Just to clarify the “Hibachi theme”, it’s not because Arenas loves to eat there. It is his nickname because he’s cooking players in front of everybody…just like at Hibachi. A lil extra info: one of his teammates actually said that on the bench about an opposing playing who was cooking their team at the time. Gilbert loved it and ran with it.
Gil is ,not even low key, the most black air force 1 energy guy who was in the NBA. Dude be hustling orgs with fat contracts and pulling gats in the locker room and shit.
As Gilbert Arenas claims himself these started the low top basketball shoes era… true or not they were indeed one of the first low cuts out there, even though the impact is probably less than the Kobe 4
Gilbert Arenas was a character. His home in Orlando had a full on shark tank. He also bought a crap ton of fireworks every year and put on a huge show for all the kids in his neighborhood.
I had the team USA colorway, very stable shoe specially on the mid to forefoot. Slight heel slip and cushioning is very firm, that’s why I wore them mostly casually. Came out in tons of colorway, Arenas at that time was very popular because he was one of the few player that can score on anyone. Even went toe to toe with a Kobe. Funny person also.
I had these when they came out in 2006. THEY ROCK!! I'm a post player (PF) & they were perfect with support. That outrigger was the TRUTH!! They are my all-time 2nd favorite hoops shoe.(Jordan 9). They really solidified Adidas as my choice BB shoe. FYI, I'm 50 so I've hooped in PLENTY of kicks.
Man I think you’re going to get a kick out of these because I’ve been wearing them for the last week nervously after watching this video and I can tell you that these absolutely hold their own and go toe to toe with anything else on the court.
Thansk for the great insights. Just bagged them and wore them 3x this past week. BEST KICKS IVE EVER WORN. After your review I was nervous cause I didn’t think they would be high performance. A few notes, when I first put them on they felt really comfortable in multiple but after I ran I started to feel the low top collar digging into my ankle. However after the second and third time that seem to resolve itself and it molds a lot better to my ankle. i’m a high motor slash and dash guard so I put a lot of stress on lateral movements and I can tell you that I’ve never felt so comfortable and quick on my feet and a pair of shoes. I’m seriously gonna buy a second and third pair just so I can have some in my stock. I usually burn through two pairs a year and I want to keep these on my feet for a while.
my dad gave me the home wizards pair for my bday back in 2006 and that was the first time i enjoyed playing in a low top. i wore that until the outsole fell off after 4 years. i also had the tmac 6 black lows with the same formotion outsole tech. i loved them both until they broke in 2010 to 2011. glad they brought this one back. will wait for the home cw to bring memories back. lol
Cool video, yeah, these were rumored to release months ago, and nothing happened. I had the USA and UNDRCRWN colorways back in 2006, they were a nice shoe to walk around in, and they were decent to play in. I loved the midfoot stability on the original, I hope that the new one has that. Thanks for another entertaining video and for letting people know where these can be found.
I continue to pleasantly surprised at how many cool shoe models that Adidas had. They definitely seem underrated to me. Thanks for reviewing other shoes other than Jordan and Nike! Keep it coming.
Hi Chris, I owned these back in 06 these were indeed the first low top signature shoe ever released. Also I remember the marketing, the three stripes were out there because Gilbert ran on the lateral side of his feet apparently.
Nice, one of my weird favorite shoes. Always thought its aesthetics were waaaay underrated. Even though kicksology (I know, I'm old) gave it a low score, it's been a grail of mine since I was a broke student!
It’s Hibachi because he would heat up like one. Puma Clyde’s were the first lows. Also, Gil loved to wear the low shell toe adidas when playing. The traction from what I can remember is amazing.
Gil was the 1st to have a signature shoe that was low .. but Steve nash around tht time was another player I can remember who notoriously wore lows but wasn’t a signature .. he was Nike guy
I owned 2 colorways of the orignal Gil 0s. Damn did I play the heck out of them. Wonder if they'll still be a good performer in 2022. Hope we get some here in the PH
Gil christened his right arm the hibachi, because once he started getting hot those defenders were gettin cooked. It became his nickname, and he even had a celebration, kinda like Darius Miles and Q. Rich when the "knuckle head" move. He'd hit a shot, and turn his piping hot palms up as if he was grilling food in them. That guy was a character.
