  • Tales from the Cryptkeeper is an animated horror children's television series made by Canada-based Nelvana.
    It was based on the 1950s EC Comics series Tales from the Crypt and the live action television series Tales From The Crypt, which aired concurrently on HBO. Made for children, Tales from the Cryptkeeper was significantly milder than its live action version.
    There was also a mostly forgotten game show called "Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House" a toyline and a whole bunch of other merch.

    I miss all of the horror themed shows aimed at children. There were cartoons like this one but the 90s also had Goosebumps and my personal favorite, Are You Afraid of the Dark?! They don’t make horror themed tv shows for children anymore. Tales of the Crypt Keeper was definitely an interesting cartoon to say the least! I also really liked the live Action Tales From the Crypt HBO series. The 90s were great for horror themed tv shows! The original EC Comics were fantastic! The artwork and crazy stories were all great! I’d love to see someone make an animated anthology Tales From the Crypt series thats based off the original comics. Now that would be a great cartoon!

    I think it's important to note that it was DC and Marvel who provided the Comic's Code of Authority's rules as they could easily comply to them but also in an effort to take down EC as they were their main competitor and had a large share of sales at that time which gave way to the superhero genre to take better hold on the market.

    • @RABartlett
      @RABartlett 3 года назад +2

      You could say the industry tried to specifically make life harder for Gaines, but otherwise
      1) It was DC and Archie that were the ringleaders for the CCA. While Marvel (then Atlas) was part of it, they were not the behemoth they would go on to be. They were more like a slightly high rent Charlton--basically flooding the market with ripoffs and would swiftly turn gears at the next big thing. They had their own tawdry horror comics line, and were themselves severely crippled by the whole affair as anyone--it's said it only survived because Martin Goodman didn't want to explain to his wife that her cousin (Stan Lee) no longer had a job.
      2) The dominance of superheroes was the effect, not the cause of the CCA restrictions. By that point, only a handful of superhero comics were being regularly published, half of them being part of the Superman family. The revived DC superheroes were pretty incrimental, and not officially here to stay until 1960. Fantastic Four #1 would not be published until 1961, which would seem to be quite the long game from all the parties involved, and a entire generation of readers as far as the industry was concerned at the time.
      3) The biggest publisher of the era was not Marvel. It was not DC. It was Dell Comics. According to Helen Meyer's testimony, which was very much about throwing E.C. under the bus, was that their comics did about a quarter of Dell's business. As their comics tended to sell about a million copies a month, this would put "Tales From the Crypt" at about 250,000. Healthy sales, and pretty much unheard of for today, but this was about the numbers a book like "New Warriors" did in the early 90's. Definitely popular enough for spinoffs, but not something the sent a chill down the spine of competitors. It should also be said, in her testimony, that "crime" always preceded "horror". The genre was the junior partner in the twosome. People forget that "Crime Does Not Pay" was a super popular book at the time, and Lev Gleason had socialist leanings.
      Gaines was definitely a pariah in the industry, because of his colorful, aggressive personality, and because he gave the industry media attention they did not want. (Half the times comics were a front for mob activity.) Not because Stan Lee was sitting on Spider-Man and knew as long as the Cryptkeepr was around, nobody would read his adventures.

    I enjoyed watching this show as a child and now continue to enjoy it as an adult. I also believe that you can rate the season from best to worst in chronological order. Season's one and two were pretty amazing and then the government started intervening in Saturday morning cartoons with a push on education and moral storylines that taught children right from wrong because some parents started complains and writing to their local and state representatives that their children weren't perfect little angels. News flash, if you have children it is your responsibility to teach them moral values not the government, which brings us to season three. After a two year run of thirteen episodes each from 1993-1994 it returned in 1999 with a new season of educational and moral values with happy endings after someone learned their lesson, which was a complete opposite of seasons one and two in which sometime there was no happy ending, except for us the audience who was able to enjoy 30 minutes with the Cryptkeeper.

    I’m Team Ghoulardi. I’m biased though because I’m from NEOhio, where Ernie Anderson got his start. The guy oozed class, even if he was a campy weirdo. FunFact: Anderson narrated the opening to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. But that’s not the fun part: did you know that J. Michael Stracz- _[chokes to death on candy corn]_

    They show this show all the time on Pluto TV. They're always advertising it on other kids channels and, while she hasn't watched it, my five-year-old is intrigued by it and really wants to watch it and the crappy Archie's Weird Mysteries cartoon from the 90s for some reason.
    I'm just disappointed that the real Tales From The Crypt series isn't on HBO Max, but apparently the rights to the show are a tangled nightmare and getting streaming rights negotiated is a no-go.

    How could someone argue comic books contribute to illiteracy? Comic books have, y'know, *text* on the pages.

      The argument that was they have fewer words per page than novels do. Also, they tried to legit argue that the quality of the printing damaged children's eyes.

      @@wayn0r That is hilariously stupid. Going by that logic, handwritten letters made kids dumb unless they were a research thesis.
