There is a lot of research that Psychology students need to do for them to be able to decide what they want to get into with their degree. A BA in Psychology is very broad and opens you up to a lot of career paths. Dabbling in short courses as well could increase their chances of getting jobs in certain industries. As a psychology student, you need to be intentional about what you want to do. Think outside of practicing as a psychologist. You can become a consultant at management consulting firms, you can get into Tech as a UX designer or researcher, you can become a clinical technician, a behavioural economist, an ABA behavioural therapist, a psychometrist, a teacher, a recruiter, and a human resources professional. It is also very important to volunteer while studying as it helps with acquiring experience.

If you have strong academic transcript & good with numbers: You can become a data-analyst, investment banker, risk manager, software engineer, estate administrator, compliance officer, wealth manager/Financial planner, asset manager, financial analyst, with just a BA. As long as you're willing to wheel your career towards that

What an informative conversation. This conversation is needed for students enrolling for Psychology to make them understand what is needed to end up being a clinical/counseling/research Psychologist. I've come across a lot of people who have done psychology but their careers aren't related to that. I was shocked to find out through my own research that one needs a Masters to be registered as a psychologist and it then made sense why degree holders don't practice as psychologists.

Thank you for this episode. It was very informative. I'd appreciate if someday you could do an episode on job creation or the lack there of in SA. I am currently a student pursuing an undergraduate degree...and one thing I have noticed amongst myself and my peers is that we're all study to get jobs and not create them. I don't know if it's due to the environment in my classes or whatever. But I think that we should stop expecting these "jobs" to come from somewhere and perhaps (if possible) create them ourselves... otherwise of course if thousands upon thousands of graduates are all looking for work and very little to none...look to innovate and create work ...I feel that this partially is the reason for the unemployment of graduates.

Counselling Psychologists do diagnosis and treat mental illnesses and they can do long term therapy. Clinical psychologist deal with complex mental illnesses which are mostly diagnosed and treated in hospital or psychiatric complexes.
Both practices receive similar training however its scope of practice that can be different. But their professional scope is the same.

Hi Thando. I was literally in the same classes as her .. I'm now a registered Wellness Counsellor in private practice which is good that there's that now. The mental health field is getting more accommodating I love it. You can still help people, counsel and open a practice as a Counsellor while trying to get into Masters if that's what you want. My aim was always to practice and do short courses to expand my knowledge and expertise. One of my lecturers said Ýou have to decide how is becoming a Psychologist important to you and why? If it is to help people you can do that even as a counsellor and if you want the title and a bigger scope you can fight your way into Masters it's a simple as that - she said.
I personally enjoy counselling and only screening not diagnosing. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable to diagnose. Current;y my focus is short courses on my specialties .. I'm interested in going deep into Trauma especially childhood, Anger, and Grief. So ya there's a lot you can do. There's enough room for everyone.

This is a very important conversation. Im one of the people that discovered later in first year that it doesnt just take the undergraduate degree. Great 👌 explaination from Thando. I wish she could have mentioned the requirements to becoming a psychometrist too because thats another option to register for those doing honours

Can you please do an episode about PR + Communications and the importance thereof in the media industry… but also PR/ communications as a theory
Like psychology, we’re seeing a rise in the industry but what does it take and what other brands can one work apart from media centric brands

The board exam should be a prerequisite for entry into the qualification itself or at least strict psychometric tests/assessments. I think it's misguiding for people to get in based on marks and think they're going to become a professional only to meet that wall at the end. Better to limit the number of entrants from the very beginning but the institutions are greedy and want to take money from students who they know won't make it

Hi fam, I hate to off ramp but there is viral video of a lady crying about how hard it is to find real genuine love. She has everything but like Thebe would say go shorta Lenyora!
Having a lot of female friends, aunts, mother who have difficulfies locking in a 'good man' I think this is a universal problem. It would be an intreating topic to look into, maybe invite a lady who is in that predicament, maybe someone who managed to find love after a drought.
This for me is a concerning issue, in every public gathering, churches, clubs, g2gs the ratio of women to men is just too high...too many ladies are coming to the realisation they might never ever find a suitable partner.
