  • President Trump highlighted his “America First” policies during his United Nations address Tuesday, saying "the future belongs to patriots." New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is among the leaders in New York for the U.N. General Assembly. Her country got global attention for implementing strict gun control measures after the mosque shootings in Christchurch. She spoke to “CBS This Morning” about how she got gun control legislation enacted so quickly, the impact of divisive rhetoric and her closed-door meeting with President Trump earlier this week.

Geoff Keil She’s a professional. That’s why and how she managed to evade anything that can be used to attack another country’s leader. ESPECIALLY alongside their own people (which is humiliating enough to make relations worse). She might be one of the few world leaders and politicians that Trump has not insulted so the relationship between the US government and the NZ one is not tense and filled with mistrust. I may not like Trump, but it doesn’t matter when you take the lives, needs and general wellbeing of millions of lives. She’s using a soft approach on diplomacy. Not directly criticizing or contradicting him. Plus it’s bad manners to attack foreign heads-of-state on their own turf. Even the Russians who are critical of their government would prefer if foreigners don’t come into their country to criticize to their faces.

I'm a Brit, in 1996 there was a mass shooting at a primary school in Scotland, in a town called Dunblane. A gunman killed 15 children, one teacher and injured 15 others before killing himself. A tragic story that we have heard from the US far too many times in the last few decades. In response to the massacre in Dunblane and the public outcry the government passed two new Firearms Acts within one year of the attack which banned public ownership of almost all handguns and rifles to the public. There has been no other mass shooting in Britain before or since that attack in 1996. I think that story truly speaks for itself. I hope beyond hope that America can see that it is possible, it is necessary and that you can hunt deer with a bow and arrow just as well and you get the added bonus of never fearing your childs life from a gun when they go to school. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. :D

“There is a natural tendency, particularly for women, to wait until they have EVERY skill required”. That resonates deeply with me. Suddenly, I feel that she just put into words the exact thing that’s keeping me from going after my dreams. Simple, yet powerful observation. Very powerful. The kind of thing you know deep down, but actually hearing it from a successful and competent person makes you realize that this is a common and real problem, not just a dumb personal setback.

If you ask random NZ why they need guns, pest control and hunting would be the first reasons.
If you ask random Americans why they need guns, protection from bad people would be the main reasons.

Misleading. New Zealand is a small country with few guns to begin with. It has a small population as well. The US is a large country with a large population but even still the number of guns in proportion to the population is 1 to 1. Few if any countries have that proportion of guns to population. We don't have more "bad people" in the US than in other places. What we have is arguably the easiest access to guns for the amount of "bad people" to get them. 10,000 gun homicides a year in the US with a population of 325 million people. The amount of gun homicides in the UK is less than 50 per year for a population of 65 million. If our model followed UK then we would only have around 300 gun homicides a year instead of 10,000. What is the difference between USA and the UK? The proportion of guns to people. The ease of access to guns and what guns are available to the general public. Why is there such a difference between the countries? Because no other country, not the UK or anywhere else do they have a right for private citizens to own guns and the easy access to them in the form of laws. Why was New Zealand able to so quickly change their gun laws after the massacre? (1) No 2nd amendment (2) No NRA bullying parliament members into doing nothing. Let's look at the UK again for an example. In 1996 they had the Dunblane massacre. Parliament immediately acted and by the end of the year laws were changed. Since 1996 there has been no school shootings in the UK at all and there has only been 1 mass shooting. Columbine massacre happened in the USA in 1999. What has happened since then? Well Congress let lapse the Federal Assault Weapons Ban in 2004. Providing easier access to assault rifles and high capacity magazines of ammunition. We average 1 mass shooting a week and at least 1 school shooting a month. We average 30 gun homicides a day. And in 2017 Stephen Paddock purchased 55 assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition in the form of high capacity magazines in order to commit the largest individual gun massacre in US history.
So what can the US do to reduce gun violence? Pass more gun control laws is one thing. But that only has a certain limited effect. What we really need to do is to repeal the 2nd amendment and turn gun ownership into a privilege instead of a right. Instead of a well regulated militia, we need a well regulated system of gun ownership.

One reason another American Revolution never kicked off in other Brit colonies like New Zealand is precisely because the American one happened. The Brits at the time thought "oooh crap we'd better loosen up our Empire a bit," ran its other colonies with a lighter touch, and New Zealand thus never gained anything like the US's Second Amendment. Or its gun culture.
That's the key, really. New Zealand doesn't have any militias, well-regulated or otherwise. The security and freedom of its State have never been under enough threat to make them necessary. Kiwis like me don't look at our Prime Minister here and think "she's coming for our guns, rarr rarr tyranny."

Carmen - That's the difference in NZ and the US. Our gun rights were given to us to use against the government if or when they become oppressive. NZ is a different can of worms, because your head of state is the un elected queen, or dictator to be precise, and you live under the Monarchy rules, where you are subjects to the will of the royal family. They own everything, including your guns, and you are granted the privilege to own them. At any time that privilege to own those guns or any property, can be taken away and the government will take back their property. It's why they call it a gun buyback, everything belongs to the rulers in Buckingham Palace. Recently they decided they want their guns back, so they told Jacinda and the other puppets to pass a law and confiscate them, not because they are worried about your safety, they are worried that those guns could be used to overthrow them. "These are military styled weapons and we can't let you subjects have equal firepower with our military and police". When the nutcase did the massacre, they used this tragedy to take the guns from millions of people that did nothing wrong, and if you disagree, well then you must be sympathetic to that mass shooter, or you must be someone that doesn't care if young children are murdered with these guns.

Most Aussies and Kiwis who live near to SE Asia are culturally ignorant of the SE Asian culture. Jacinda is one of them. Wearing a hijab only showed that she did not understand the symbolism behind head covering. Most Muslim women in Malaysia and Singapore did not wear the hijab before the 80s. They only started wearing them due to the resurgence of radical Islam from the mid-70s onwards.
"Drawing on his own experience of combating Islamic terrorists in Southeast Asia, the late Lee (Kuan Yew) identified several leading causes and named Saudi Arabia and its oil money as one of the main culprits for the spread of radical Islam.
“First and foremost, after the price of oil quadrupled in 1973, Saudi Arabia has generously financed the missionary movement by building mosques and religious schools and paying for preachers throughout the world, spreading the teachings and practices of its austere version of Wahhabist Islam,” he said.
Lee said the spread of Petrodollars led to an increase in religiosity worldwide and made it possible for extremists to recruit from Saudi-funded mosques and madrassas. He saw that first-hand in Southeast Asia where people practiced a moderate brand of Islam but some had turned radical and joined Jihadist fighting in the Middle East.
In answering an ultra-sensitive question on what role Islam plays in fuelling Islamic extremism, he didn’t shy away. “Muslims want to assimilate us. It is one-way traffic…They have no confidence in allowing choice,” he said. “Muslims socially do not cause any trouble, but they are distinct and separate… Islam is exclusive.”
