    Love it when you get into the science-cy and the historical bits about gardening… the carbon/nitrogen ratio & the pineapple 🍍 growing fun fact! Also, so good to see your kids hanging out with you in the background passively learning…

    So interesting to see the difference between your hotbeds and the ones built by Charles Dowding in his video this weekend.

    • @MyFamilyGarden

      Are they much different?

    • @dafyddrhobert2414
      @dafyddrhobert2414 Год назад +1

      @@MyFamilyGarden Not that much different in theory but his is a lot larger. It's worth watching the RUclips video to compare. It takes many wheelbarrows full of manure to fill his greenhouse hotbed.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  Год назад +1

      I've just seen his video, it's the first time I've seen him do one indoors. His greenhouse is a lot bigger which gives him more space to play with.
      I find the heat will last from this for at least 6 weeks, and if I keep topping it up I can extend that for even longer

    If you run some pvc pipes through your hotbed and into your house, you can get free warm air in winter to reduce to heating bills too. A wee solar powered fan to push the air around will run your system for free.

    Have you tried placing some large stones throughout the depth of the hotbed? I imagine they could help retain some of the heat the pile is generating, and then distribute it during the cool nights.

    Great hot composter, soon heat up your pile, would it be a good idea to stand on the compost to compress it that way u would get more in to the pile at the start?

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure to be honest, the only thing i can think of is it would get rid of too much air from the pile

    💩Just the other day I was watching Charles Dowding do his hotbed! Do you get a regular supply of manure from the donkey sanctuary? To fill it up as it sinks, I mean. I’ve recently started walking my plants out to the Greenhouse every day as and when it warms up enough, and then back indoors again when it cools down too much. It’s a right palaver! But it’s what we do!

    • @MyFamilyGarden

      I'm going to bring out a couple of tomatoes today just to see how they get on.
      We can get manure regularly I just need the time to go get it.
      I'll start doing some plant walking nest month lol

      tufty yep that is what the wife and I are doing with the tomatoes and cucumbers every morning,a few hours out there with the cooler air then back inside ,a real palaver,but spring is here,let's hope for a warm summer but not too dry

    I’ve just built a green house say 6 by 10 foot ! I stumbled across the video for ginger , but gone onto hotbed for winter planning! I guess you re use the manure after winter on the outside plants or have you ever kept it going through out the summer ?

    Great video about your hot bed Monty, what will you plant into it once it's broken down a little bit? I had a delivery of horse manure that's in one of my compost heaps and I was debating whether to grow squashes or courgettes in it in the summer but I was not sure whether the manure would burn the roots or not? Lovely job on your hot bin 😊
