I do this a bit differently. I stick my stained glass to contact paper after design is done I put a second piece of contact paper sticking to the front.. I then flip the whole thing over and peel off the first layer of contact paper. The reverse side is now up. I then place it in mold wrong side up. I make my cement/sand mixture thin like pancake batter. I reinforce wit chicken wire and let set up. No need to grout as the mixture acts as cement.

Great teacher! When you seal the stepping stone do you seal the complete stone? Or you don’t the face where you will add The thinset w the decorations. I wonder if the thinset will stick on the face that was sealed. Thanks for all your teaching and help. It is highly appreciated.
Thanks very much Elizabeth. I generally seal the face and sides, some people don't seal at all they just wet the paver down a bit and then adhere the tess with thinset. This stops the moisture from being taken out of the thinset. If you do seal, use a penetrating sealer not one that just sits on top. I really think it comes down to the environment its going into, I have done it both ways and both have worked well for me over the years. Even the mosaic professionals offer different opinions on this so I will leave it up to you what you would like to do. Make sure you choose a thinset that's rated for the materials you will be using and also for the environment its going into. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

On other projects l use Laticrete Hydroban which is a waterproofing membrane, very easy to use as well. I use this one for submerged applications like birdbaths. Hydroban is not a clear membrane it’s an olive green colour, awesome product. There are many different products out there, have a read of the technical data sheets on the manufactures website They are very easy to read. 😊
Peter, Ive watched how you made the concrete for the stepping stone. I noticed you put 2 sorts of dry mix into the bucket before the water? One being cement what was the other?
My pleasure. Yes I seal anything that is porous such as terracotta or concrete even a paver thats been bought from a store . Some people dont but i do especially if you are in a freeze thaw area. :)
The word gems could me a few different things and it would depend on the project and where it is and what you are adhering to as to how well Mac glue would work.

There are many variables that create small holes also known as concrete voids, the most common issue is air trapped in the concrete due to excess water in the mix. Tap the sides more and give the mold a vibrating action so the air bubbles release you may also need to come back a few minutes later and do it again. Mixing the concrete more thoroughly and for a longer time can also help, using aggregate that is more uniform can have a bearing on this as well although thats a little more difficult to control.
That one is more suitable for vertical surfaces, I would be looking at Laticrete Hydroban available from Oz Mosaics or any other suitable concrete sealant. If your paver is smooth you may need to roughen up the surface, I generally do an acid wash a couple of times wearing chemical gloves and a P2 or N95 mask outside, the same goes for store bought ones as well. :)

Thanks!!! Good tutorial! Just been making some stepping stones myself. I use a spray can of veg oil to coat the mold.

Do i search concrete sealer at hardware store (bunnings)? Can you offer some profuct suggestions? Crommelin water based sealer is one I have seen
