- Watch Ryan Cavanaugh play the classic Irish tune "The Maid Behind The Bar" on a Deering Eagle II 5-string banjo. This has become one of the most ubiquitous tunes in modern Irish music sessions. Traditionally the type of banjo being used to play this tune would be a 4-string tenor banjo, and would be played with a flatpick. In this video, Ryan is using a 5-string banjo and is using the 3-finger style with a thumbpick and two fingerpicks. Ryan is a master of single string technique on the 5-string banjo and displays how Irish tunes can be played on the 5-string banjo using this technique.

This guys technique and tone are PRIME TIME, WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT, THANKS!!
Amazing. A genre and a technique I've never heard on the 5-string banjo. Fantatsic.
How anyone can find fault with this amazing rendition is beyond me. Talk about tone, technique, and tastefulness! Ryan does it again!
Was Ryan tuned to standard five string or to tenor tuning ?
Standard (open G)
Correct. Open G 5 string tuning, which made this all the more impressive.
If I could use the word "f&%@#ng" I would say you're a f&%@#ng legend. But I cannot so I will not ;)
Hahaha... appreciate the sentiment. I think we cracked your code. 😁
