving that 49 Hudson and 54 Plymouth. I'll roll the dice. Rather drive something I enjoy than let everyone else terrorize me into driving something I hate.
All it took was 80 to 100 left turns with that MONSTER Novi overpowering every single part of Russo's Kurtis Kraft and it was inevitable that something crucial was bound to break (in this case...explode.) Fun Fact: This was AJ Foyt's first time at the speedway and while he was sitting in that first turn seat and watched Russo's dramatic exit to the 500. He was having VERY serious DOUBTS as to whether he was cutout for this race at these speeds. (AJ's own public admission.) I guess he was able to overcome those fears. 35 times in a row!
My dad’s era as a race driver- love this, thanks for posting.
It took a lot of nerve to drive back then. Many of these drivers never experienced old age. Great video.

a good majority of them were veterans of asian or European war theaters and in need of their next thrill
Awesome beautiful cars thank you
Pat Flaherty... The last driver to win the Indy 500 wearing a t-shirt!
That wheel blowout was terrifying AF 😳
18:48 to quote Tom Wolfe "Mother Dog!" The Last American Hero. Yes!
This gave me a spark
3:37 Jeez, that farmers' tan
I've never seen a tire AND wheel assembly explode like Russo's did.

Flaherty won $93k in1956 Indy 500. About $872k in 2019 dollars. For comparison-$2.5m to Power in 2018.
Considering that Indy 500 used to be part of F1 calendar this year, he is technically an F1 winner.
I Have Seen And Indy Ferrari
