    I think you're spot on. Fixed focus and deep focus lenses have to be set at the correct distance off the image sensor and if everything is out of focus, it's not a firmware thing.
    Question: Could someone create an after market over lens to refocus the lens?

    • @WORTHITORNOT
      @WORTHITORNOT  2 года назад +5

      I guess someone "could" make an after market over the lens/lens to correct the out of focus issue, but for $329 a customer should not have to do that IMO. Really a shame as I really had high hopes for this camera, but that's why testing is SO important and then diving deeper to find out the possible issue.

    I recently myself became a fan of Dji products, after years of previous holding back. That said I'd recently bought the Mini 2 because I was just sick of all the other manufacturers just lacking something, after taking a chance out of sheer frustration I received my Mini 2 and was pleasantly surprised. Just like that I became a fan, there was no turning back with such a fabulous little camera drone. Then I purchased a used Osmo action and likewise just wow. I was really looking forward to pulling the trigger a new Osmo action 3, but I definitely will be waiting to see how Dji handle correction of this issue. Thanks so much for your input, I happen to find it quite valuable and will be heeding caution until this is corrected, if its corrected that is.

    👍👍🤙 2 thumbs up and a shaka for the explanation!! or maybe a front lens that can focus??

  • @marcopter
    @marcopter 2 года назад +3

    It is known that this focus system is performed manually in the action camera at the factory, the same thing happens on any FPV camera, where there is that ring to correct the focus, however thanks for the video that explains it to those who were not aware of it.
    I believe that the question here is more complex.
    I am not a photography expert but I believe that the problem may instead lie within the group of lenses, which are obviously fixed inside the block that is rotated.
    Even achieving perfect focus for a distant enough subject if the lens group is poorly designed will result in a wrong focus at the 30cm declared by DJI.
    This is because classic infinity focus necessarily generates this problem, and more you want to have a ultra wide FOV, and the Osmo Action 3 has it, more you will have focus problems in close subjects.
    In my OA3 for example the distant subjects are in focus, but those at 50 cm absolutely not, and DJI declares at least 30 cm.
    Having said that I do not rule out that DJI has some lens groups, which for example should be 7 in the Osmo Action, not perfectly calibrated or even just badly designed.
    Therefore even by adjusting the ring by rotating it the problem in close subjects may remain.
    How is it resolved? With another well designed lens group and obviously at the correct distance from the sensor, so a firmware update cannot fix such a major hardware problem and perhaps unfortunately also by rotating the lens group.
    In fact today many smartphones have more than one rear camera depending on the subject you want to shoot.
    This is because the lens group is different depending on the FOV and the desired distance of the subject.
    Unfortunately this action camera, like almost all the others, does not have a motorized lens system so the focus will always be a compromise.
    So I'll wait for the new firmware, and sure enough that both software won't be able to fix it, I'll send my action camera to DJI to fix the problem.
    If they declare "over 30 cm" a subject at 31cm must be perfectly in focus, as well as one at 20 meters.
    My 2 cents...
    The evidence of the focus problem: ruclips.net/video/ZJycqvSeZXo/видео.html

    That feeling when DJI Action series finally matches the image quality of AKASO cameras 😎😁😁
    What you show about the lens is pretty good and works on some action cameras. But I believe the situation with DJI Osmo Action 3 is worse - maybe it is a combination between the image sensor, the chipset and the lens. My unit has similar image quality to yours, and there hasn't been any firmware update since I received it 3 weeks ago.
    On the other hand - whatever is wrong with Osmo Action 3 is an excellent opportunity for many people to think about the kind of RUclipsrs that they follow and truest, because the credibility of some has significantly dropped...
    I actually was surprised to see no DJI Action review by Faruk (iPhonedo). Looks like now we know that there's something seriously wrong...

      But you can get a general feeling, though if the person only share here with youtubes re - decoding to AV1, well thread / judge carefully, get your hands on original RAW footage DL it, and see if it live up to your expectations.
      Anyone can hit me up and ask for some raw footage in a given situation / environment, though i can of course not compile some winter footage in the middle of summer in Denmark.
      If it is dashcams which i mainly deal in, well there are another place to find me 😉
      I am looking for a alternative to youtube, it is the only google related thing i use now, but so far i havnet found anything that catch my fancy.

      Hey Ian ! I wish I was wrong, but I don't think so, I think the lens assembly was not calibrated correctly and from your video of the Action 2 and the 3 you would think that DJI knows about a lens focus issue on the 2 and fix it for the 3, unless they got a huge shipment of these lens/sensors assemblies at a big discount and figured they needed to use them all up. Really is a pity.

