  • BRANDENBURG: "Absolute disaster for the FDP!" Even the animal protection party is better! Expert with plain language
Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke's SPD narrowly won the state election in Brandenburg, but must find a new coalition majority to continue governing. In a final spurt, the Social Democrats managed to get 30.9 percent of the vote after all votes were counted on Sunday. The AfD, which is classified in some parts as definitely right-wing extremist, was relegated to second place with 29.2 percent. "It was a tough job," said Woidke in Potsdam. During the election campaign, the 62-year-old had announced that he would step down if the AfD finished ahead of the SPD. The AfD had been ahead in polls for a long time. According to the figures, the Greens failed to return to the state parliament, which is why Woidke cannot continue the so-called Kenya coalition of his SPD with the CDU and the Greens.
According to the state election officer, voter turnout rose to 72.9 percent. Five years ago, it was 61.3 percent. The Greens only received 4.1 percent, failing to clear the five percent hurdle. The Greens were also unable to win a hoped-for direct mandate in the Potsdam I constituency, which would have taken the party into the state parliament with any vote. The only party that could help the SPD to gain a coalition majority would be the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance. The BSW received 13.5 percent from scratch. The CDU only achieved 12.1 percent. The FDP, Left Party and Free Voters all failed to clear the five percent hurdle.
Woidke said his aim was to ensure that "our country does not get a big, brown stamp". This seems to have been achieved. He announced that he would first talk to the CDU about forming a government, although both parties together do not have a majority in the Potsdam state parliament. During the election campaign, the BSW had stressed that it only wanted to participate in a state government that sent a clear signal for peace in view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The BSW also rejects the stationing of new US missiles on the territory of the Federal Republic. However, the federal government is responsible for foreign and defense policy.
SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil sees the election result as a message for the entire party. "We know that the federal level has not given us any tailwind," he told Phoenix. The SPD needs to focus more on the working middle class. Klingbeil avoided questions about the significance of the election for Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He emphasized, however, that the Chancellor had also campaigned in Brandenburg.
Scholz himself expressed his delight at the election result in Brandenburg on the sidelines of his visit to the United Nations in New York. "A great result, very great for the SPD, and for all of us," said the SPD politician in a video that Politico journalist Gordon Repinski shared on the X platform.
    "BITTER DEFEAT"
According to Infratest dimap, the SPD mobilized older voters in particular. There were also strong increases from the non-voter camp. The Social Democrats in Brandenburg gained votes from the Greens, the Left Party and the CDU, while the SPD lost votes to the BSW. The AfD is clearly the strongest force among younger voters. According to Infratest dimap, it achieved 32 percent there, while the SPD only achieved 18 percent. The BSW achieved 13 percent among younger voters, the CDU achieved nine percent, the Left Party seven percent, the Greens and the Animal Protection Party six percent each.
CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann described the result as a "bitter defeat" for his party. There had been a polarization between the AfD and the SPD, he said on ZDF. The fact that Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) had spoken out in favor of SPD Prime Minister Woidke had not been helpful. Linnemann, however, referred to the results of the elections in Saxony and Thuringia.
