As I recall, the intro riff was a kind of second thought by Duane. He played it for the rest of the band and they loved it. Or, that's how I remember reading about it years ago. I first heard it when I was in high school in late 1970 or early '71 when it was playing on the radio. I said to my buddy..."What...was THAT!!!" To this day, after hearing it thousands of times on vinyl, 8 tracks, cassets,CDs and youtube for over 50 years, the intro STILL makes me jump as if I'm startled. And the coda at the end still makes my eyes misty...After all these years. That's what I call a masterpiece.
It was brilliant of Clapton to recognize that this great song needed the wordless second half. That almost-pause before the piano begins--it's just killer.
Actually he got that off his piano player, Bobby Whitlock, who was stealing some of EC studio time late at night. Eric liked it so much he told him if he could use it he could continue to work on his solo project on Eric's dime
@@scottrgood That's what I have always read everywhere (multiple interviews with Clapton). And Gordon actually "borrowed" it from his then-girlfriend Rita Coolidge. We all remember her - right?

Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Tell The Truth

The unrequited love of George Harrison's wife Patti caused EC a lot of pain. That she wouldn't leave her husband basically caused Eric to turn to heroin. Good thing he had some good friends that pulled him out of his funk. When they finally came to visit him months later he was so withdrawn he didn't even realize it was recieving heavy airplay.. During the recording of the album, EC came into the studio to find Bobby Whitlock working on his solo album on Eric's dime. He wasn't really mad, when he heard that piano part he told him if he could use it, then he didn't care if he continued on his solo project. Jim Gordon, the drummer, in a psychotic episode murdered his mother years later. Still in a phyc unit.
Not fully accurate, as I understood the storyline. EC lived with them b/c George was terrified that his friend was going to die from his addiction. Boyd remained in the house; George ran about doing his thing--and also cheated on her. When the marriage ended, she and EC moved forward and remained together UNTIL--he had a child with another woman outside their relationship. He wanted Boyd to parent the child with him--but she (who could not have children) felt so humiliated and lower than dirt, she elected to leave. At least that is her memory.
The way I heard it is that Jim Gordon came up with the coda, "borrowing" it from his girlfriend at the time - Rita Coolidge. She never got the credit for it. "But years later, it was revealed that Gordon had stolen the melody of the “Layla” coda from his ex-girlfriend, singer Rita Coolidge."
