    The question should be: For how long will the object remain in motion?" not "what causes it to stop?" For how long? That depends on the amount of force that was used. What caused it to stop? Because the force that caused it to move was limited. No one in history has ever seen or felt or sense "gravity". Therefore it remains as only an idea of how it may be if such theorie would be true. As far as acceleration goes, the heavier an object the faster it will fall to the ground. A feather will fall much slower than a human. In outer space for an unknown reason the object will continue to move longer than normal because there is no air or oxygen.

      you sound ridiculous. The fact that you called gravity a "theory" and "idea' blows my mind. Its the only explaination on why we are literally latched onto the ground, or why we don't subtly float when we jump on the earth then we do on the moon.

    Newton's first law is also the first discovery of modern physics !
    Newton is the first to use rigorous thinking and thoughts experiment but distrusting intuition.

    What happens to the energy of the ball when friction from its touching the ground acts on it to slow it down?

      Do you mean the ball's kinetic energy that decrease as the velocity decreases?
      Since energy is conserved, it gets converted to different forms; e.g., thermal (heat) energy and change in gravitational potential energy.

      Inertia is an intrinsic trait that every object possesses. Inertia is basically how strongly an objects resists being moved. The higher the inertia, the more force is required to accelerate the object to a given velocity.

    I disagree with one of your assertions. You say that gravity makes the ball slow down, but you don't clarify that this would only be true on an incline. If the surface is perfectly level, gravity has no x-component, meaning that it has no bearing on the horizontal motion of the ball.

      Even on a very long horizontal surface stretch (assuming this accounts for the curvature of a planet with Earth's atmosphere), a rolling ball would still be affected by the pull of the planet's center of gravity and therefore come to a stop on a 180 degree flat surface, further halted gradually by the friction between the moving sphere's smooth surface and a smooth ground. Basically, gravity is constantly pushing the ball down to the ground even when the object is at rest (object would only truly stay static and unmoving if the environment was empty space or continue to be in motion "endlessly" when pushed without gravity nor other forces as impediments).
      A bullet shot at any given straight horizontal line eventually veers diagonally towards the nearest and strongest center of gravity, for example if shot parallel to a given surface of a massive object like a planet, within the gravitational pull zone.
      Say a projectile is shot in space at a straight line where gravity poses no opposition, then the propelled object would continue (maybe even speed up due to the newest research topic and not fully understood effects of "dark matter") until the gravity of another celestial mass affects the trajectory or a greater force slows or halts any further progression.
      I like the way you are thinking empirically, though (keep going; cheering for you) ^_^

    I agree that friction stops the ball, but isn’t the force of gravity opposed by the normal force, such that if there were no friction, the ball will continue at a constant velocity due to the balance of the gravitational force and the normal force?

    All of the Inertia learning videos are not explaining what inertia really is. And the stuff about friction here is misleading. The ball slows because of air drag, uneven ground, grass etc. To really understand Newtons genius you need to get to the bottom of what an inertia force is.

    Please ans my one question why does the object in motion stay in motion even if the application of force is stopped???

      It's not really a "why" question. It's just how it is: objects in motion will remain in motion at the same speed and direction unless an unbalanced force is applied. The reason it is counter-intuitive to us is there are two things we can't escape here on Earth: gravity and friction. Both of those are unbalanced forces that work on objects in motion here on Earth. In fact, if a continuous force is applied to an object, it will accelerate. Again, counter-intuitive, but that one's easier to feel. Get a ball (like a basketball), put it on the ground and grab a meterstick to push the ball. Don't lose contact with the ball and meterstick, but begin pushing the ball. You'll soon be running to catch up with it.
