The president is the leader. 5:58 the contention that romanians living in western countries and having a good life vote for the extreme right pro-russian trend is wrong. most of those votes likely came from people who live a difficult life in those countries, who feel unfairly treated by their host country as well as underappreciated and resented by their home country - so they want to believe in a beautiful, respected, welcoming homeland to return to. the pro-russian trend is hardly ever mentioned in the rhetoric so it is missed, and so is the extreme right aspect of that narrative. most of georgescu's message is about having a thriving homeland that goes back to fundamental resources (agriculture, water, energy) and basic national pride - which is very attractive to a segment of the diaspora that is overworked and underappreciated. finally, it is a universal trend that diasporas of all countries tend to vote against the system they left. Georgescu and this new far right (which was virtually non-existant up until the pandemic) is perceived as anti-system, so it's no wonder that proportionally they'll get a higher percentage there. but all in all, in numbers (not percentages), it is the romanians living at home that casted most of the votes for this guy. It's sad, but here we are.

You are absolutely right in everything you wrote. I am from Romania and have been abroad for over 8 years. We were humiliated in the most despicable way in our own country. It hurts me to say this but is the truth. I went abroad to work and make a better living for myself and my child and it was not easy for me. If it was good for me I would stay in my country but it was not. All Romanians who are abroad have similar situations, we all left for better things and to be able to provide our children with a decent life.We suffer a lot, we endure all kinds of insults even here, we work hard...! I'm Romanian and I believe what is not being understood is the fact that foreign businesses had been exploiting Romania's natural resources and workforce ever since the fall of the USSR. We are a poor nation without much knowledge about our history and to most people political allegiance doesn't matter too much. His discourse is religious, science denying, sympathetic to fascism which we know makes use of people's frustrations during times of economic hardship. Slogans, diluted populist speech that's easy to understand gets to people. Look at Brexit. It's not a good choice for the country but it is not surprising.

We're absolutely shocked by this "KREMLIN Georgescu" result. Imagine him as a Putin wannabe primarily educated in Austria (which we know is a Russian satellite at this point). Romania has some of the best agricultural land in the world, but agriculture is almost nonexistent at the moment. It has many water dams on the rivers that can produce electricity, and a dismantled Black Sea port. Romania is self-sufficient and could even export its resources and still be self-sufficient. However, it is buying back all the resources that foreign companies are exploiting on its land. Due to corrupt politicians, Romania remains poor. That is why people are hoping for change and are voting for him.

The president is the leader. 5:58 the contention that romanians living in western countries and having a good life vote for the extreme right pro-russian trend is wrong. most of those votes likely came from people who live a difficult life in those countries, who feel unfairly treated by their host country as well as underappreciated and resented by their home country - so they want to believe in a beautiful, respected, welcoming homeland to return to. the pro-russian trend is hardly ever mentioned in the rhetoric so it is missed, and so is the extreme right aspect of that narrative. most of georgescu's message is about having a thriving homeland that goes back to fundamental resources (agriculture, water, energy) and basic national pride - which is very attractive to a segment of the diaspora that is overworked and underappreciated. finally, it is a universal trend that diasporas of all countries tend to vote against the system they left. Georgescu and this new far right (which was virtually non-existant up until the pandemic) is perceived as anti-system, so it's no wonder that proportionally they'll get a higher percentage there. but all in all, in numbers (not percentages), it is the romanians living at home that casted most of the votes for this guy. It hurts me to say this but is the truth. I went abroad to work and make a better living for myself and my child and it was not easy for me. If it was good for me I would stay in my country but it was not. All Romanians who are abroad have similar situations, we all left for better things and to be able to provide our children with a decent life.We suffer a lot, we endure all kinds of insults even here, we work hard...! I'm Romanian and I believe what is not being understood is the fact that foreign businesses had been exploiting Romania's natural resources and workforce ever since the fall of the USSR. We are a poor nation without much knowledge about our history and to most people political allegiance doesn't matter too much. His discourse is religious, science denying, sympathetic to fascism which we know makes use of people's frustrations during times of economic hardship. Slogans, diluted populist speech that's easy to understand gets to people. Look at Brexit. It's not a good choice for the country but it is not surprising.

It's not economics that is complicated, it's the people that was communists that retained power and turned themselves in to our oligarchs. Most people are not very familiar with this candidate, as he has largely avoided political debates or public interactions with the people. Instead, his campaign appears to have been heavily reliant on TikTok, where we suspect a significant use of paid influencers and bots. This issue will likely be further investigated with the company that owns TikTok.
Now, I don’t claim to know everything, but I consider myself a level-headed individual. For the first time since I’ve become interested in politics, I’ve found myself genuinely alarmed by some aspects of this candidate and his platform. Here are my main concerns:
Fascist Glorification and Holocaust Views
He openly glorifies the fascist, or "legionary," anti-Semitic government that Romania had during World War II-especially the founding leader of the movement and the dictator of that period. His opinions on the Holocaust are equally troubling and raise serious ethical concerns.
Anti-Western and Pro-Russian Stance
He is overtly anti-EU and anti-NATO, even describing NATO as "the weakest alliance to have ever existed." His pro-Russian views aren’t tied to the ongoing war in Ukraine, as some might assume, but stem from his admiration for Putin as a leader. He has even suggested that Romania should fall under Russian influence.
This raises questions about his campaign funding. He has claimed that his campaign was entirely volunteer-driven, with zero money spent. Yet, shortly after the election results were announced, he moved into an upscale house in a wealthy neighborhood after years of living as a tenant. This sudden change in lifestyle warrants investigation, as there are no clear records explaining the source of this apparent wealth, leading to suspicions of potential Kremlin ties.
Criminal Investigation in 2022
In 2022, a criminal case was opened against him for "promoting the veneration of individuals guilty of genocide and war crimes." This refers primarily to his endorsement of Romania's World War II fascist regime, which was responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths-not through extermination like the Nazis but via deportations and other inhumane policies targeting Jews and Roma.
Extreme Religious and Social Views
He is an ultra-Orthodox Christian. While religion itself is not an issue, it becomes problematic when it infringes on human rights. He is also staunchly anti-feminist-not just opposing modern feminism, as seen in the West, but even the early feminist movements advocating basic rights. Essentially, he seems to support a societal regression to the 1700s for women.
Too Radical for the Far Right
The far-right party, which many believed had a strong chance in this election, actually expelled him for being too extreme-even by their standards.
Conspiracy Theories and Pseudoscience
The truly bizarre part: His platform includes claims that Romania’s water supply is "poisoned," and he plans to "purify" it. He believes abortion "breaks the line of life" in women, though it’s unclear what this even means. He warns that 5G technology is dangerous, yet amusingly uses a 5G phone himself. He promotes every conspiracy you can think of-moon landings? Fake. LGBT rights? Absolutely not. Reptilian shadow governments controlling the world? Why not?
These are incredibly concerning times. As one voter, I find it deeply troubling that someone with such views could be running for the presidency of Romania.

The top four television channels in Romania did not invite him to the debate, and he was only invited to the state television channel alongside candidates with 2-3% support. We're absolutely shocked by this "KREMLIN Georgescu" result. Imagine him as a Putin wannabe primarily educated in Austria (which we know is a Russian satellite at this point). He rose to prominence between 2019-2020 by copying some of Putin's marketing strategies (swimming in a frozen lake, posting clips with him training judo, stating that his preferred ideology is Dughin's), and of course he's an anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist (you name it!).
