@@Yippa391 Brought a 78 Dynahoe-190. Had it sense 2003. Just say have spent more on repair'sthan on cost of machine to buy. Hydraulic cylinders needing reseal. The dipper cylinder had to be boom truck lifted off unit. When I got it the stabilizer had strange issues like his Case. Anyway except for a Hose cracking, blowing Hydraulic Fluid all over. Just fished two on backhoe end that come up through the main base housing, too hydraulic control's under Levers. That was fun feeding the new ones through. My main problem that still is a issue is if I'm driving in second gear, it wants to pop out of gear. I mostly drive in first at my home, so no tranny issues in first. Is a garden turn soil over machine. My wife lifts me in front bucket to trim tree branches with my pole portable chain saw. Spread gravel over parking area for it and my 71 SeaGrave Engine that I'm restoration. Why a Dynahoe, they were strong one unit frame for backhoe( part of main frame) plus both my baby's have the great old Detroit Diesel's ( Dynahoe 353) ( Engine 8-71) They may have leaks or blow by, but that's a Detroit. The both run great. I do have a engine block heater, I bolted on the plates that already have the covers on engine block for them. That straight 40 Wt. Oil that is factory called for those TWO strokes. The engine being warm. With a full battery they just always start even when the temperature drops below 30. I will say back in the late 70 when I ran a Case 580-C my uncle had me operator for. We did side sewer work. The battery was on other side of frame under front loader controls. Nice pull out tray Anyway the starter was on other side of backhoe. Hard starting in colder weather. I think it was the distance the cables ran from battery to starter. That Case we had, Case was still building there own engine. Then they put Cummins in later models. Now is all FPT ( Fiat) have operated all Case models from CK Had a nice belly blade on a old CK clutch model. Boy that thing was a great grader. To the 580-E. That was the last one in 580 model's. Then on last job they had a 590. When they got rid of that, the company went to JD and Cat. So I have kind of gone cold on my Case backhoe understanding on new ones. The Dynahoe was built stronger than the Case. But BE got rid of all there Construction line in mid 80s with the Recessions of those years. It really hurt the constitution market. If it had not been for the 580 Case line, Case would have had big problems. That backhoe is what keeps case moving forward. Cat took over BE a few years ago so guess my Dynahoe-190 is in the CAT family know. Anyway I have talked to long, tell me about your Massy. What type of control patterns does your backhoe have. I ran a Ford 420 once. With the 4 Levers. Boy talk about total different control patterns than Case. My Dynahoe with the 4 Levers standard backhoe set up. Is just like Cases, with swing being far right lever. And having two stabilizer Levers in middle between the 5 Levers.
My dad bought a used dynahoe in the 80s. He loved it. It had a long reach with yhe boom. He sold to a guy who wouldn't quit bothering him. Big machine.

10:37, Yes, that is a manual fuel primer. Handy when replacing the fuel filter. It depends on how the engine is standing, how well it works, so if it doesn't work, turn the engine over a little and it might work.

i grew up around equipment. my dad worked for Cat as a service tech for almost 20 years, my grampa is a farmer. and i worked a bit as a diesel tech for a cement company. so seeing this old Case come back to life is really great. good little tractor, and as long as you keep seals in it, and some oil, it'll just chug along happily for many more years.
You laugh. I had acorns come from nowhere and the wild sound of angry squirrels. I had the last laugh. My neighbor cut down the huge maple that was nearby. It was on his land.
@@tripprogers4814 You know what's even stranger? Squirrels are carnivorous. They can catch small rodents and birds. They have been seen to munch on birds while alive. You can do a search for "carnivorous squirrels". There is a research paper that talks about this. "SQUIRRELS AS PREDATORS"
As a hobbyist, I have rebuilt a few large cylinders. They are not for the faint of heart! I've even made new rods to replace bent ones. This type of work, of bringing back the abandoned and forgotten is a passion of mine! I have an older Yukon XL that I'm waiting until it's forgotten before I try to bring it back to life. These 580k backhoes are great machines. Yes it is old, but parts are available and no electronics to bring it to a halt. I bought a new 580K phase 2 in 1991. About $50K then. I now have a 580k phase 1 (as do you) (parts are more readily available as it shares a number of parts with earlier models). Mine has the extendahoe, 4 in 1 bucket and 4wd. After market seal kits are reasonably priced and will be needed. Don't sell the capability of this machine short just because it is old. Compare it to a current model and you will see a lot of commonality. You have the wobble sticks. You will find these much quicker to learn and be smooth with than with the standard case controls.
I disagree about the wobble sticks being easier to learn. The “fighter”controls or joystick is way easier to pick up and use. I grew up on an old 580 N with wobble sticks. Now have a 580 super N with joysticks and also run excavators. I hate going back to wobble sticks.
@@CMMC-zb1gw Wobble sticks are a two stick control with motions similar to joysticks. One is direct action on the hydraulic valve and the other is electrically driven (typically referred to as pilot valves). The original case controls that are difficult to use have foot control of swing and a separate lever for each of the cylinders, bucket, dipper, and boom (and a fourth for extendahoe models). These are difficult to operate smoothly when one hand must push one lever and pull the other at the same time as your hand is not large enough for the distance the levers must move in opposite directions.
@@CMMC-zb1gw the letters notate the years they were produced through. Super was a higher hp rating... not necessarily a turbo. So.... In other words, a 580 N has the same backhoe controls as any other "N series" nice try.... Old 580 N🙄 SMH

