Elon Musk accuses undocumented immigrants to vote in presidential elections. He forgets undocumented immigrants are not allowed to vote.
It's a big thing in far right conspiracy circles right now. Alex Jones has been on about if that gives you an idea about the quality of the racism and idiocy. It comes from the fact that two cities have considered letting green card holding legal residents vote in things like school board elections, since their taxes do pay for those services, but only those specific local elections.
So this conspiracy has been a thing since probably before 2024. It's promoted generally by people who do not understand immigration law, election law, or common sense. It comes up because of racism and the inaccurate assumption that immigrants = Democrats. But it also comes from Republicans' more restrictive views on voting and voter ID vs. Democrats'. Generally, to be eligible to vote, you have to prove 1. Citizenship and 2. That you live in the area you are attempting to vote in. The first is usually proven by driver's licenses, passports, having an SSN, and the second can generally be proved by a wider variety of documents like bills in the area, bank statements from the area, government mail sent to the address, voter's registration card, lease or mortgage. (And yes, certain immigrants can get driver's licenses and SSNs, but I'm pretty sure those both indicate their noncitizen status. Either way, illegal immigrants generally cannot legally obtain driver's licenses or SSNs for the obvious reasons)
Republicans tend to require a driver's license and restrict things such as early voting, the number of polling stations, same-day registration, and now absentee voting. This will prevent some people from voting and make it more inconvenient for everyone in those areas. Democrats do want more people to vote, and since the Democratic constituency tends to have more low income and minority voters, Democratic voters may not be able to vote during work hours, at particular polling stations, or have driver's licenses, for instance, so they tend to favor more flexible voter ID and voting policies. This DOESN'T mean that no proof is required, just that more forms of proof are accepted. In more Democratic areas, if someone's eligibility to vote is in question for whatever reason (ex. You moved recently and updated your registration but have no proof of your new address etc, showed up at the wrong polling place, etc.), they would have to fill out a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are counted after regular ballots and are investigated by the local Board of Elections to confirm eligibility. So basically any illegal or accidentally ineligible votes would be discovered and thrown out.
Again, because voting is mildly inconvenient to begin with and pretty hard to successfully commit fraud at, election fraud is super uncommon... it's something like less than .0006% of all votes, maybe lower, and most voter fraud is probably unintentional. (Worth noting that most of the recent reported cases are Republicans trying to vote for Trump on behalf of dead people, though!) Also, and this is obvious, but people without immigration papers are not going to draw attention to themselves and risk being deported to vote. Even people with status will not risk their future citizenship by voting illegally (lying about being a citizen to get any kind of benefit is generally a black mark on your citizenship application and may in fact be a crime).
They repeat it enough to their friends. Like open borders and illegals are gonna vote.
While ur 100% right legally, and I think the whole “mass illegal voting” conspiracy is so blatantly wrong and misguided, it is still possible for undocumented immigrant to simply lie and pretend to be someone else.
So like they can walk into the booth. Say my name is Joe Smith (assuming they know their friend Joe Smith is registered), verify their identity by signature and address, and then go vote. Yes, it’s definitely a stretch, but not impossible.
Obviously going through all that sounds stupid to me, an American-born citizen. Like why would they take on such an enormous risk to vote for their preferred party by committing identity fraud? I would think they’d be a 100 times more afraid to get caught by the system and deported than they would care about the outcome of an election.
Source: I worked as a U.S. poll worker in a liberal city/state. I loved the job, but hated the mandated lack of identity verification.

I don't think the OpenAI lady understands that "publicly available" does NOT mean "license-free". Like, publically available stuff is still under copyright and requires license fee payment unless it is literally from a database that explicitly marks it license-free. ANYONE who's ever tried to use a pic by just using Google image search for commerical purposes knows this

Unlike licensing work for commercial products, training an AI isn't a matter of choosing a small handful of specific images that you're going to include in your book or website.
The training data is millions or billions of images. The training data is most similar to asking a human artist to list every piece of art they've ever seen in their life.
Requiring billions of license agreements is ridiculously impractical.

Then there's the Senate giving equal representation to both of those states despite insane population differences and the House which disproportionally represents the GOP given Democrats tend to be super geographically concentrated in urban areas and they're just not expanding the House to adequately represent the actual population in blue cities/states. Not letting the blue-skewing Washington D.C. be properly represented is also freaking wild to me. I would include other territories too but they shouldn't belong to the US unless they explicitly want to stay/have statehood. You a mess.

yeah mostly agree, though THE new aspect of Machine learning tools is that they're entirely based on generative tech and have a training phase, wich just doesn't compare to any functionality of previous tools. On one hand that means new dimensions of manipulations can be explored (like mixing between concepts), but that also uniquely complicates how it fits within our ideas of IP since so far it appear to be very good at automating aspects of what many people considered as "a creative process"

