So I am in awe when I look at any pro doing their thing. He did say it was tricky to single pin pick. ...probably because of how small the pins are and how many pins there are; there's every chance of more than one pin binding at once, so it would be tricky releasing enough pressure to pick the second of two mutually binding pins without dropping the first one you've already picked. I can imagine it's quite frustrating to pick (which is probably why he just sawed off the tips of the pins with the sawtooth rake, in frustration of bricking the first lock and wanting to relieve his stress a little). ...that's what MasterLock padlocks are really for: stress relief. Lol!
There is a sense of momentary security when LPL praises the company that is protecting my house... That fades away when you realise that he is about to pick the lock from that company...
I mean don't feel too bad, it did give him some trouble. That's usually a mark of high praise. Beyond that, locks do nothing to actually secure your property, as he demonstrates on this channel, other than to deter the lazy or opportunistic. If somebody *wants* into something, they *will* get in, just a matter of time.

Yeah, their machine might mill keys accurately down to a millionths of an inch, but if most of the lock's mechanisms were a tighter tolerance than several thousandths of an inch it wouldn't even operate.
Now that the first of the Diamant padlock is "bricked", it would be interesting to see if the torch technique works when applied to it. Great videos - educational and entertaining.

Literally this, but it was because "Karl Jobst viewers" watch this. So, apparently this is what RUclips suggests when you like the behind the scenes of speedrunning.
Bought a lockbox as a kid once with a little opening to store pennies and shit. Managed to pick the lock with a hairpin when I was 13 years old. I know its a shitty lock, but at the time I never felt so badass before in my life.
Most lock boxes don’t have pins, it costs too much. It’s probably just the key pushes a single thing at the end as it goes in, and then it turns. I found this out when I used a paper clip and folded then bit it to make it smaller, I put it inside and as soon as it reached the end, it was able to turn. There’s not really a reason to use pins and small mechanisms on a child’s box, cuz not many people will go after some kids penny’s and drawings. Unless their a kid as well, in that case the kid probably thinks locks are impossible to open without the key, so they don’t even try, they just break it open.
LPL: "It's pretty tricky, it took me about..." Me: "Wow, if he says it's pretty tricky, it must have been quite a lot of time!" LPL:"...3 or 4 minutes". Me: -_________-

Thanks, LPL! I've been picking for a month and I've already bricked two locks, neither of which were in use. No harm, no foul. Your "golden rule" about not picking a lock in use is absolutely true!
That makes sense if it bricks itself at the start of an attack, but he was able to get the europa open first and then it bricked, which if it happened to a person using it for security, would mean that at best they're out of a lock they know is not totally secure and at worst they are now locked out of whatever they use it on next until they can get it cut open.
You shouldn't judge yourself too hard. It's educational. At the very least you will know which locks to avoid relying on. It's very addictive, like watching how the insides of a wind up clock work. (I've bricked a few clocks in my time).
It doesn't. As he mentions, the zink used in (many!) locks will melt away extremely quickly and then the lock is done for. But obviously this is still faster and safer, so why use a torch?

This lock has two types of variants available in market 1. Stainless steel, and 2. Brass. So Stainless steel/Brass refer to that, because they use the common packaging material for both.
Assuming you like and know a lot about cars, of course. It's really just passion for something and the willingness to put time into learning the intricacies of it.
I picked a ML model 911 once, in reverse because of the core tension, used a plug spinner and somehow turned the core to a point that pins fell into the mechanism. It became a relatively expensive paperweight. Great video as always!
after closing that lock you should have tested it to make sure that the key still works. some locks may have a sort of "collapsable circuit" built in that they jam once picked or provide forensics evidence

DancingOdie The point is deterrence. Any lock can be defeated with enough time, the point is to make a would be criminal spend so much time trying to defeat it, that they risk detection and thus move on to another target instead.

No only is it pickable, its pickable by someone with little skill simply by raking it. Kind of sad. Good video! I'm not suggesting you are not skilled (you are) only that raking doesn't require nearly as much skill as single pin picking.
As an engineer, lock picking is interesting to me. As a welder and former general contractor, my lock picks are bolt cutters, angle grinder, or a sledgehammer. Yes I have had to pick a few locks for work (actually pick, not destroy) but generally I tell those working with me to look the other way after I get permission from the owner. My lock pick set is one I made, so having it did not require a crime, but generally walking around with lock picks can get you in trouble if they are found, so I have a spot for them in my work bag. Picking a lock with the consent of the owner is legal by the way.
Grew up in India and Godreg was such a household name for everything from almirahs/wardrobes to locks. Indians usually own a lot of precious metals so I was really happy to see the company featured and talked about so highly.

