I'm working on my own set of chainmail as well. I use it for foam larping and Renn Faires. My weave is stupid tight. I'm using 14ga steel with a 1/4in ID. It's really heavy but really but looks really good because it's such a tight weave. I made it with 45 degree seams/expansion that start at the armpit the extend to the collar bone. This has effectively turned the weave sidewises to go down the arms like yours but has made for a very clean transition. Think tank top shape. I then added fairly short sleeves that also made of 45 degree expansions at the ends of the sleeves. They are currently shoulder pads shaped. This has resulted in me being able to raise my arms straight over my head without having to lift the weight of the entire shirt. This was key for mobility while wielding a foam sword and shield. If you look at some modern athletic wear you will see a similar 45degree sleeve design. I also biased the width of the front and back panels of the garment so that part across my back is wider than my chest. This has resulted in the sleeves being a few inches further around the front of the shirt. It has significantly reduced the material bunching and the armpit/shoulder area when reaching forward. If you want to gain some mobility in your arms you may need to remove a fairly large amount of rings from the armpits. @@talloncusack yeah, I've always heard it coyf, granted it's not like it's a super common word, but I had no clue that was the "incorrect" pronunciation lol
If you want more strength, there is a product called Copperweld that consists of a steel wire coated with copper. It is used for wire antennas. The steel gives it strength, and the copper is conductive. Because of the skin effect, the current stays near the surface of the wire.
I work with Cooper almost every day and I don't know how you do it. I always get the copper taste before the end of the day... Have you thought about treating it somehow? Maybe a trappers wax or something to kinda seal the copper to avoid oxidation?
I've had a dense, nonremovable 3.5" stainless maille band on my arm for about 15 years now. One thing that I've found is that being in dusty environments really makes it start shedding black residue on my arm. The rings wear against each other and when there's any sort of microscopic debris available to act as an abrasive, the wear rate dramatically increases. The best thing I've found is to simply keep it clean. Adding oils or waxes tend to make it hold dust and makes the wear rate worse. It sounds silly, but keeping it clean helps it stay clean. For regularly and actively worn articles, the wear rate will be significant enough that surface treatments or polymer coatings simply aren't going to survive. The rings on mine are worn about 25% through. They're actually keyed into each other. I can only imagine the wear is even more pronounced with a softer and more reactive metal like copper.
Epoxy is softer than stainless steel, so it should wear faster -- partly because it takes less to abrade it away, and partly because it's soft enough that debris will embed in the surface and resist being washed away. Consider what you would have to do to repair the surface after the coating becomes scuffed or stained with embedded debris. Removing a coating like epoxy from a complex surface won't be easy. As I said, for heavy use, I think uncoated is best (unless there are prevailing issues with tarnishing of reactive metals). An oil, wax, or other similar finish can at least be trivially cleaned off and reapplied. Hard coatings like epoxy, polyurethane, etc are going to be a maintenance nightmare. Things like shellac and cellulose lacquer might be a middle ground since they can be applied very thin and can be trivially redissolved when needed. In the end, it's the individual's choice to try what they want. Not everybody makes maille intending to wear it permanently. Judgement should reflect the requirements of the application. These are just my own experiences and inclinations.
Cody, you're one of my favorite people on earth We never met and probably never will, but still, you're part of my life and i've watched your channel for years and years and i always look up to your next videos Even tho this is a one-way relationship your influence is real and i just want you to know that i love you and i hope this goes on for a long long time

I have a titanium chainmaille shirt made by Bim of Chainmaille by Bim. It’s absolutely magnificent. You may want to contact him about how to get a better fit around the shoulders and armpits. There’s a picture of the shirt he made on his etsy page (with me in it!) for some helpful tips. I’d link it for you, but youtube...
Hey Cody, I'm a jeweller. One of my store signature items is copper coins with silver surrounds. The coins have people's birth years on them. We make them as pendants, we then heat the coin up to about 80°C and spray it with a clear lacquer. Being hot means it dries quickly and any moving parts can still remain movable. The lacquer helps to prevent corrosion and tarnishing of the metal. Not sure if it will work for you. But may be worth it.
Well done! I'm getting ready to do the same. When you mentioned how long you've been working on it I cringed a little. Just an FYI if you want to reduce the copper contact you can seal it with a product called SimpleCoat.
Good on you for taking on a project that takes time to complete. Are you going to articulate the elbows by adding more rings there? I'm personally repulsed by copper, and I found this out the hard way by having a ring made from it. Please keep up the hard work showing practical examples of physics properties!

You are looking well, and the Winter is almost over. Go well Cody. Chris in England

You are one weird guy, mad respect bro, mad respect. Keep it going.
You should electroplate the copper with brass if that's possible.
You should consider varnishing it when it's finnished to avoid poisoning problems on the long term
Cody would survive the zombie apocalypse in that.
OH MY GODDDD HE LOOKS SO GOOD HE CUT HIS HAIR!!!!!
I can remember the time I got a chance to wear chainmale it was insanely heavy. Was still a lot of fun.
My favorite project from Cody’s lab
If you want more strength, there is a product called Copperweld that consists of a steel wire coated with copper. It is used for wire antennas. The steel gives it strength, and the copper is conductive. Because of the skin effect, the current stays near the surface of the wire.
I work with Cooper almost every day and I don't know how you do it. I always get the copper taste before the end of the day...
Have you thought about treating it somehow? Maybe a trappers wax or something to kinda seal the copper to avoid oxidation?
This sounds like an interesting idea! I was wondering about oxidation, too.
Maybe floor wax would work well? It would also limit oxidation.
@@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC what if you use epoxy?
Ok that intro was amazing, great job !
Good to see you doing better Cody! You are one of the reasons I have been able to pass my Chemistry class in University
Cody, you are a badass. Like a real life badass. No one comes close to your skills and portfolio.
I just wanted to say it's awesome you have a project that is still useful even if it isn't "finished".
awesome content
Don't forget, he also didn't wash his shirt for weeks!
Cody, you're one of my favorite people on earth
We never met and probably never will, but still, you're part of my life and i've watched your channel for years and years and i always look up to your next videos
Even tho this is a one-way relationship your influence is real and i just want you to know that i love you and i hope this goes on for a long long time
I never knew copper was toxic to life. Stainless steel was the only one I knew about, thanks for sharing Cody
Reminds me of Diablo II. Blizzard needs to add “Cody’s Jacket” to an armor set somewhere.
Yessss
2:20 how people react when they see you in public with it?
youve turned yourself into a boat with your own copper bottom paint
He’s talking about such a bizarre thing so casually “yh so I just wear this to go down the shops” no offence Cody 😂
I really look forward for your videos and love the passion you have for your armor
I honestly don't think it needs justification. Speaks for itself.
once you get a full chainmain suit, fight a bear in it hand to hand combat
i never thought i would see the day that it will reach that far with it.
I hate to say it but , that crazy man who wares chainmail to Walmart is actually RUclips's science star
Why are you afraid of knifes, again? Knife dwelling coyotes?
Loved the outtake at the end. Great info on the practical issues of daily wear chainmail!
I've been working on a chainmaille suit of my own. It is out of 304 stainless steel, and they are a bit smaller size on the rings. Im using 6mm id 9mm od rings. I dont plan to weld them though. I find it nice to work on it while listening to audio books for my classes.
that was a cool flannel transition, i like it
It really just shows how time consuming it is to create it, and how expensive it must have been hundreds of years ago compared to leather.
When goku wears weighted clothing it’s cool but when Codey wear weighted clothing it’s strange 😂
Goku is also a fictional cartoon character, so there's that.