No Those times are a myth anyway. I always hear people talking about the mythic past before the Internet. And I feel like people fetishize it to a huge degree. But the truth is before Internet people were watching like three or four hours of TV at night. There were three channels and people largely had opinions they were programmed from TV with. Conspiracy theories and stuff like that were not as common because people didn’t get to think independently. And didn’t get to choose from a bunch of different mental programming that was styled for their specific group or whatever it was just mass media stuff. As an outside observer, it seems the American "left" only have this position because they're currently on the losing end of it. You have no idea how an actual popular vote would go, when those who normally don't bother to vote (Rs in Cali, Ds in Arkansas) have a motivation to do so as their votes will actually count. Libs just believe they have supremacy, so advocate for change to a system that they think they will win in.
This is the same people who believed "white rural conservatives are dying off and we get all the brown people by default so we will always win from now on".

It's more that it's dumb unless someone is really stupid and puts it in charge of something with no oversight. AI is definitely not close to self aware yet and it's laughable to even claim that it's nearing that point. The issue is that there is no black box to see how the AI came to its conclusions so many people are using that as a smokescreen against accountability.
I'm that middle ground lolz. Yes it's annoying that art is being tarnished by it. But it can also help artists in other ways so it's a bit complex. It has helped advance malaria cures so that's great news considering Malaria kills more than the IDF lol.

Humanity has gone through this sort of thing before. We lived this way pre-internet. For good or bad, we lived this way pre-internet. It used to be that you read a newspaper, watched the news on TV, and you heard what the news anchors said and you took it with a grain of salt. You always had a level of uncertainty and skepticism. Facts were facts and could be verified, and news reporters had to give their sources, because any jack on the street could make garbage up. When The Internet came along, for some reason people started to feel like they didn't need to give verifiable sources. For some reason people didn't think they needed to state where the facts where from so that people could check those sources. The Internet became a bunch of people saying, "This is happening, just trust me. And I heard this was happening, but I can't tell you from where, go look it up yourself!" Well, now with AI, the idiots really can't just say, "Go look it up yourself," so they have to know their own sources or, at least for me, I'll dismiss them out of hand (actually, I already do that, but now I think more people will). There won't be this, "I'm not your secretary, go look up what I'm telling you and prove to yourself it is real!" garbage. People will have to remember sources, be able to give sources, or have other people shrug and figure it was just some AI generated garbage they saw. Even though, I don't know why people don't already do that... Now people won't know if the person they're talking to on The Internet is a real person either, so we'll have to go back to communicating in person. I think and hope this will push people back to communicating face to face, afterall, how do you know if a person is real even in a video call now? I mean, in some cases that's not going to matter if they're real or not, but I think most people are going to crave real human contact and the only way they know they're getting it is to see real humans in person. Right now, they think they're getting real human contact via texting and social media, but when all of the social media could be AI, who cares anymore, right? Seriously, I think if we don't destroy ourselves we could be heading into a better future from this issue of things being easily faked. Everyone being skeptical about everything goes back to how it was pre-internet. And while there were mega corporations taking advantage of people, throwing people off their land to build railroads, and Japanese people got rounded up in the US and put into camps for no other reason than they were Japanese, and Jews were rounded up and put into camps through Nazi Germany for no other reason than they were Jews before The Internet, we have Russians killing Ukrainians for no other reason than they're Ukrainians and we have Israel and Palestine fighting each other because they can't decide on how to share the same piece of dirt in peace. Nothing has changed except the speed at which information travels. It used to be a war would break out and we'd not hear about it for months or years, or not at all, then a war would break out and we'd hear about it in hours, or days, or not at all. Now a war breaks out and we hear about it practically before it actually starts. We saw the whole Ukraine War unfolding right in front of our eyes. - I think our government is going to know the sources from their satellites are real images. I think our government is going to use trusted spies, just like always. It will be us, the "common people," who won't know what is real or not, but that forces us to take care of things locally. Instead of fighting over who is the governor of Texas when we don't live in Texas (most of us) and every congress person being on stage for all of the world to see every second, we can focus on who our congressperson is. We can focus on who our governor is. We can focus on who our mayors are! People worry more about The President and Congress, when the local city council and mayor (if you have one) has more sway on their day to day lives. People worry more about who the governor of a state they don't live in is, than they do about the governor of their own state. We need some introspection and to pay attention locally! If everyone cleaned up their own yard, we'd have a very clean world. But instead everyone complains about the yard in a state that's hundreds of miles away from their own needing to be cleaned up. I think if we don't nuke ourselves humanity will be better off returning to everything being taken with some skepticism.
I think what you’re noticing is now instead of one metanarrative for truth which is what we pretty much had before The Internet now there are a bunch of competing metanarratives. And people cannot even agree on what the facts are so they are not useful to employ. The idea of a fact itself is kind of propaganda. And a propaganda term.
