HOW TO RIDE THE PERFECT CIRCLE!
OK let’s ride some circles!
It’s no secret that the vast majority of us are asymmetrical, so even when we think we’re being super straight, we’re lopsided one way or the other, or have greater strength on one side over the other.
When riding a circle most riders will favor leading one shoulder forward, which works fine on one circle, but is the complete opposite of what’s needed on the opposite bend.
Here’s some tips to counteract our natural asymmetry and to ride a great circle!
Instead of collapsing the waist and dropping the inside shoulder, rotate the shoulders in tandem as if they are a camera on a tripod.
Instead of pulling your inside rein while on the circle, allow the rotation of the shoulders to naturally give the turning aid with the rein.
Don’t make a concerted effort to weight your inside seat bone on the circle, allow the rotation of the shoulders place the weight on that seat bone because of the way you’re turning.
Inside leg stays on the girth as with the natural fall of the leg.
Outside leg comes very slightly back to guide the horse round the circle.
Turning the shoulders will be limited by the tightness you feel in your body but once you know what side is your tight side, you can work on it.
You only need to turn your shoulders as much as you want your horse’s shoulders to move. Think of yourself like a steering wheel!
The muscles to turn the shoulders correctly to one side are the transverse abdominis and the opposite oblique from the direction of your turn.
Watch the video where Stephanie goes into much more detail and I ride Mercurio the wrong way, and the right way following Stephanie’s advice!
Thanks so much for watching, and happy riding.

This was so helpful! I’ve been riding “squircles” I have more difficulty turning to the left. Now I am going to pay attention to that in my “ground work” instead of worrying so much about fixing that in my horse’s ground work. It’s going to make a big difference when I am in the saddle. I haven’t been correct in my reins either . I can hardly wait to try this out. Thanks so much 🐴
HI Amelia! Love this video! Thank you! We are just the opposite from you. My horse, Ducati and I are both stiff going to the right, and remembering to get my right shoulder back has been a challenge but oh my, what a difference it makes when I do so. He says “thank you for helping me” by staying out on the circle, staying balanced, relaxed, and not falling in. I love the improvement and feel of our rides when I remember this important piece of the puzzle. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued help and inspiration with all your instructional videos!!!🥰👏🐴👍🏻💕
Thank you for the video. It's very rare when the problem of the rider is highlighted. I have an S-shape scoliosis and would be very appreciated if you'll demonstrate how to overwhelm an "overbanding" in such cases.
Thank you!
Definitely much more trouble going left, more so at the canter than other gaits. Not only my shoulders but my hips want to maintain that right going position. Thanks to you and Stephanie for the advice on how to start to correct this!
I've noticed that going to the right my horse falls in. Recently I discovered while sitting in my chair that I collapse my shoulder and ribs to the left...which makes my horse fall in! Body awareness is definitely helpful. I will try turning my shoulders today when I ride to see if that helps me to turn to the right and actually bend right!
Awesome!! Thank you!! I always put the outside hand forward so I can have bend automatically with inside hand using inside leg. I understand that this coming anyway turning ur upper body!! Awesome!! In this way I can have a better and even contact also if I am not wrong! Thank you!!! 💫😊🙏
Yay!!
I'm off to a show tomorrow (horse trial TR Level) and I am going to ride the perfect circle or half circle! Thanks Amelia!
Thank you so much for doing this video just for me! Your comments from the video I sent you were so enlightening! Thank you so much for all the information you share with us.
Super video: content was relevant, complete. Visuals beautifully presented. Kudos and thanks!

Excellent detailed instruction! Thank you!
This is really helpful Amelia. I am stiff on the right , neck, shoulder and hip, so is Mirage. Our circles to the left are a true challenge. I still do Stephanie’s exercises from the rider position master class. I loose a lot of thrust on the circles as well.
More transitions! more circles. A dat at a time🐴👍
This was such an AMAZING video!!! Love the dressage basics videos!!! Also to answer your question I have a much harder time going to the left!! ☺️
Great video on how to practice turning with your body. I practiced yesterday on Glory. Thank you 😊
Absolutely great!!! My problem is more to the left! Thanks a milllion Amelia!
Great video and information. Thank you!
Nice video. This is a good explanation from Physio. Thanks.
Whoa! An easy trick that improves sooo much! Thank you!!!
Love! Super helpful! Thank you!
Clearly explained! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you forv the video and instruction. I don't really have trouble one direction or the other but I think the control with my shoulders will help alot.
Excellent!
Love your videos as I'm finding them so very informative and as a teaching aid, fantastic :) I find turning to my right is the hardest or stiffest side.
Yay! I just did a webinar on rider position. Check it out: www.amelianewcombdressage.com/free-rider-position-webinar
I also have scoliosis that has resulted in my right shoulder being about 2" lower than my left one, but also my right hip is a bit higher than my left one. I struggle with getting my horse to bend and stay round going to the right. I will try this method to see if it helps us. I have actually had to add a shoulder pad inside my jacket on the right side because instructors always 'see' that my right shoulder is lower and say I'm bicycling the turn. With the pad in place, they don't say that anymore. However, obviously the horse is feeling something different when we go right.
Helpful! Thank you

Awesome. I love these great ideas
So glad!
Very good.
I've learnt something 😏 super lesson thank you
thank you this make so much sense now to put into practice
Wonderful!
Thank you this is really helpful xx
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video! Good reminder just before my show 😊.
My issue I’ve been working on with my circles is when circling right, I tend to over turn and motorcycle the turn. I have gotten better, but I still tend to do this. My trainer has me look at my horse’s outside ear and that has helped. Now I have to focus on keeping my reins on both sides of the horse and her chest following the circle - turning with my seat…
Haha - I seem to have a dominant right side so I motorbike to the left 🤦♀️
I am much better if I remember to keep my right hand down (as it comes up) x
So glad you found it helpful Ginger! And thanks for watching and subscribing!
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
I have a tendency to have my left shoulder forward no matter if I'm going straight or on a circle, which really is hard to get it back at times, and then it is affecting my lead change work to the right. This is a excellent video!! Thanks Amelia!
You're welcome Bernice and thanks for watching! We're almost ALL crooked like that! Myself included, you're not alone! Glad this helped!

