  • Following up a lead from Travis Treks I find the cave my Dad told me about years ago. Also more hints on how to get to the plane crash site.

Great video. I'm taking my scouts to the plane. While looking for info on that I found this video. We are going in two days and expecting rain in the afternoon. My goal is to shelter in the cave. Just to be clear. You took the hanging rock trial, then just before the summit headed north east. You left the hanging rock trial near the peak and followed the ridgline. The cave is on the West side of the ridgline. I understand you may not get back to me in time for my trip, but I thought I would try.

My first time to hanging rock we didn't take the main trail and ran into some guy who was "exploring caves". He told us how to get to one you can go into and crawl out the top of. It was great. I have no clue how to get back there.

Was it near a waterfall? Every time I go off trail there, I find something new.

I saw two adult black bear on the Cooks Wall trail about a month ago, between Wolf Rock and Magnolia Springs trails.. I saw a huge pile of scat hiking in to the crash site the day before this video, so I knew they were around. Was amazing seeing them in the wild.

I have seen black bear in Stone Mountain State Park but never in Hanging Rock. Hiking to the crash site makes some noise, since you are off trail, so the bear might have been around but disappeared before you could see them. It is amazing what you can see when you walk quietly thru the woods. Thank you for sharing this cool story.

Thanks for sharing, Charles! I know where I’m headed next time. :) Hate to see graffiti in places like that, especially.

Hike up the Hanging Rock trail. Once you get to the top of the ridge, follow the side trail that goes roughly East North East. Be looking down the South Eastern slope until you see the large rock. Carefully hike down to the large rock and follow the rock face about 60 or 70 yards. The cave will be in that rock face. Good luck finding the cave.

The plane crash is NorthEast over the ridge from the cave. The exact location is on Google Maps. I haven't been up there, since it was listed on Google Maps, to verify that the location is accurate, but it does look like it. I am so glad you found the cave, it was actually a commenter on another video of mine that gave me tips on where to find it.

If you were on the ridge, you were within 200 yards of the cave. The cave is on the South side of the ridge. I just went to Google Maps to double check and noticed something that was not there before ... The plane crash location is shown as a historical landmark!

With the homeless population on the rise in Stokes county I'm surprised that cave hasn't been claimed & occupied as home for some.

Some caves I have been in would be cool to live in, this cave is not one. There wasn't even a spot to sit comfortably. I couldn't imagine trying to sleep in there.