Yes that's what BE called them on Dynahoe I got so use to the 3 lever that I had trouble learning smooth operation with two lever. My Dynahoe has the two lever not the 4 Levers that was Factory standard. I am use to two lever. I do still like the Levers for each function coming to you by pulling then backhoe tool goes away from you when pushing. I find it interesting that so meany huge mining drag or shovel pit machine have foot swings.

I had more fun watching this video than 95% of the other videos I've watched recently. Would love to see more content like this. I've always wanted to operate Heavy equipment since my grandpa taught me how to drive his old International tractor when I was 6 or 7 back in the 80s. Never got into it but still very interested.

As soon as you fixed the seals, I knew more would follow! Hydraulic fluid is nasty stuff, just eats anything if left long enough. A full rebuild of all cylinders will sort that out, doing one at a time is a ticking time bomb, any weak seals will let go as they are the path of least resistance.
Yep. True of any pressure system (I was in air tools) you fix one seal, the pressure finds the next weakness. You can spend a stupid long time (even relative to the size of the equipment) chasing that process failure in circles.
My father has a CASE (a few sizes larger than this one), and we wound up replacing every piston seal in the hydraulics to stop the leaks (and a fair few of the pressure lines too). The cost and time to do the seals is a hell of a lot cheaper than the hydraulic fluid tho!
I use a Case, couple sizes larger, for mining during the winter. Last fall I had a steering hydraulic hose burst right as I started it up. Fixed it and then the other one burst after just 5 minutes of idling. Fixed it and a bucket line burst. Ended up replacing 7 hoses before I turned my first bucket of dirt. No seal replacements this year. So, be conservative and replace both seals on both cylinders as long as you’re down for the one.
I really appreciate the greasing sound effect that editor Duane added. Also, resurrection videos like these are just the absolute best, watching something get fixed that was basically abandoned to die, it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 🥰

No matter what, please continue doing what you’re doing. Some other automotive RUclips channels are riding on the “I bought this and fixed that and the and then sell it because the ad revenue paid for it.” You, however genuinely want to teach and show people how a trade is useful and deserve a bigger following as other comments say. I watched my step father rejuvenate a tractor once. He and mom moved to just outside Helen, GA 30 years ago. Fritz turned that rusted out hulk he picked up at a school board auction into a showroom new looking and running piece of machinery. I've got a picture of my son sitting on it when he was just shy of 2. I enjoyed watching you bring this one back to life and hope to see a little more on it in the future.
Have owned several of case 580 backhoes, the simplicity of the machine is something to admire. Hopefully transmission holds up. Notorious for smoking torque converters.
When it comes to rebuilding things, if I have a part that's failed and needs a rebuild and there are several similar iterations of that part attached to the same thing that needs rebuilding. I would do the front loader cylinders as a set, and then see what happens. Please, keep the awesome CASE content coming!
Great job Jared. My Dad was a Case Dealer. Sold Backhoes and Uniloaders as well and after he sold the dealership he bought a 580 with the extendable backhoe and the 4 in 1 front bucket. Awesome backhoe.