      @@WORTHITORNOT Yeah, but after so so many youtubers, such as yourself, mentioning the focus issue, I've decided to return it unopened. I have the original Osmo Action, but have been waiting years for this particular update. I'd hoped to make the OA3 my new workhorse. As you mentioned, DJI cameras are built like tanks. A good thing. And their ease of use is phenomenal. Ironically, I think what sealed it for me was a video from a youtuber in Orlando today comparing OA3 to A2 footage. He seemed satisfied with the video crispness and was going to keep his OA3. Such things are a bit subjective afterall, but it was his side-by-side videos which highlighted, for me, the greatest deficit in detail that the OA3 had. Now, I can't unsee it. If I kept the camera, that would always be in the back of my mind. If DJI figures it out, I would happily buy it again, but caveat emptor.

    Don't believe that is fixable with a firmware. If there's a fix, the image quality will be degraded further. One of issue is with the larger 1/1.7" that narrows that focus range. They could have compensate it with a wider fisheye lens like the Gopros with a 6-8mm range.

Because we would see some in focus if even by accident given the tolerences on the thread lockdown. 1 or two degrees here and there are bound to happen, and yet that doesn't matter either. The same principle applies though. Good software and good sensors can do nothing more than expose how bad the problem is. They can never fix either one.

    But is the front housing cover also not adjusted/made to fit the lense adjustment perfectly? So it closes around the lens perfectly at this specifict "focal distance"?
    It seems to be of the same outer material of the housing, it doesn't looks like a soft material like a rubber or silicon like material that will compensate slightly on possibe (small) adjustments.
    So when the lens will be adjusted, there will also a difference in height and the front cover will not "seal" or "fit" annymore.
    Adjusting the lens more towards the sensor will give no problem. There will be only a slight gap (probabably that small that you even don't be able to tell, and it will be covered by the lens pretection glass. Or it's possible to just fill it up with a propper rubber or silicon seal).
    But when adjusting to the other side, they will have a problem and a chalange to face. Then it probably will mean that they need to redesign or adjust the frontcover too I guess?

      If it's only a matter of micrometers, than it 'll not be that big problem quickly no. And otherwise they would be able to mill a fraction away with a special constructed mill easily I guess.
      But I see some problems with firmware if this fixed focus will actually be the problem. Let's say that they're going to fix the fixed focus with newer batches. Then they will get some problems with firmware if they're trying to correct an out of focus camera with the same firmware releases as that of a camera with a corrected focus. So they'll have to make some choices there then.

    There do seem to be a lot of talk on the net of the Action 3 and OOF
    I can not belive the original OA had 11 mm thread,,,,, i have never heard of such a lens, the 12 mm fine thread lens / mounts are also called S mount in the CCTV game
    Refocusing such a lens, which at least in the old days with dashcams you might have to do, well near focus or far focus, you probably just need to turn the lens a few degrees to get back in focus, so before doing anything it is a very good idea to make a mark of some sorts so you at least have the set off point.
    After that it is a game of trail and error, i usually test out my living room window, adjust a little, film a little - adjust a little, film a little.
    Then i look at my recordings to see if the focus are at " notch " 1 or 2 or 3
    The problem with the action cameras is they are a even larger PITA to deal with, the dashcams tend to be easier,,,,,, though in both that daml glue used are still a SOB to deal with.
    If your focus slide and stay you can refocus, if your focus slide with camera temperature, you probably need to replace the lens entirely.

    • @thelittlecamerachannel
      @thelittlecamerachannel 2 года назад +1

      I forgot to say if the camera have a HDMI output, well then you can of course connect a big TV and then live go hunting for the focus sweet spot, just i am so used dealing with dashcams that often only had / have a AV out, and as they are low RES, well not of much use then looking for the focus sweet spot.
      Anyways, you should not have to do refocusing of a new expensive camera, so send your camera back and get a new one or a refund.
      PS; I am not getting a new action camera before i can get 1000 FPS slow motion, at 1080 p would be fine

    No firmware update will be able to update focus, so what I suspect DJI will do is release another update which will just increase sharpness. That'll lead to sensor noise and overcompression. After colour-grading it might as well have a smaller sensor.
    DJI make better products than Go Pro, but like Go Pro, they're too big to give a shit about their consumer base.
    There's also issues with the drones. The Air 2s is a shit-show when it comes to compression. If you check my videos, yea, I've had some good footage if I do say so myself but as an anal videographer, I'm a pixel chaser and notice these problems. DJI actually admitted that using ND filters will introduce sensor noise so I'm pretty miffed how a company can make such a mistake.
