Zen Here: Finding a Home in the West - Retreat with James Myoun Ford Roshi

We'd like to invite you to a two-day retreat with James Myoun Ford Roshi on 21/22 September 2024. It'll be in-person at Blue Cliff Zen Centre in Eugene, Oregon, and online via zoom.
Beginning formal Zen training in 1969, James Myoun Ford Roshi has long and deep experience of Zen practice in both monastic and non-monastic forms. We are honoured that Myoun Roshi has agreed to reflect over his many years of deep work and the many lessons learned participating in the process of transplantation of Zen to the West. On the first day of the retreat Myoun Roshi will look backwards and share some of these lessons. On the second day, Myoun Roshi will project these learnings forward, laying out the essentials that need to be in place for Zen to flourish within Western culture over the next century.

I liked the take of my old teacher, the wonderful maverick Nishijima Roshi. He said that Buddhism wasn't a religion but a sort of direct and practical humanist philosophy. He saw potential for Buddhism going this direction in its new encounter with the west.
I think when people examine their own humanity and find no spirit, no god, nor any dazzling Buddha for that matter, but just our own remarkable ineffable existence, we will no longer need religion nor spirituality, and will grow up somewhat as a species. Best Regards, Harry
