  • Composed by me (Michael Miller), this is the "Solid Gold Theme" from a 1983 episode of "Solid Gold". The vocal is by Marilyn McCoo, who was the host of our show at that time (I was the Musical Director). Lyrics are by Dean Pitchford.

@TimBoy2012 I liked the way Marilyn McCoo would kind of appear to rise up in some segments of the show, such as in this end clip. I believe that it was from the October 22, 1983 episode, which had included a 3-way sing of the song "Sweet Dreams", with Marilyn and Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock, who comprised the lead vocalists of the very popular 1980s band Air Supply, which was mentioned in this clip as co-hosts for this episode as well. That might have helped put her in that groove at the sign-off part of the show on this clip, not to mention the energetic motions of the Solid Gold Dancers, who were a vital part throughout each episode all the way to the end dances of each episode, such as on this clip from the 1983-1984 season of the series.

@Princeess Brittany I agree with your apt description of this Marilyn McCoo version of the "Solid Gold" theme. It would be interesting to know if Marilyn ever sang this live in any of her concerts. Dionne Warwick sang one time in the 1980-1981 season of "Solid Gold" , in a specially arranged slow version that morphed into the regular version live on a 1981 episode of the show and on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in 1981 as well, with both special arrangements by the musical director of "Solid Gold", Michael Miller, whose RUclips channel we are on and went on to perform that version live in her regular concerts in the 1980s.
Marilyn did a live version of a different song entitled "Solid Gold" on a 1983 episode of the show that was featured on her RCA "Solid Gold" album released that same year of 1983 and it is on RUclips, but to avoid confusion, it is not the classic Michael Miller-Dean Pitchford theme song of the series..
To my knowledge, Dionne Warwick is the only "Solid Gold" singer-host to sing the series theme song live on camera in any format, including the regular 1985-1986 version. on its season premiere on September 7, 1985 and the special "Slowly" version in April 1981 on the "Solid Gold" show and in June 1981, on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" on NBC-TV, with both arranged by "Solid Gold" musical director, Michael Miller, of whose RUclips channel.we are on currently.

This version of the "Solid Gold" theme song turns 40 years old this year. It is hard to believe that 1983 was that long ago. "Flashdance" was released 40 years ago earlier in April 1983, while this version of the "Solid Gold" theme, Michael, has been associated with that movie soundtrack, and continues to do so. It was musical history in the making and has held up well all the way to the present era. Good job, Michael Miller and Dean Pitchford!!! The music still has magic and spins into gold. It is a drawback to an epic time in music history and not trouble-free, but certainly times that were less complex.

@@bigeyezzzzzzz You are very welcome, Michael. The spinning of the gold helps in this time in my life and deserves a musical gold medal. I recently noticed that the 1984-1985 version of your "Solid Gold" theme, performed by Deborah Ludwig Davis, had the same instrumental arrangement all the way down to the "clicking" sound heard numerous times throughout that which reminds many of the same sound in the song "Maniac" from the "Flashdance" movie soundtrack and performed by Michael Sembello.
For your 1984-1985 version, did you record a brand new version with Deborah singing live with your band, which it sound like to me? It is very similar or identical to the instrumentation in this 1983-1984 Marilyn McCoo version, something that kept that "Maniac" vibe alive into 1985.
As for that "Maniac" "click" sound interspersed throughout this version and that version of your "Solid Gold" theme, I would like to know if it is from an electronic keyboard or a separate musical instrument. It certainly gives the 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 versions of your "Solid Gold" theme song a sound like no other version throughout the series.

      @bigeyezzzzzzz  Год назад +2

@@jasonburger3533 The “clicking” sound you refer to was actually done by a very staccato synthesizer sound, and, if I recall, I remixed the backing track from the previous year so that it would work best with Deborah Davis. anyway, keep enjoying, and thanks for all of your positivity!

@@bigeyezzzzzzz Thank you for that inside information about that "clicking" sound on your 1983-1984 Marilyn McCoo "Solid Gold" theme and that of Deborah Davis for the 1984-1985. The 1980s was definitely an age in which the synthesizer became so commonly used in popular music. "Staccato" describes the sound very well. It really caught the musical vibe of 1983-1985 and that rhymes. Every version of your theme that was used on the show has its own unique musical signature of Michael K. Miller. That rhymes as well. That was not intended, but inspired.
I recall a reference of the "Solid Gold" show on one of the early episodes of "The Golden Girls". Gold was in both show titles and television programs.