i remember these had 3 formotion pods and the t mac 6’s which were the top tier adidas sig had 6 formotion pods. the idea for basketball was during lateral movements it would keep you in contact with the ground
Tmac 6 Formotion worked well for me. Great ball shoes back in the day. Hope they restomod those next, and also the Adidas Chauncey Billups. Love that shoe
does puma clyde count as a signature shoe? If so, that is a low top. Other low top shoes that I don't think were mentioned yet in the comments: 1. Luka 1 2. Zo 1 (BBB) 3. Melo 1 (BBB)
I got the 61pts color way and they super comfortable! I don’t ball wit them I use them to just chill. I copped this color way recently. Very comfortable and I’m a big guy
I remember the Adidas "It takes 5" campaign with the GilZero, Billups, Tmac, Duncan and Garnet shoes. Thought they were really dope. I think I was hooping in the Adidas Game Day Lightning around the time that these were released 🤣
Fallen in love with this shown the past couple months. I’d jump on a grenade for this show it’s the best. Sorry if this has already been brought up but love to get new balance coverage like brand new 9060 silhouette from JFG.
I still have my original white/navy pair of these in mid top form. I don't remember how they played because I was a dumb highschooler who would hoop in anything.. but Gil was The Man for like 2 seasons.
I got these from Burlington tonight for 34.99 but the orange blue and black color I needed a cross trainer with a hard bottom for the gym I think these will work perfect for weight training and CrossFit style training
Still have my OG pair of the Wht/Blu/Red CW, loved these. One of my all time fave Adidas shoes 4 ballin! I also have the mids in mint condition but they weren't called the Gills. I have the Bulls cw which Nocioni wore during his Bulls era.
Full disclosure...I don't do Adidas really at all! But I've always thought this was a pretty awesome-looking shoe. Thanks for the review! I think I'm gonna grab a pair!
Hey Chris/Nightwing, I worked for almost a decade at adidas, and know all their technologies really well. If you want to know more about Formotion, ping me.
I was going to mention Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Adidas but I think when Adidas gave him his signature it was a high top even though at the time he mainly played in Low's
Generaly speaking, in the 70s, half of the players were wearing high top and the others low top. In the 80s, high top and ultra high top (think about the moon boots of Magic in 88) except for a very few players in low top (Pippen, Drexler and Chambers). In the 90s and mid 90s, most of the shoes like the Barkley, Air Flight and Penny line were mid Top
Arenas wore lows even as early as his Arizona days (not sure about high school). He would even wear Nike running shoes before he signed with Adidas, like Thabo Sefolosha (came after Arenas).
Yeah this model started the multiple colorway. Too bad he got injured that year so the pairs couldn’t take off marketing and sales wise.. I think he had the 1st low top signature.
I had this conversation with u a long time ago about who had lows on the court first and we had a back and fourth about him wearing at the time when Kobe’s was blowing up like crazy 😜 love your videos hi miss wing
I owned a pair of the originals and they pretty good but a side note I was surprised to hear that they would be bringing his signature back. Would rather wear his over Harden's any day.
Kinda interesting pair - the colors on this colorway don't work for me, particularly, but I might go for another colorway if something appealing releases
Just to clarify the “Hibachi theme”, it’s not because Arenas loves to eat there. It is his nickname because he’s cooking players in front of everybody…just like at Hibachi. Gil is ,not even low key, the most black air force 1 energy guy who was in the NBA. Dude be hustling orgs with fat contracts and pulling gats in the locker room and shit.
it was Brendan Haywood that coined the term... read that somewhere
That is true but the originals were a collab with Benihana so he did like eating hibachi lol but you're right about the nickname stuff.
Facts...
Love the facts being shared here. True fans of the game.
Adidas needs to restomod the EQT Top Ten 2010. The “feet you wear” tech was awesome
As Gilbert Arenas claims himself these started the low top basketball shoes era… true or not they were indeed one of the first low cuts out there, even though the impact is probably less than the Kobe 4
It was nash and arenas who started doing it regularly in the mid 2000s, but it didnt become cool and trendy until Kobe did it.
He was the low top Genesis. Facts
Gilbert Arenas was a character. His home in Orlando had a full on shark tank. He also bought a crap ton of fireworks every year and put on a huge show for all the kids in his neighborhood.

Came out in tons of colorway, Arenas at that time was very popular because he was one of the few player that can score on anyone. Even went toe to toe with a Kobe. Funny person also.
Still have my Wizards Arenas jersey. Agent Zero was a truly inspirational story at the time. From Zero to Hero 🔥
As a wizards fan (I know they suck but it’s the hometown team) I love that they are giving these a retro

Yea I had the same ankle pain but looks like they resolved themselves.