As someone who grew up on a cattle farm learning how to fix equipment from my dad, and then working for several years out of high school with my dad as a heavy equipment, and tractor mechanic, I loved this video, and seeing you learn along the way, but I have to admit when you got to those grease zerks/fittings, I had a good laugh as I remember doing a many of those in my time, as I was the small guy, and could fit in places no one else in the shop could. 😅👍
Cracks me up, he's pointing out all the leaks and hoses and everything that looks deprecated an how it's unlikely to run after a decade of sitting, while my company backhoe is looking so much worse and is still used regularly XD those things are resilient as hell if you have any mechanical knowledge
Jared fixes driveway then proceeds to dig hole that will inevitably sink and cause the same problem because it's no longer compacted. Well, at least you've got something to fix it again. :D
You are a winner in my book. To not know about that wonderful Case, you took on everything my friend. I will start with the little lever you were pumping. That's the fuel pressure build up for when you change Fuel filters. To help bleed the fuel lines. Prime the fuel. On the front noticed the roll back linkage was disconnected. That is to stop the bucket from rolling back as far as it did. The over center lock for backhoe. Just hook the chain link to the rode sticking up. Then when you want to get it out of Lock. Just reach down ( this is the safety you talked about so much) watch your head, pull back on rode, and push boom lever back and forth. It should unlock. I had Leaking stabilizer cylinder on mine. The two front lift cylinder shot hydraulic fluid out like a raging river. When I bought mine. I was like you I had them done by a shop on re-seals. The engine hood. The muffler just sits down on bottom pipe, so that probably explains why stuff got into muffler, no tight seal with there hood design. I am so glad to see her work. I know that Case did a ( Safety update ) safety NEUTRAL switch, update. The backhoes could start in gear in Jump started. So Case did a fix for all there 580s. That might be the burn out of that fuse housing. I noticed that the backhoe would not start in gear. Has to be in Neutral on gear shifter, so that is working. I'm not sure if you ran a jumper cable to starter, and wath it in gear, it might START ( that might be something to look at as you go along ( Safety again) mine will start with it in gear if I jump start it. I have no neutral ( SAFETY) on mine. I think yours is close to year they switched to Cummins Engines. I'm not sure on model that switch from Case built Engine to Cummins. The New Case have ( FPT) fiat Engines. That are big Engine builders for Case backhoe now. Thank you again for bringing her back to life. Cut my teeth on a CK model. It had a belly blade mid frame for grader work. It did great grading.

Those tires hold a lot more psi that youd think they might. The front on my old work backhoe were 90psi and the rear were like 55psi. Takes absolutely forever to fill them but it makes a huge difference in the ride and traction. Definitely a cool video to watch you drive that thing or of it's grave

Great job Jared! I learned even more about tractors. My Brother and I were given an old tractor 45hp, didn't run, was tore apart and it was ours. We spent about $1000 and about a week of labor but now my brother has a tractor to move dirt, bushhog his property and a whole lot of other things tractors allow you to do! I knew an extendahoe back in '84. She was 6'3" tall.

I had more fun watching this video than 95% of the other videos I've watched recently. Would love to see more content like this. I've always wanted to operate Heavy equipment since my grandpa taught me how to drive his old International tractor when I was 6 or 7 back in the 80s. Never got into it but still very interested.

As soon as you fixed the seals, I knew more would follow! Hydraulic fluid is nasty stuff, just eats anything if left long enough. A full rebuild of all cylinders will sort that out, doing one at a time is a ticking time bomb, any weak seals will let go as they are the path of least resistance.
Yep. True of any pressure system (I was in air tools) you fix one seal, the pressure finds the next weakness. You can spend a stupid long time (even relative to the size of the equipment) chasing that process failure in circles.
My father has a CASE (a few sizes larger than this one), and we wound up replacing every piston seal in the hydraulics to stop the leaks (and a fair few of the pressure lines too).
The cost and time to do the seals is a hell of a lot cheaper than the hydraulic fluid tho!
I use a Case, couple sizes larger, for mining during the winter. Last fall I had a steering hydraulic hose burst right as I started it up. Fixed it and then the other one burst after just 5 minutes of idling. Fixed it and a bucket line burst. Ended up replacing 7 hoses before I turned my first bucket of dirt. No seal replacements this year.
So, be conservative and replace both seals on both cylinders as long as you’re down for the one.