As of yesterday, October 22nd, that marked the 40th anniversary of the original date of broadcast of this "Solid Gold" clip and the beautiful trio of Air Supply (Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell) and Marilyn McCoo on the Air Supply hit song, "Sweet Dreams", and it all has aged well over the time since 1983 and is as contemporary than ever and outperforms much of what the current "contemporary" is considered. These "Solid Gold" performances and their performers have aged very well and look and sound better over time. That is contemporary, in my opinion, and well-done behind-the-scenes, including the Musical Director, Michael Miller, who helped put the ensemble together.

One thing that is missing from themes today (not only themes themselves) is the proper closing. That final refrain of "SOLID GOLD" always had that reverb that I always remembered growing up. I didn't like it as it meant the show was truly over but I always appreciated it as that reverb (with the dancers' final pose at the close of their routine) was the final stamp before the OPT and Paramount Television logos. That final refrain packed a lot of muscle. It let us know who they are and what they represent and did NOT want us to forget it.

Happy 54th wedding anniversary to Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. In 1983, at the time this closing credits and particular version of your theme song, the local CBS-TV affiliate in Los Angeles, KNXT-TV/Channel 2, since 1984, KCBS-TV/Channel 2, had a 30 minute weeknight entertainment/lufestyle show called "2 On The Town". A special feature aired on "Solid Gold" on a particular episode. "Solid Gold" gave them behind-the scenes access. The program hosts were Steve Edwards and Melody Rogers. Connie Chung used to be a host on the show when she co-anchored their news from 1976-1983. Melody Rogers and Steve Edwards tried out to be a Solid Gold Dancer. Steve did not make the cut, but Melody did. A lot of the 1983 Solid Gold Dancers were on set to help with Steve and Melody. As part of the feature, Steve interviewed Marilyn and Billy, who were married 14 years at that point. He asked them about if they thought it would last for 50 years. Their response waa sonething on the order that they did not know, but come back and find out at the 50-year anniversary. Well, "2 On The Town" is long off the air, but Steve Edwards had been on other television shows local to Los Angeles through tecently at "Good Day L.A." More recently, he was on KABC-AM 790 radio and had a podcast. He might have retired.
Michael, do you recall "2 On The Town" doing their feature in 1983 on the popularity of "Solid Gold" and The Solid Gold Dancers? Steve was clumsy, but Melody fit right in with the Solid Gold girls. A clip of that and the Billy-Marilyn interview is on RUclips somewhere. Inwas wondrring if you have that part of the episode that would have aired either in the summer or fall of 1983. Anyway, that is 40 years ago and seems like eons, but it was funny watching the program hosts try to be a Solid Gold Dancer for a day. The interview with Marilyn and Billy was a more serious tone. However, it was a good segment on the "Solid Gold" series. Glenda Wina, Marilyn's older sister, was a health and fitness reporter at the time on their local newscssts.

I recently noticed the 18 audio clips of variations of your "Solid Gold" theme under the topics Michael K. Miller and Various Artists. The comments are closed for those, so I am putting one here as they are all very good.
The 2nd verse version with the "Maniac" "Flashdance" vibe differs from the original second verse version that you had posted on July 26, 2020. The singer, Gail Lopato Lennon, is the same. I wonder which version was recorded first and when.
Anyway, the brief funky and kazoo versions are kind of humorous.
It states that they are all provided by TuneCore. I have not known of them before.
Many of the others are longer versions of the original themes by season and the two Slowly versions from the "Solid Gold" show and the Johnny Carson version as well.
It is a different format and is interesting that they are on a different channel, actually two channels, and I noticed the December 12, 2014 date on the Various Artists channel. The Michael K. Miller topic channel has September 1, 2022 as the date initiated. I just found them by chance.
Thank you for those, especially the different versions not on your regular channel. It is very much a "Solid Gold" tribute to the show and its iconic theme song.

Good day, Jason! Glad you are enjoying the various versions of my theme on my "Michael K. Miller" artist's channel. Regarding the "Various Artists" channel...I think it's some sort of auto-generated channel done by RUclips, but I have no idea how the tracks are handled. In any case, TuneCore is the distributor that I engaged to put my 18 "Michael K. Miller" versions on all of the streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, RUclips and many others). And, as to exactly when I recorded the different "Maniac" versions, it was 40 years ago, so...I can't say. In any case, thanks so much for your kind words and I hope you continue to enjoy the ever-spinning gold. 🤗

