He crossed over into popular music as no tenor before or after. A new, beautiful book, "A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS," is a lovely homage from a fan to his fans. It is emotional, passionate and represents the best of a singer we will never forget.

By far my favorite Lanza film. Joan Fontaine is marvelous in it. I saw this film only once on TMC some 25 years ago and never forgot it. Especially how the character portrayed by Lanza let himself be destroyed by the manipulative narcissist played by Fontaine. A lesson to all of us. And all those gorgeous arias! And Vincent Price as bonus!
Mario Lanza was amazing. He sang with a passion that was incomparable. This performance is an example. He sang as if it was his last time. A wonderful book expresses so much about what Lanza was about: A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS. It captures his wonderful spirit and love for his art. The book should be read while listening to voice of the marvelous Mario Lanza.
This movie was so great in my opinion. Mario Lanza sings two songs-My Destiny and Serenade-both beautifully sung as well as so many arias-I can't understand why it wasn't given the rave reviews he had hoped for. Sarita Montiel was so great in this film-the perfect lady for Mario. I thought it was one of Mario's best films and his acting was superb.
+Norma Hobson I believe that the reason why Mario Lanza's movies went into obscurity is because Mario Lanza and Warner Brothers had a real bad falling out. I bought this movie on DVD and read the copyright. Warner Brothers has forbidden Serenade to be sold or rented outside of the United States which I think is terrible. I contacted Netflix and requested that they have this movie available on there so that people can see this wonderful picture. I am hoping that this movie will get the acknowledgment that it deserves.
@Qwerty123 The reason why WB had a bad falling out with Mario Lanza was because they required him to be a certain weight to play the parts he was cast to play and he gained a lot of weight causing WB to recast the lead role in the movie the Student Prince to someone else. Mario Lanza also had a deep resentment with WB because of the toll it took on his marriage. He blamed WB for that and it's possible that his weight gain was a result of Lanza's anger at WB. Mario Lanza is from my hometown of Philadelphia and my father was a huge Mario Lanza fan. Mario Lanza was such a great talent. He had a beautiful voice but in my opinion, Hollywood ruined him. He was very in love with his wife and after he rose to fame, he had affairs, made mistakes and regretted getting into the business in the first place. I think that had he simply just stuck with singing he would have lived a lot longer. His wife died not long after he did. Make no mistake about it, WB will not allow the Lanza's film to be sold outside of the U.S.

Some years before, Mario visited México and saw here a movie where Sara Montiel was the lead lady, with Pedro Infante (the role model for the singer of "Coco"). Lanza felt in love with Sara and México. When this movie was in preparation, he personally insisted to hire Sara and to make it in México.

I am a bit worried though because Warner Brothers owns the copyright. I don't want to profit off of it. I just want everyone to have a chance to see this rare and beautiful film.