Also, resurrection videos like these are just the absolute best, watching something get fixed that was basically abandoned to die, it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 🥰

It doesn't matter how many grease points there are that is the single most important thing you can do to make that machine last.

plus there are plenty of supercar or cheap stuff rebuilds, or other shenanigan builds on RUclips
this sets you apart with practical and more common work

I watched my step father rejuvenate a tractor once. He and mom moved to just outside Helen, GA 30 years ago. Fritz turned that rusted out hulk he picked up at a school board auction into a showroom new looking and running piece of machinery. I've got a picture of my son sitting on it when he was just shy of 2.

Have owned several of case 580 backhoes, the simplicity of the machine is something to admire. Hopefully transmission holds up. Notorious for smoking torque converters.
When it comes to rebuilding things, if I have a part that's failed and needs a rebuild and there are several similar iterations of that part attached to the same thing that needs rebuilding. I would do the front loader cylinders as a set, and then see what happens. Please, keep the awesome CASE content coming!

Great job Jared. My Dad was a Case Dealer. Sold Backhoes and Uniloaders as well and after he sold the dealership he bought a 580 with the extendable backhoe and the 4 in 1 front bucket. Awesome backhoe.

As someone who grew up on a cattle farm learning how to fix equipment from my dad, and then working for several years out of high school with my dad as a heavy equipment, and tractor mechanic, I loved this video, and seeing you learn along the way, but I have to admit when you got to those grease zerks/fittings, I had a good laugh as I remember doing a many of those in my time, as I was the small guy, and could fit in places no one else in the shop could. 😅👍

Cracks me up, he's pointing out all the leaks and hoses and everything that looks deprecated an how it's unlikely to run after a decade of sitting, while my company backhoe is looking so much worse and is still used regularly XD those things are resilient as hell if you have any mechanical knowledge

You are a winner in my book. To not know about that wonderful Case, you took on everything my friend. I will start with the little lever you were pumping. That's the fuel pressure build up for when you change Fuel filters. To help bleed the fuel lines. Prime the fuel. On the front noticed the roll back linkage was disconnected. That is to stop the bucket from rolling back as far as it did. The over center lock for backhoe. Just hook the chain link to the rode sticking up. Then when you want to get it out of Lock. Just reach down ( this is the safety you talked about so much) watch your head, pull back on rode, and push boom lever back and forth. It should unlock. I had Leaking stabilizer cylinder on mine. The two front lift cylinder shot hydraulic fluid out like a raging river. When I bought mine. I was like you I had them done by a shop on
re-seals. The engine hood. The muffler just sits down on bottom pipe, so that probably explains why stuff got into muffler, no tight seal with there hood design. I am so glad to see her work. I know that Case did a ( Safety update ) safety NEUTRAL switch, update. The backhoes could start in gear in Jump started. So Case did a fix for all there 580s. That might be the burn out of that fuse housing. I noticed that the backhoe would not start in gear. Has to be in Neutral on gear shifter, so that is working. I'm not sure if you ran a jumper cable to starter, and wath it in gear, it might START ( that might be something to look at as you go along ( Safety again) mine will start with it in gear if I jump start it. I have no neutral ( SAFETY) on mine. I think yours is close to year they switched to Cummins Engines. I'm not sure on model that switch from Case built Engine to Cummins. The New Case have ( FPT) fiat Engines. That are big Engine builders for Case backhoe now. Thank you again for bringing her back to life. Cut my teeth on a CK model. It had a belly blade mid frame for grader work. It did great grading.

Those tires hold a lot more psi that youd think they might. The front on my old work backhoe were 90psi and the rear were like 55psi. Takes absolutely forever to fill them but it makes a huge difference in the ride and traction. Definitely a cool video to watch you drive that thing or of it's grave
580 SK front tires are 48 PSI and rear are 24 PSI

Great job Jared! I learned even more about tractors. My Brother and I were given an old tractor 45hp, didn't run, was tore apart and it was ours. We spent about $1000 and about a week of labor but now my brother has a tractor to move dirt, bushhog his property and a whole lot of other things tractors allow you to do! Thanks for the video, I loved watching you fix it!