@@bigeyezzzzzzz Good day to you, Michael! Thank you for that information about the "Michael K. Miller" artists channel. I do not mean to seem like an old fuddy-duddy, but I am curious why those tracks were placed on that channel instead of your regular RUclips channel and why the comments are turned off on that channel.
Additionally, I am still getting used to RUclips and am astounded at all the streaming services that exist.
Anyway, the gold still spins. The version of the full "Solid Gold" theme with the second verse has Gail Lopato Lennon singing it with the "Maniac" vibe, which differs considerably from the 2020 original second verse version that you released on your regular channel. The differences are very noticeable in the musical accompaniment, but the lyrics are, of course, the same as the other release.
It is something that the movie "Flashdance" and its soundtrack, which includes the song "Maniac", is from 1983 and that the music must have been recorded in 1982, as was the movie, so you are right, that is 40 years ago. The time has gone by way too fast, but the music remains and sounds as modern as ever, with lyrics that have individuality, meaning, and resonance that stand above the current sound-the-same popular music, with some notable exceptions.
"Solid Gold" was a syndicated showcase of superb talent that continues to shine as it did originally.🙂 The Morpheus Panaspots were a unique feature that helped give each show that golden shine.

I know that I have commented much on this wonderful theme and asked questions and that you have provided answers, but I watch and listen to this particular "Solid Gold" clip among others that you have graciously provided to RUclips, and do wonder on who did the backing vocals on this particular theme and how that was recorded and if it was done separately from the main Marilyn McCoo theme and then put together in post production. That theme did have a different variation than the earlier and later Dionne Warwick themes and those which were duets that Marilyn McCoo sang with others, such as Rex Smith. There was one season with kind of a mystery singer in the mid-1980s. I wonder who that female singer happened to be. Anyway, no matter who sang it, it was and still is a Solid Gold hit.
I still sing along myself out loud while watching these clips and sometimes at other times spontaneously.
There is a mystery second verse that has additional lyrics that follows the same melodious tunes. I wonder why that was not used.
Anyway, I think that the show could be brought back as a classic music hits showcase that brings back the hits that were done on the show and done currently by the same artists that did them then, provided they are still active.
No matter what, this theme was and is a masterpiece of a television music/variety shows and still gets people to dance, sing, or both. The Solid Gold Dancers were a wonderful part of the show, the very many men and women who shared the stage over the 8 years of the show with the hosts and the performers and had a live studio audience and a captivated home audience. This was appointment television at its best and we were fortunate to have such a television show that showcased the musical arts and had comedy as well as that very entertaining theme song that is a vital part of the history of the best show of its kind on television past pr present. This is Michael Miller (composer of the Solid Gold theme song, and musical director of the show), and it's always great to hear how our show brought joy into the lives of others. I recently re-listened to the 1984-1985 version of your "Solid Gold" theme sung by Deborah Ludwig Davis and noticed that it retained the "Flashdance" "Maniac" pulse to it, which includes a version that you had uploaded that has the second verse as well. On the show end credits for 1984-1985, I notice that your name is not included in the credits for musical director, as no musical director is listed, but your name is included with Dean Pitchford as it usually was and that was the case with "Solid Gold Hits", the weekday 30 minute spin-off of "Solid Gold" that aired in the late spring and early summer of 1984, with host Grant Goodeve and no vocalized version of your theme.
There were live performances by guest artists in the 1984-1985 season, so I wonder if you had taken time off from being musical director that season, as that was kind of a weird season with Rick Dees the host for the first part of the season and guest hosts to finish off that season.
Your name, Michael, returned as musical director the following season, 1985-1986, which was when Dionne Warwick also returned as host. It was nice to see your name back in the closing credits for musical director that season and then be credited as Mr. Michael Miller in the 1986-1987 season, the last season with live guest artist performances.
You helped give the show the pizzazz that made it the success that it was and even some of the guest artists, such as Madonna, have placed on their RUclips channels some of their "Solid Gold" performances. That says much.

@@bigeyezzzzzzzWell, your theme song for "Solid Gold" was used in the opening and closing credits of "Solid Gold Hits", but they used an instrumental portion except for the choral shouts of "Solid Gold" 4 times on the ending theme. No vocalized sung lyrics were used and the theme song instrumentation sounded as if it could have been from the 1983-1984 season or 1984-1985 season of the main show. However, RUclips credits that appear on an upload show that they, if correct, that they used the 1984-1985 theme song that had the same instrumentation as the 1983-1984 season, as the Deborah Davis version is listed along with your name on the upload credits, along with TuneCore. As for the on screen credits, the chyron had already changed on the main show by May or June 1984 and those were used on the end credits of the weekday "Hits" version. The dancers were called The Solid Gold Hits Dancers and there were 5 of them, instead of the 8 on the regular series. Many, if not all, appeared to be from the regular series. The Paramount blue mountain and stars were used along with the same sound they used to at the end of the regular series episodes, but no Operation Prime Time, since the "Hits" version was marketed as an afternoon program. There was no musical director in the end credits. Alan Satchwell appeared in those as musical coordinator and your name, Michael, and Dean Pitchford got credit for the theme song.
Interestingly, on the June 2, 1984 edition of the regular "Solid Gold", Grant Goodeve, the host of the "Hits" program, had co-hosted with Marilyn McCoo and the new spinoff was mentioned along with the Solid Gold Hits Dancers, but not a roll call. Marilyn said to "check your local listings" for the new "Hits" spinoff, then stated the upcoming guests for the "Solid Gold" show following week's episode.
The premiere date for "Solid Gold Hits" was to be June 4, 1984, a Monday. That basically came to be a summer series, whether intended or not, even though it began technically in the late spring 1984. That was the same year that the Summer Olympics were most recently held in Los Angeles, so maybe there was a reason for the weekday hits version, although it went into reruns shortly after the Summer Olympics began. The Summer Olympics were from July 28th to August 12, 1984. So, they overlapped each other to some extent.