Hi Amelia, Your videos are fabulous. Thank you.
Could you please do another video on how to ride circles but talk us through each time you are correcting the horse and how? For example, making the circle larger and smaller, or improving bend and keeping impulsion even. I find it especially confusing at the canter because of the outer leg placement. When you ride, your cues are so subtle that I can't see what you are doing to correct your horse. Thanks again.
That is a great idea! I will see what I can do!
I always have trouble turning left. This was helpful.
Well done. Love the lines on the jacket. I am the opposite…left handed. Left is easier for me.
Thanks Susan! And thanks for watching and subscribing! Isn't it so crazy that we're so asymmetrical?

Left is harder for me too! Thanks for explaining how turning my shoulders helps my seat and leg position for the circle happen naturally.
Glad it was helpful!
Either I look like a banana or my circles look like bananas so I appreciate this helpful video!
Your demo shirts are great. Are these from a company, or rider created (and if so, what type of tape works best)?
Jennifer if you would like to purchase a jacket they are for sale on Amelia's website.
Masking tape also works well 🥰
Oh yes, as you already know, I have ALOT of trouble turning my shoulders to the right!😉
I love your jacket, the vertical and horizontal stripes help to show your correct form, and would aid an instructor in seeing asymmetry. Where can I get one, who makes it?
I have them on my store! Here's the link: www.wbembinc.com/ada
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Brilliant! I suggested stripes to the Kerrits company, after seeing Tiger Woods golf shirts, Kerrits never replied. I thought it would be useful in our world too. I added a stripe to a Romfh shirt and wore it in a clinic, the clinician loved it, commented on how useful it was for him. I love it, will definitely purchase.
I am left handed and more supple but my right side is stronger but all my horse injuries are my right side.
Definitely left!
Tougher time turning my shoulders to the right. Most likely from too many injuries / broken bones sustained on the right side of my body.
Thank you!! Very helpful! I tried to watch the confidence mini workshop, but couldn’t get it to populate… I will try again later. That is problem numero uno with us. I have a question on another subject… I notice you use polo wraps on your horses, I have heard that it isn’t as good as previously thought to use wraps or boots.. that it makes the muscles weaker somehow. Obviously, you don’t think so because you still use them, I would just like to know if you’ve heard that theory and what you think of it. I love my polo wraps because they look so fancy, but don’t want to use them if they don’t help him.
Thanks for this question Cathy! I'm going to put it in with the ones for the Q&A as its a great question! Thanks for watching and for signing up to the course!

Can you address placement of the riders head? In the video, while talking with the trainer, when you turned your shoulders you turned your head even more. (Helpful having that jacket on!). But in the ridden part it appears your chin is more to the center of your chest but could be hard to during most of the circle. Does it make a difference or should we try to keep our chin/eyes aligned with the rotation of our shoulders? Thanks!
Jayne this is a great question, for dressage riders keeping your head in the center of your shoulders so to speak this keeps you more balanced through the turn.
Jumper riders need to turn their head further when they are planning a turn.
-Stephanie
Harder to the left also, taking my belly button left helps but its very stiff for me.
What about the both reins? Inside rein is a bit higher
To the left for me. I was thrown and trampled by a horse and broke my left ribs and a flail chest on the left. So it’s all tight and bound up with scar tissue on that side now.
Is trakehner horse good for upper level of dressage?
Any horse can do dressage, but warmblood generally have an easier time than others for upper level dressage because they're bred to be sport horses.
My goodness how is this free😍
haha I get asked that more than you think. I just love dressage and want to share it! If you'd like to support the free content, consider joining my patreon- but subscribing and liking my videos is also great. www.patreon.com/amelianewcombdressage
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage I'll check it out! I actually live in Africa, where we do not really have a lot of top riders or good dressage coaches, so I am learning so much from your content! I always thought dressage was boring but now that I know how many things I'm doing wrong I'm loving every ride😂
I would have a question about riders pelvis. I always thought that rotation starts with pelvis, so the riders shoulders and pelvis stays in the same direction even on circle. Am I wrong ? Thank you

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage thank you
Yes I have more trouble turning to the left. When my trainer tells me to move my left shoulder back it feels awkward because I think I am even😜
Working on our position makes a huge difference! You are definitely not alone in feeling crooked sometimes!
To the right is more difficult for me. Everything on my right, including my hip, is stiffer
I mean better contact using the upper body as per the video 💫😊🙏🙏🙏🙏
My problem is riding right hand in.
Harder to the rt. For me. Rt. Rotator cuff surgery 🐴😬
Right direction. Bad shoulder and Gabriel has an old injury.
can I give it 5 thumbs up?!?!
🤣🤣🤣
