I too ran into the thieves guild issue of being lead around for days and due to dedicating so much effort into and never being explained that there was a tiny window to earn a new skill that I too ended the event with no new skill. Which locked me out of doing true Alchemy. (Clearly my fault for not joining you for class as I had originally planned) I do look forward to giving it all another shot and hopefully not when there is a heat wave! Being from Louisiana I definitely underestimated a "heat wave in the north". -A goblin named LeeRoy
So I was one of the two people who ran a safety/theatrical class before game on, and checking weapons especially arrows was something we covered. Sadly we’re just players so our words only have so much weight but trying to have players at least check their own weapons was something we advised people to do before, during and after a fight to ensure it’s still safe to use. We do wanna retool the lesson to be a bit more safety focused, and maybe have a second class that’s more about theatrics instead of one class covering both. So hopefully we can help the safety aspect of drachenfest as we learn as well the best ways to express how to play safely. I guess also for anyone who sees this, there is a safety and beginner’s theatrical class planned as well for next Drachenfest.
Excellent video Davvy! I was the yellow shirt lots of hair rat healer you can see at 35:10 with the shirt with all the symbols on. I do remember seeing you around and seeing people I recognize in this video again filled me with all the feels again. I was fortunate and had a really nice time with the guilds and the game but I agree there needs to be more explain before hand even if its just 'hey guilds have 1 main class, be sure you are there for it, time decided on game on' so people know to focus on that if they want the skill. The heat was a tough one for sure but a neck fan I kept on low basically the entire fest at least helped me keep my rat head on basically the entire time. So I would highly recommend that for others! Big agree too on the staff doing their best but it was a very tough situation to be in for sure. They were super on the ball for when heat issues came up and thank goodness they decided early on to institute the main battle siesta - that helped a lot. As an Amtgard player I also have to say its unfortunate that so much of LARP and similar things are a 'you want to win' rather than you 'want to have fun'. I just wana be a Skaven man not have to drumroll people so they actually take their hits. In regards to safety I think its supposed to be more of a camp specific thing but even then thats really hard to try and organize with so many people. And even a totally safe weapon used in an unsafe manner is going to hurt someone. Its a hard nut to crack that one :( It was interesting to see the staff labor breakdown as well - I have to fly in all the way from Oregon so not fully thinking about it this time but maybe third time I'll sign up to be staff. As the second time I hope to try the Bazaar as I was Shadow Camp year one. But great video again! Subbed up and will be seeing if I can see you again in 25!
Completely and wholeheartedly agree with your critique and thoughts!!! This is an amazing break down of DFUS and last year. Also, as the Alchemy Guy that got schlepped out by golf cart: DRINK WATER. HOLY F*** DRINK WATER. HEAT EXHAUSTION IS NOT WORTH THE CONSTANT RUNNING AROUND. But also as that Alchemy Guy, the experiment and Flesh Garden events were the highlight of the LARP for me!! So much fun!
So much relatable material. My daughter and I have been going since Origins. We don't concern ourselves too much with the game mechanics; we're mostly into roleplay and interacting with other characters. It is essentially an in-character camping trip for us with a few sword fights and some magic thrown in. Last year we were sending people on little side quests by leaving cursed items around the bazaar. As for the game runners- many of them are people I met when I first started larping about 4-5 years ago and they are some of the finest people I have ever known.
holy hell, miss this guy right here. was sad when dnd vids stopped and even more so when content stopped all together im so excided to see what is in store
heck yeah man. As a uk larper, it's very cool hearing about american larps, all I've heard before is boffers and weird safety rules, but it's fun to find out it's largely the same. Any larp with combat will have a weird level of competition even if it's rules light, european larps are not free of that (or at least uk based aren't). I'm also surprised to find out there's only around 1000 players at the american Drachenfest Edit 1: Sorry, $200???? Edit 2: You should try sending Mark Hulmes from High Rollers DND a message, maybe you could end up at empire larp in england
please please please take the less step long way on that hill if you have any sort of condition that makes it dangerous for you. This is by no means meant to be a put down to anyone, but just a bit of advice from someone who has been going to that site for a long while 😭🙏
When it comes to reacting to things that are bent/broken rules, it helps if you're familiar with "high trust" games. In other words, where you don't stop and say WHAT WAS THAT or otherwise retaliate. You just don't react to things you can see are incorrect. If it's a safety issue, you use the "Oh Mother" method. If it's not solveable and is continuing (not an accident in the heat of the moment), then go to a ref when a calm moment arrives. Nothing else is worth it. Nothing. If it's actually a big deal the refs will also generally agree. We think the best of each other (they forgot, they're hot and tired, they're new, we don't know their story) and look at the big picture (the scene, the fun.) One of the issues I often found was that despite the supposed theatrical nature of the fighting, people's instincts would take over in groups and the boffer steamrolling would happen. I understand, I was always tempted to behave more realistically. I was trying really hard to do it the right way, though. So sometimes I would be in the middle of fighting someone also doing it right, and then their friends would try to drumroll me down. I just ignored and focused on the guy. One of them said, "WHAT you are not going to take any of that?" I just quickly said "No" and went back to the proper fight in question. Interestingly, it stopped there and I got to complete an epic fight (and die). I think they either realized what had just happened or their friends clarified it for them. I think people will get better at this over time, or at the very least, get better at not stressing out over it. I am not referring to the weapons check type safety stuff, by the way, which I agree needs some solutions.
As somebody who plays a Large Monster, the call to not summon any of us for the big battle was correct - we were all in a steady state of mild dehydration - but also disappointing, since I would've liked to bring that kit out that night.
herbology sounds increadible. if I ever go I'd 100% go that route that just sounds like so much fun. But god cyphers without my phone? that'll be so hard lmao
They should let herbalists (or other skill havers) "teach" someone their skill. This would promote RP and story through connections with other players.
Are you planning on going to Bicolline? Also keep in mind Drakkenfest US is relatively new and the people running it do so with help from the German larp runners
Hi dav. Longtime fan. I know you said that you wouldn’t make a video if it was a good time but I feel like I want to hear about your positive experience with this larp. There is a lot of negativity in the RUclips space. I would love to hear some positive thoughts
The people were great, the staff were great (just overstaffed), the roleplaying among everybody was amazing, the guilds were very fun (when they worked), it's definitely a good time overall unless you hit a random pitfall that makes things bad.
The guild thing really bugs me because of how easy it would be to fix. Just have the lessons more than once. Also maybe do something about how fucked the thieves guild is but if you have a later lesson then at least people have more time to navigate the fuckery.
The ad card doesn't seem to work, so here's an easy link to the burg website, code already applied: burgschneider.com/davvy
oh boy its my favorite youtuber davvy chappy
Hey, I was the General of Green Camp in 2024. I really enjoyed your review. Hope to see you again in 2025.

Thank you for this review, it's interesting to know especially as we in Australia just had our first Drachenfest LARP happen last month. 🐉🙂

That was a lot of fun getting a look at something that's interesting, but not something I would attend. As always, your descriptions are top notch!

This was great and a very fair review.
Yep, the safety protocols at DF are just bonkers.
Mushrooms you say
You’d be great at this

Didn't go to 2 or 3, might maybe go to 4 but it's a real maybe. Half worried I'm gonna have to watch my back after the video I made.