I have to agree, the videos are always very informative and "to the point" in a very tight time frame, which makes them, very enjoyable to watch as to not waste a lot of time in the day, yet still be able to experience the video to the fullest. That, and the great audio, which was already mentioned in a previous video.
Danny Blue The thing is,if we can't see the inside of the lock we can't know for sure if he trully picked it,he could have very easily removed all pins except two or three and making it look very easy to him!!
Interesting. I just got one of these. Unfortunately i hadn't seen your video yet.. i was able to open it in about 90 seconds with a combination of raking and single pin picking and mine seized up after that as well. I did eventually get the key working but can't get it open raking or picking anymore. Also a small piece fell out of it which is the size of a master wafer but lens shaped and fits in the dimples on the key. The lock has an upcoming date with miss dremel in the hopes that she might be able to get it to open up about it's problems.

It wasn't a lock in use, just a lock a fan sent him. He just brought up the "never pick locks in use" thing because it was a good opportunity, since the lock happened to brake.
I was expecting the same, but at the same time, he mentions that it was "hard to pick" (3-4 minutes, LOL), so, it means he picked it at least once, and then he says he is going to rake it because it is faster (and complains that it takes longer now "that the camera is on"), so, it means, at least, he raked it once. So, yes, I was waiting for the demonstration that it was not broken too, but with the context we can assume that this one did not break after the picking (if, as he did, you take care in the last step to make sure you don't push anything inside).

It is zinc die cast, same than zinc alloy. The Diamant padlock uses a KESO 2000 core or a VERY good knock off! It is a bit older as it does not have the pin in pin technology yet. Getting these stuck while picking them is very easy that is why you have to be very careful picking them. I would be interested in such a padlock but just to whether the core is a real KESO or a fake one. Keso cores are used very often in locks and padlocks around here. Many companies here do also use the EVVA 3KS core within their padlocks. Some European companies do it too such as Anchor Las and others. Interesting video! Best wishes, Adrian

The packaging said that it was stainless steel/brass clinched. Clinching is a method of joining sheets of metal mechanically, usually by layering them then pressing a deformation into the surface to lock them together.

LOL... yeah, there were a few $$ in that Godrej parade. But mostly because of shipping. They are not all that expensive by US or Euro standards in India. It's the shipping and price-gouging international resellers that really can make it bad.
I am really shocked that it could be raked open. I can only guess it's partially due to the fact that these dimple locks can not have extreme bitting like traditional pin tumbler locks. Nice work LPL

Oh dude, you didn't?! This can happen with Kaba locks too, you're right, the pins and springs fly into the keyway itself when you rotate it too far. You can stop it happening, once picked you fill the keyway with a material that would act like the key. Or, if you're feeling cavalier, you can do what you did there and put your pick along the bottom of the keyway and use that to stop them flying out. That's living on the edge though man! Funny that they put "unpickable" on there, that's like a red rag to a bull :-)
when i lived in Thailand in 1988 my house had a steel gate with a WEIRD dimple keyed circular /tubular shaped lock that was UNIQUE and way ahead of its time , i wish I had it today , to send to the LPL to see if he could have beat it . It was pure sci fi to look at .

I'd imagine some locks are designed to brick fairly easily when faced with a picking attack. Better bricked than picked.
That makes sense if it bricks itself at the start of an attack, but he was able to get the europa open first and then it bricked, which if it happened to a person using it for security, would mean that at best they're out of a lock they know is not totally secure and at worst they are now locked out of whatever they use it on next until they can get it cut open.

You shouldn't judge yourself too hard. It's educational. At the very least you will know which locks to avoid relying on. It's very addictive, like watching how the insides of a wind up clock work. (I've bricked a few clocks in my time).

What about doing a torch test on the broken lock to see how well it holds up the the heat.

As he mentions, the zink used in (many!) locks will melt away extremely quickly and then the lock is done for. But obviously this is still faster and safer, so why use a torch?

@@EnjoyCocaColaLight because most of the time common crooks do not know how to pick locks and would prefer to cut or torch them. It is a practical and real-world scenario.
This lock has two types of variants available in market 1. Stainless steel, and 2. Brass. So Stainless steel/Brass refer to that, because they use the common packaging material for both.

3 to 4 minutes for an expert like LPL means it would take normal pickers close to 30 minutes to single pick the lock!

I picked a ML model 911 once, in reverse because of the core tension, used a plug spinner and somehow turned the core to a point that pins fell into the mechanism. It became a relatively expensive paperweight.

