Quest'anno sto studiando l'opera lirica, i cantanti si sforzano tantissimo (come i cantanti di questa canzone😅) perché trattengono il fiato e tirano fuori la canzone con il fiato che avevano trattenuto. ❤❤❤❤
After a lifetime of singing, I am just discovering Va pensiero, and it is sublime. Verdi certainly could write for the voice. It lies so perfectly in the vocal range, it is so lamenting, so deep, so musically uplifting. I am learning it, belatedly. So glad I lived long enough to sing Va pensiero. I think it is the most famous Italian choral piece.
I am not a musician so I can’t explain how this piece affects me. I discovered it during the Covid lockdown and now listen to it every day. I think I am becoming obsessed with it.

Seeking solace, sharing sorrow: the story behind "Va, Pensiero" (the Hebrew Slaves' Chorus from Verdi's "Nabucco") In these times of isolation and suffering in Italy and around the world, I think of famed composer Giuseppe Verdi, who was no stranger to grief. In 1838, at the age of 25, while working on his first opera ("Oberto"), Verdi bore the first of a series of profound personal tragedies: his first child, daughter Virginia, died in infancy. The next year, his infant son, Icilio, also died. A year later, just after the debut of his second opera, "Un Giorno di Regno," encephalitis claimed the life of Verdi's beloved young wife, Margherita. In his anguish, Verdi vowed never to compose another opera. La Scala impresario Bartolomeo Merelli, hoping to persuade his friend to compose again, proferred Verdi a new libretto, but he rejected it out-of-hand. Fortunately, however, Verdi later decided to take a look. He came upon the hope-filled lyrics of the chorus, "Va pensiero, sull'ali dorate," and immediately became inspired. The result: the four-act opera, "Nabucco," set in 583 B.C., which tells the story of Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, and the Hebrews he enslaves then sends into exile. Since the debut of "Nabucco" in 1842, opera companies often sing "Va, Pensiero" more than once, as the chorus is so popular that audiences demand encores. Notably, the NY Metropolitan Opera chose to open its 2001 season (in the wake of 9/11) with "Nabucco": the performance began with the chorus singing "Va, pensiero," in honor of the victims of the attack. "Va, Pensiero" is sung by the chorus in the opera's third act, after the Israelites have been captured and imprisoned in Babylon. Here is an English translation. Go, my thoughts, on golden wings: fly to the hills and valleys Where warm and gentle breezes breathe the perfume of our homeland. Greet the river Jordan, greet the ruined towers of Zion. Oh, my beautiful lost country! Oh, beloved and fateful memories! Golden harps of the prophets, why do you hang silent? Rekindle the memories within our hearts; sing to us of better times gone by. Remember the fate of Jerusalem, and sing in bitter lamentation. O Lord, inspire us with courage to bear our suffering. ####

wow! thanks for this work, please keep uploading more choral music, as I myself am in the choir of my city its a great idea to syncronize with the sheet music...greetings from México
This great anthem - one of my favorites in any language - should be the national anthem of Italy. Their current national anthem makes no impact on the crowd during either a rugby or a football international. I have heard it many times but I always forget it immediately.
It very much was the Italian national anthem as soon as Verdi wrote it. He couldn't write about Italy directly, precisely because they were under Austrian rule, so he used the Hebrews in Babylon as a metonym. When Verdi died, the crowd sang it all along the route of his funeral procession. They weren't thinking about Hebrews.
From time to time someone proposes the adoption of this choir as national anthem. Our official national anthem is much humbler and somehow naive, but it was composed by a young patriot who died in battle during Italy's independence war. It was also meant to be temporary until a better one would be written and chosen. Despite the incomparableness of the two pieces I can say I love them both but while nabucco moves my human heart, Fratelli d'Italia moves my Italian heart. I don't even know if this makes sense.
I would like to see a scrolling version, including the full orchestral score, like those of gerubach. The S A T B could be reduced to two staves or even one for much of it.
Understanding the words of this wonderful music. When Verdi did compose and write this wonderful music the Jewish people had no land. This music made me to understand the feelings of a people without a country. I am happy Israel today is a country. The name Israel was given by God to Jacob as a covenant and Israel now is restored forever. The restoration of Israel is a prophecy fulfilled.

I am trying to play along with this but somehow I do not get it. The music sounds like 3/4 or maybe 6/8 but the sheet music is in 4/4 ? What am I missing?
It’s a very slow 4/4; each quarter note of the bar is mostly divided into triplets, so that’s why you’re feeling the 3/4 or 6/8. You could fit 4 3/4 ‘bars’ into each measure of the piece or two 6/8 ‘bars.’ Does that make sense?