Since both versions were syndicated by Paramount and not bound by any network, that varied the days of the week and times of the day that a network-produced show could not do. @@bigeyezzzzzzz Yes, "Disco Duck" was a novelty quack-up that was a one-hit wonder in 1976, but by 1984 seemed out of place, as disco had been replaced by new styles of popular music, and that being so, as I recall, Rick Dees had been replaced by guest hosts before the 1984-1985 season was over.
There is a lot of speculation about whether the walking off of The Solid Gold Dancers and the studio audience on that December 1984 episode was for real or was done as part of a comedy act. Michael, I had noticed that even though the Deborah Davis version of your "Solid Gold" theme had played over the credits, that your name credited as Musical Director had been missing from the end credits, but had appeared with Dean Pitchford as the credits of the theme song. It appears that you might not have been musical director for that strange episode. It is a "Solid Gold" mystery like the elusive second verse of the theme and that is whether that was real or staged comedy that everyone on camera had appeared to walk off the set to leave Rick Dees proclaim that he had not felt so "stupid" in his life. Please settle the mystery. I am neutral whether it was disgusted individuals leaving the set or part of a strange comedy skit and why your name did not appear as musical director for that one episode. No matter the case, it helped bring back Dionne Warwick as host for the much more consistent 1985-1986 season of the popular syndicated television series.
Rick Dees was/is an excellent radio disc jockey, but he had not found as much on television, as his 1990-1991 late night ABC-TV series, "Into The Night With Rick Dees" had him replaced with guest hosts, including Chris Lemmon, the son of actor Jack Lemmon before the whole show had been cancelled. However, Rick Dees did have Marilyn McCoo on as a guest in March 1991, as she was promting her then-new Christian music album "The Me That Nobody Knows",had discussed meeting Pope John Paul II in person describing him as "our moral leader" her Fifth Dimension reunion tour, and her singing a solo version of "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)". At least they got that in before Rick Dees was gone from his own 1990-1991 television program.

It was entertaining at the time and full of intrigue for over 37 years and has been the subject of Internet buzz much like the formerly mystery second verse of the theme. It was both a crack-up and quack-up and I find it funny that in the year of the American bicentennial, 1976, the song had made it to #1 on at least one of the Billboard charts.
However, on the subject of Rick Dees having been the only host or co-host of "Solid Gold" having not sung the theme song for the closing credits, I was wondering if you are able to tell us whether that was his choice or that of you as Musical Director or someone else with the show that chose him not to be the singer for the closing theme or have sung your theme on-camera and how Deborah Davis had been chosen to sing the theme song.
I know that Deborah had been a back-up singer on the show, so that was a natural choice, but how she was chosen over the other male and female back-up singers on the show, I was curious how she had come to be chosen for that.
She was an excellent choice, by the way, to sing your theme song for the show, in what some call either the "Rick Dees partial season" or the "Disco Duck season". No matter how it went, that duck was one funny duck, pun intended, and I wonder if who wore the duck costume was the same as back in 1976 when Rick Dees had that as a hit song. I guess it said something funny about at least where some of American entertainment was in 1976 especially, when it first quacked up the disco world, and in 1984, when The infamous duck took to the "Solid Gold" stage and quacked up or cracked up audiences at home at least.

@@jasonburger3533 Thanks for your clever message, Jason. To answer your question about how it came to be that Rick Dees never sang my Solid Gold Theme: the fact is that it was never even a topic of discussion because my theme required a singer who could sing a really challenging song. Therefore, I chose Deborah that year because she sang on many projects of mine starting when we were students at UCLA - including when I won the Warner Bros./Columbia Pictures “Ode to Billie Joe” songwriting contest in 1976 (which they held nationally to promote the release of the Robby Benson film). Deborah sang on the single that resulted from that award. When did the other solo Marilyn McCoo version air and who, you, she, other show staff, or a combination of such, decided to have two versions of the solo Marilyn McCoo theme?