Yup... these things happen every now and then even if you know what you are doing. That said, you might be able to recover your 911 with a deep hook.

after closing that lock you should have tested it to make sure that the key still works.
some locks may have a sort of "collapsable circuit" built in that they jam once picked or provide forensics evidence
I love my padlocks that become unusable if someone is courteous enough to pick it instead of just cut of break it :D

DancingOdie The point is deterrence. Any lock can be defeated with enough time, the point is to make a would be criminal spend so much time trying to defeat it, that they risk detection and thus move on to another target instead.

As an engineer, lock picking is interesting to me. As a welder and former general contractor, my lock picks are bolt cutters, angle grinder, or a sledgehammer. Yes I have had to pick a few locks for work (actually pick, not destroy) but generally I tell those working with me to look the other way after I get permission from the owner. My lock pick set is one I made, so having it did not require a crime, but generally walking around with lock picks can get you in trouble if they are found, so I have a spot for them in my work bag. Picking a lock with the consent of the owner is legal by the way.

I have to agree, the videos are always very informative and "to the point" in a very tight time frame, which makes them, very enjoyable to watch as to not waste a lot of time in the day, yet still be able to experience the video to the fullest. That, and the great audio, which was already mentioned in a previous video.

Godrej is one of the most innovative companies and has a pretty good lock lineup compared to most of other locks that he's picked.
Godrej is one of the oldest and best lock makers in India. They make cupboards too. I have one that is 80 years old and still works fine.

Interesting. I just got one of these. Unfortunately i hadn't seen your video yet.. i was able to open it in about 90 seconds with a combination of raking and single pin picking and mine seized up after that as well. I did eventually get the key working but can't get it open raking or picking anymore. Also a small piece fell out of it which is the size of a master wafer but lens shaped and fits in the dimples on the key.
The lock has an upcoming date with miss dremel in the hopes that she might be able to get it to open up about it's problems.
Thanks for the tip about bricking your locks, i had planned on testing my skills on a lock we use to lock the shed and mom would've killed me if i broke it 😅

I was expecting the same, but at the same time, he mentions that it was "hard to pick" (3-4 minutes, LOL), so, it means he picked it at least once, and then he says he is going to rake it because it is faster (and complains that it takes longer now "that the camera is on"), so, it means, at least, he raked it once. So, yes, I was waiting for the demonstration that it was not broken too, but with the context we can assume that this one did not break after the picking (if, as he did, you take care in the last step to make sure you don't push anything inside).

It is zinc die cast, same than zinc alloy. The Diamant padlock uses a KESO 2000 core or a VERY good knock off! It is a bit older as it does not have the pin in pin technology yet. Getting these stuck while picking them is very easy that is why you have to be very careful picking them. I would be interested in such a padlock but just to whether the core is a real KESO or a fake one. Keso cores are used very often in locks and padlocks around here. Many companies here do also use the EVVA 3KS core within their padlocks. Some European companies do it too such as Anchor Las and others. Interesting video! Best wishes, Adrian

The packaging said that it was stainless steel/brass clinched. Clinching is a method of joining sheets of metal mechanically, usually by layering them then pressing a deformation into the surface to lock them together.

Had one of those stuck on a metal gate once & I ended up picking it with a blowtorch, while it's outer shell didn't melt ,it's insides flowed like Mercury (hg) as it's body glowed bright orange 😆,there was melted metal all over the place & a hot shackle hanging above

LOL... yeah, there were a few $$ in that Godrej parade. But mostly because of shipping. They are not all that expensive by US or Euro standards in India. It's the shipping and price-gouging international resellers that really can make it bad.

Godrej locks are pretty cheap in India. Most locks are cheap in India. It costs like $3-$15 on most locks
I am really shocked that it could be raked open. I can only guess it's partially due to the fact that these dimple locks can not have extreme bitting like traditional pin tumbler locks. Nice work LPL

We are using Europa and Godrej locks from so long but we didn't knew that these locks are so great!
Oh dude, you didn't?! This can happen with Kaba locks too, you're right, the pins and springs fly into the keyway itself when you rotate it too far. You can stop it happening, once picked you fill the keyway with a material that would act like the key. Or, if you're feeling cavalier, you can do what you did there and put your pick along the bottom of the keyway and use that to stop them flying out. That's living on the edge though man! Funny that they put "unpickable" on there, that's like a red rag to a bull :-)

“Zinc alloy” is just their way of saying BRASS. it’s mixed with zinc, silica, and copper. Very very very low melting temp
when i lived in Thailand in 1988 my house had a steel gate with a WEIRD dimple keyed circular /tubular shaped lock that was UNIQUE and way ahead of its time , i wish I had it today , to send to the LPL to see if he could have beat it . It was pure sci fi to look at .
LPL: A user sent me something they were nostalgic about. Its the GTFCKD series L0L lock. Pretty low quality stuff that unlocks when my dog barks at it. Anyways thanks a lot for sending it across.