As a kid playing the pg position in early 2000's these and the billups were the ones that i wanted the most
my dad gave me the home wizards pair for my bday back in 2006 and that was the first time i enjoyed playing in a low top. i wore that until the outsole fell off after 4 years. i also had the tmac 6 black lows with the same formotion outsole tech. i loved them both until they broke in 2010 to 2011. glad they brought this one back. will wait for the home cw to bring memories back. lol

Those restopods are one of the best looking adidas shoes.
Puma Clyde, Adidas Tmac, Harden, Don, Trey Young, Nike PG, Freak UA Embiid, Converse Wade
I've had the Gil Zero's and the Gil TS Lightswitch and soo glad there's a restomod coming!!!!!!
The amount of colorways that were released back in the day was insane.
Loved the mids back in the day. One of my favorite shoes to hoop in outdoors.
Man these take me back, the mids were the first basketball shoe I ever owned
It’s Hibachi because he would heat up like one. Puma Clyde’s were the first lows. Also, Gil loved to wear the low shell toe adidas when playing. The traction from what I can remember is amazing.
Low tops? Puma Clydes? Converse Chuck Taylors? I remember seeing old footages with these low tops.
Gil was the 1st to have a signature shoe that was low .. but Steve nash around tht time was another player I can remember who notoriously wore lows but wasn’t a signature .. he was Nike guy
This was one of my go to back in the 2000s, I can’t believe these are back 🔥
I owned 2 colorways of the orignal Gil 0s. Damn did I play the heck out of them. Wonder if they'll still be a good performer in 2022. Hope we get some here in the PH
They also did a series of 30+ colorways including the Gil 2 as well. It was insane.
These remind me of the tmac 6s I believe. Those were my favorite to hoop in back in the day. I would love a restomod and more of the 5s
I'm hoping for a huge release by Adidas. Bring them to Europe! As for the question, I think Delly 1 by Peak Sports was low.
I had two pairs (different colorways) as a kid and I wore them until they fell apart! One of my favorite shoes I’ve owned for sure🔥
True to size?
I honestly don’t remember but in the video he says they do.
Been waiting on these baaaad. Thank you for the great review!
Can you make a review for the Curry 1 Retro? Thanks!
Agent Zero was my fav player back in high school, I had these and the high top 1s I remember!
Remember that brotherhood era of adidas basketball? It was so lit!!!!!hope they do the other models soon
man I had these in the wizards cw back in the day. these take me back
Tmac 6 Formotion worked well for me. Great ball shoes back in the day. Hope they restomod those next, and also the Adidas Chauncey Billups. Love that shoe
does puma clyde count as a signature shoe? If so, that is a low top.
Other low top shoes that I don't think were mentioned yet in the comments:
1. Luka 1
2. Zo 1 (BBB)
3. Melo 1 (BBB)
Technically it's Walt Frazier signature shoe, they definitely don't market it that way anymore though
I been rewatching Gilbert's vids... I miss him... those were some fire shoes 🔥🔥🔥
I got the 61pts color way and they super comfortable! I don’t ball wit them I use them to just chill. I copped this color way recently. Very comfortable and I’m a big guy
I had the Wizards blue colorway back in the mid 2000s, I hope they re-release that shoe
I remember the Adidas "It takes 5" campaign with the GilZero, Billups, Tmac, Duncan and Garnet shoes. Thought they were really dope. I think I was hooping in the Adidas Game Day Lightning around the time that these were released 🤣
@WearTesters Donovan Mitchell's shoe first came out with a low in the beginning. Pretty sure they still are but noticed u skipped them
Fallen in love with this shown the past couple months. I’d jump on a grenade for this show it’s the best.
Sorry if this has already been brought up but love to get new balance coverage like brand new 9060 silhouette from JFG.
A friend had an LA Colorway of this. So dope to see them back.
This is one of the shoes I really wished had a restomod along with the And1 Rise low. 🔥
I still have my original white/navy pair of these in mid top form. I don't remember how they played because I was a dumb highschooler who would hoop in anything.. but Gil was The Man for like 2 seasons.
These look pretty good. Not an Adidas fan but these could be worth adding to the collection
Can't recommend "Basketball Strong" enough. Especially that Nightwing episode!
I had a pair of those. My pair was white, blue, and red. Love the look of those shoes.
