Matt Wagner is by far my all time favorite comics person. I've had the pleasure of meeting him many times at San Diego Comic Cons in the 90's and he never failed to be an insanely nice and cool human being. HE gets me into comic stores, if there's a new Grendel or Mage comic, I'm buying it. Also Grendel fans are really the best! VIVAT
Growing up this series was almost mythic. Could never get our hands on it but we all knew beats of the story from magazines, stories told around the comic shop and snippets from friends older brothers or my cousin. Just recently got volume 6 of these reprint softcover omnibuses. The legends held true so far.
I've been reading Grendel stories since the original Comico days (never got the primer though!) and I've been thrilled each and every time I get to go back and revisit this world. Gotta put in a special mention of just how much the Orion Assante story has meant to me and reivisting it again after Sale's unfortunate passing just reinforces the way Wagner has always been able to work with the best and that they complement each other so well in each arc and storyline.
Grendel Prime is my hero. I love Hunter Rose, but Grendel Prime is a set of ideals encased in a metal chassis. Plus, I love his choice in weapons. I always wanted to see someone use one of them cool "glow sticks" for some adult-level carnage. He's not just lopping off arms, here. XD
Weirdly I think the best recommendation for fans of Grendel is pronably Jojo's Bizarre Adventure-- more in scope rather than theme. Sad about the Netflix cancelation! This is by far one of my favorite comic series!
You guys got to understand that the vast majority of comic readers or consumers of this genre aren't interested in the bad guy winning. Or stories about the bad guy being the protagonist. Jupiter's legacy was an incredible story that Netflix tried to bring to us, of course they were going to ruin it but also people weren't interested. And I don't know that there are enough of us fans that would have made this one worth it money-wise. I mean who wants to get invested in the characters that always self-destruct and die. That's weird for me to say because I love the comics, but as I've gotten older and seeing how much actual sadness and depression there is in the world, I don't think I need anymore.
I did ask Matt about five years ago at SDCC, if there was ever a plan to make a Grendel movie. He just chuckled and said "Maybe". I thought if there was any chance, since he was part of a Legendary Pictures panel at one time. I did not hold my breathe though. I do agree, that Netflix would have destroyed the essence of Grendel.
Andrew Dabb, who made the awful Netflix Resident Evil series, also made the Grendel show. So judging from the quality of the work, we're lucky Netflix canned it. I love Grendel but that Netflix Resident Evil series was just an abomination in terms of writing and logic.
I read the synopsis online and said, "yeah, they screwed the pooch". Turned it into a vigilante story and destroyed the thrust of the character. Hunter's not Batman. His rebellion is an existential one.
