This is the second episode of the Eyes Only series - where we use leaked and declassified documents to understand what’s really happening behind the scenes. Answering questions like: How do politicians wield their influence? What can documents teach us about their decisions and motivations? And what do the powerful say to each other when they think nobody is listening?
In this episode, we explore the run up to the Iraq war, and how the invasion of Iraq and removal of Saddam Hussein was planned within hours of the attacks on 9/11. We use leaked and declassified documents to tell the story of an influence campaign waged by senior Bush Administration officials, despite internal reports admitting that they had no evidence of WMD in Iraq.

    Iraqi here.
We, as Iraqis, knew all along that Saddam didn't have WMDs, nor any connections with Al-Qaeda. In fact, Osama Bin Laden hated Saddam and used to call him "Social infidel." Saddam even sent a letter of sorrow and regret for 9/11 to Bush through Ramsey Clark, but it didn't work. We knew the US came for oil only. Saddam started selling oil in Euros in early 2000, which the US did not like.
After the war, Cheney's Halliburton was awarded with a 7$ billion oil contract in the city of Basrah, only Halliburton was allowed to bid. No competitors. The Middle East became a safer place for Israel after Saddam was gone, and the US finally established military bases in Iraq, expanding their presence in the region, which to date they refuse to remove despite the Iraqi parliament voted to do so in 2019.
I was 8 when the US invaded Iraq, 10 when the civil war happened, and 18 when the ISIS war happened. It was a journey through hell itself.
Great documentary btw, keep the good work up!

Good morning (or evening), I don't often comment or reply, but I feel compelled to do so in your case. I used to work at a cardiologist office in the Chicagoland area and was doing some testing on an ex army officer. The topic of people we'd met came up, and he said that he actually met Saddam back in 1999 just a few years before 9/11. He told me he was the most well-spoken, respectful man and that he spoke fluent French as well. He was one of the men helping train the Iraqi military at the time, I believe. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Don't believe everything you hear outta Washington." I was 19 at the time. It's always stuck with me, and comments like yours always hit the point home even harder. Don't lose hope that there are people over here that don't believe all the propaganda that comes out of our side. Wherever you are, I hope you're doing well.

    All because of a lie.
As an Iraqi watching the footage of that wretched night it takes me back to that feeling of absolute horror and uncertainty as the sky turned red all of a sudden and missiles started flying through the sky from opposite directions, how my mother pulled me and my younger brother inside as we were watching from our small apartment's balcony and ran inside to put some useless surgical masks she had aqquired as she worked as a nurse on our little faces because rumors spread that the Americans will start bombarding us with chemical weapons.
I still remember hardly falling asleep in my mother's lap alongside my brother clutching to whatever little fake bravness my mother is trying to hold for us not to panic and to go to sleep.
In the mean time my father fidgeting between the roof and to the street, talking to the neighbors trying to make sense of what's happening as we all were taken by surprise, and finally sitting alone in the living room defeated as he was certian that his family's safety was no longer in his handa and there is absolutely nothing to be done against the goliath that is American army at our doorsteps.
Growing up, I can almost feel what my parents went through at dark times like those, and the travisities didn't stop at that.
the destruction of the Iraqi infrastructure didn't stop at only bombing importanct facilities like power plants, hospitals, shelters, oil plants, main roads, no the Americans knew just how to put us a 100 years behind compared other countries, an organized hunt mission on the country's best minds was initiated by the us proxies; doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, and much more.
a year of civil war followed, also induced by american influence that took the lives of so many poor innocent men.
I feel I wrote so much yet I told so little, I can write a book about what we had to endure just so chaney can get richer and so that Bush would get a round of applause at the congress. But after all who would listen, these facts are all presented and have been known ever since 2005 and yet no one was brought to court, I guess this is how the world works, where justice can only be seen in comic books and movies which are also american made.
And all of that happened because of that damned lie.

I am disgusted by American society to this day. How arrogant and ignorant most people are, and how proud they are of the country they represent. I’m in Florida right now and saw a crowd cheering at a veteran, thanking him for his service in the “war on terror”. “Well done buddy, thank you for murdering innocent civilians and militants who died defending their country from invaders.”
I bet those politicians are grateful for your service while they lounge in their yatch, thanking you for all that oil money you helped them steal. Shame on you.

Never elect such corrupt leaders again, and if some slip through the crack, protest them and don’t ever let you or your family support their terrible ideas. The only way to guarantee people like this don’t get elected is to be a unified front as civilians. We have the power in this country, but when we don’t stand united we lose all of it. If you’re a democrat, talk with republicans. If you’re a republican, talk with democrats. Be a patriot, love your neighbors, work well with the other party. Just because we have bad leaders doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love our country. We should love our country because if the civilians stand together, we won’t let bad leaders come to power. Tensions between republicans and dems was started by the government themselves so that we’d fight our neighbors instead of fighting them.

We knew they were lying then but so many people in the US were blood-thirsty (including the Bush Administration) after 9/11 that it seemed that it didn’t really matter how many people were against it, the war was going to happen. Can’t say that I’m happy to be vindicated all these years later because the war (like all wars) was a tragedy in so many ways. But I am proud to be on the right side of history. This video is a failure. They did no research at all. The US DID find WMDs in Iraq. The US admitted they found them in 2014 during the Obama administration after a freedom of information request. The US found thousands of chemicals weapons in Iraq from 2004-2011. Any quick google search will confirm that from any news source you want. NY Times, Wash Post, Fox New, Yahoo, BBC, anyone. The US didn't want to admit they found the chemical weapons they found because they were US designed weapons from the 80's and the Bush administration thought it would make them look worse (it wouldn't have). This myth that the US didn't find WMDs in Iraq needs to stop!

Saddened to see that this entire video is completely narrative driven and does not dive into any of the facts. The facts are that Saddam was attempting to create a nuclear weapon, and how do we know this? Because the chief nuclear scientist of Iraq was captured and forced to hand over all his work and equipment (this scientist details his work in attempting to create the bomb in his own memoir). Among the equipment found were many centrifuges, which for those who don't know centrifuges are necessary to enrich uranium (the fuel for a nuclear bomb). The CIA's assessment that Iraq already had a nuclear bomb was clearly false, whether that is malicious or not I'll leave to you to decide. But the question one should ask themselves is should you wait for a despicable evil to obtain a nuclear bomb? Or should you take action before they're able to create a nuclear bomb? The answer seems clear to me. I'd urge people to read Christopher Hitchen's arguments over the Iraq war if you're wanting to get into the actual details...

Yeah and shit like this is the reason why India, China and many South American nd African countries piss their pants laughing wehn we talk about crimes against humanity in front of the UN. The "western values" are a hoax.
Western countries should have sanctioned the US for invading Iraq just like the West sanctioned Russia for invading Ukraine. I would even argue that the US invasion of Iraq was even worse because it destabalized an entire region and bread terrorism on top of killing hundreds of thousands of people.