I got these from Burlington tonight for 34.99 but the orange blue and black color I needed a cross trainer with a hard bottom for the gym I think these will work perfect for weight training and CrossFit style training
Do you know what happened to the Adidas Kobe 1 Sunshine retro release? Should've been released a while ago.
I had gil zeros in Knicks colours back in the mid 2000's they're comfy af I will be getting them
The Adidas Pistol (signature shoe) were firstly release in their low top version
I owned this color way on the ts lightswitch gil ii zero. Never thought the color way released in another model
Adidas is a lot more open to starting off their signature lines with lows. The Dame, Harden, Trae, and Donovan Mitchel's lines all debut in lows.
Don issue is a low basketball shoe right?
Thanks for the summary - was interesting to get some different info on some kicks instead of J1 materials lol
Glad you liked it!
Hey Chris/Nightwing, I worked for almost a decade at adidas, and know all their technologies really well. If you want to know more about Formotion, ping me.
The first released Adidas Kareem were a low top version of the model
I was going to mention Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Adidas but I think when Adidas gave him his signature it was a high top even though at the time he mainly played in Low's
how about Li-ning Way of Wade 1? would that count as low or mids?
Great job as always Chris. Maybe do all Jordan 1s in one video, maybe it will be a longer vid but I would watch.
I happen to notice jaylen brown wearing full length boost T-macs
Generaly speaking, in the 70s, half of the players were wearing high top and the others low top. In the 80s, high top and ultra high top (think about the moon boots of Magic in 88) except for a very few players in low top (Pippen, Drexler and Chambers). In the 90s and mid 90s, most of the shoes like the Barkley, Air Flight and Penny line were mid Top
I had these. They were white and blue. Real comfy for me
I wanted this shoe, and in this cw too. I hope those release over here. 🔥
What about Trae Young's shoes? They start as a low right?
I know I’m kinda late, but the first PGs were also lows, right?
Hibachi became his nickname for a minute when he was a Wizard. He'd hit a shot and turn his piping hot palms up and because he was out there cooking.
The Converse Run&Slam 1993 (signature shoe of Kevin Johnson) were close to be a low top
Awesome to see these back
are the formotion pods hollow like the nike shock pillars?
i loved when adidas had the contract for the nba. hope they make a return cos i'm sick of this nike monopoly... oh, and adidas' shoes are class!
i've waited so long for these
The Puma Clyde (signature shoe of Walt Frazier) were a low top model
Hey the first shoe that was a PE that was a low May sound crazy but it was the Puma Clyde all the way back to 1970
Arenas wore lows even as early as his Arizona days (not sure about high school). He would even wear Nike running shoes before he signed with Adidas, like Thabo Sefolosha (came after Arenas).
I saw the video but what is the release date ?
Yeah this model started the multiple colorway. Too bad he got injured that year so the pairs couldn’t take off marketing and sales wise.. I think he had the 1st low top signature.
Do the coming Luka 1 and previous Freak 1 count as lows?
Weren’t Mitchell’s and Trey Young’s 1st signature shoes lows also adidas, I also think maybe the cp3 line
CP3 actually started as Mids.
The Puma RS Dreamer debuted as a low
I had the triple white of these and I loved playing in them, just did not like the medial side of the shoe.
Does Antoine Walker's first shoe count as a sig? If so those were low tops
Jordan’s wasn’t doing PEs prior to 06 with like the banned 1s or shatter backboards? If I’m wrong that’s a crazy fact
I had this conversation with u a long time ago about who had lows on the court first and we had a back and fourth about him wearing at the time when Kobe’s was blowing up like crazy 😜 love your videos hi miss wing
Definitely gotta pick these up, I would go watch Gil at the MCI center(Capital One Arena) he would cook people up! Hibachi
The PG1 was also a low top
Do they have boost insole??
I owned a pair of the originals and they pretty good but a side note I was surprised to hear that they would be bringing his signature back. Would rather wear his over Harden's any day.
Kinda interesting pair - the colors on this colorway don't work for me, particularly, but I might go for another colorway if something appealing releases
That jab that not the first time adidas put out cushion that sucks had me dead lol great vid really excited to get these huge Gilbert fan!
I was gonna say,
Do the following count as first signature shoes that are low cut:
TMac1
PG1
Harden1
Maybe Puma Clyde?
Are the Tmac 1s low or mid?
shirt. where did you get that shirt. i want.
I’ve always wanted these shoes back in the day and was never able to get.
Were tmacs low tops?
