- Some stunning aerial footage of the Birch Bark Pack feeding on a freshly-killed deer on the ice of Crane Lake, just south of Voyageurs National Park from a few days ago. This is something that occurs regularly but rarely does anyone get to see it in such detail!
In the video, you can see the breeding pair of the pack, the breeding female is the whiter look wolf in the front with a relatively distinctive face and the breeding male the wolf that drags the deer head off at the end of the video.
This incredible footage was captured by Brett Wenzel and Michael Schwanke, who each had drones that allowed them to capture this event from different angles.
In January, someone on our team actually had another neat encounter with this pair on a remote beaver pond. They hiked down to a beaver pond to set up a camera and out on the ice about 30 yards away the breeding male appeared.
This wind was in the right direction so the male couldn’t smell the person and so he just stood and stared trying to figure out what this person was. He eventually went back in the woods and then the breeding female popped out on the ice.
At first she stood and stared, but then she moved closer to about 25 yards or so away. This person stood perfectly still and she stood perplexed.
The male then started going around the far grassy side of the pond and the person watched him bound through the grass as he tried to get behind them, no doubt to pick up the person's scent.
And once he did, he came flying back through the grass and into the far woods. All the while the female continued to stare at the person.
Eventually, the female decided it was time to go and loped into the woods and disappeared. The person then set a camera on that beaver pond…seemed like the perfect place!

Very cool footage but the Drone clearly chased them off their meal. No need to be so close!
Notwithstanding the visible disruption and disturbance caused by the drone that many have noted, it is certainly a "stunning" video of wolves feeding on a vital food source perhaps during the harshest part of winter. Thank you for sharing!
Way to encourage these amateur assholes. There’s literally nothing amazing about both the birds and wolves being disturbed from their natural behavior.
Was the drone too close? It appeats that in the end it chased the wolves off.
A busy ice road. Deer could have been killed by vehicle or the wolves. In the end I doesn’t really matter the wolves cleaned it up. But the drone was unethically to close and spooked them.
The blood trail spells "w", but also "creed" in Arabic. As in "Wolf Creed"?
Please, don't mind my seeing things, I think cutting off sugar this Ramadan is catching up with me 😅
The wolves even split the deer into three separate pieces.
Wolves being wolves.
🫒🦈
Bon appetit!
What, nature is not all rainbows and lollipops. Thank you for the brutally honest video
❤❤❤
🐺🐺
bon appetit
Clean up in aisle four!
the wolves clearly still ate the carcass. Idk why u ppl are saying he drone interrupts them to the point where they cant eat or something damn. Calm tf down. The fact that the carcass was almost finished anyway tells you they werent interrupted at all and had their fill. They were probably just gathering scraps for the pups or something. The sound spooked em but theyre literally almost done anyways. Y'all are buggin over nothing. At least no one was here to kll the wolves so stop acting like a drone is affecting their whole mealtime? sensitive ass idiots istg. theyre fine. They moved the carcass lmao.
this looks more like a dead elk, due to the length of leg compared to 1 of the wolves. the color of the fur also
So question?
The implication is the wolves killed the animal.
Anyone esle notice all the snowmobile, atv, and truck tracks out there?
Who says the wolves did not find a hit deer or a broken legged deer or broken ribs?
But why was the deer out there one might ask?
Well they very well may have been chased into traffic but by what?
A dog, humans, a bear???
Any video showing the chase?
The only certainty here is the wolves ate the deer.
😂 stfu. You can see by the blood trail that the wolves killed the deer on the ice. Do you live in Minnesota? I do. Up north. Wolves chase deer onto ice to kill them. It’s what they do. Deer don’t frequent ice by choice. I snowmobile and ice fish for the last 25 years.
It was a fresh kill. Very fresh. If it was killed by humans, the wolves wouldn’t be around due to the noise of humans and their scent. You can see where the wolves took down the deer and dragged it.
Also, deer travel a lot to get food and water

Do not miss understand I know wolves hunt and kill deer and I take no issue with that.
But seeing all the human activity and having observed many animals immediately finding and eating the hit by humans animals right in the midst of human activity I see it as very plausible here.
I have almost hit eagles, vultures, every kind of k-9 and carnivore because they are feeding right on or just off of the road.
The eagle barely rose fast enough to clear the roof of my car.
I am simply saying we can not remove another entity from the scenario.
And carrion can look awful bloody after being fed on.
Also the stark back ground of white makes every spec of blood highly visible as well as not much of it being absorbed.
Sometimes a deer will completely bleed out and leave a visble blood pool no larger than 1 ft × 1.5 ft because the ground absorbed so much and multiple wolves dragging bits off makes the blood spread all over too.

I have seen plenty of deer on ice if the snow pack is deep enough. And I have seen pleanty of deer simply spooked by sound dash in front of a moving car.
I have been hit by deer simply deciding to bolt across the road with out provocation to run straight into my door.
Freeze, flight or fight and most often in that order.
"Woof, yeah I called in a to-go order for deer carcass, thanks! Gotta run!! Big brother is watching me."
Whoa, get away drone! Improve your technique please, don’t chase an animal running from you.
Maybe we should just leave them alone.
hush up karen
these wolves need to me monitored hence the channel name..
@@yeetlesbut does a drone need to fly around them whilst they try to eat? How does this aid research or protection of these wolves? It looks very much like it disturbed them and made them move away from the kill more quickly
@@TheJohnRowley
They have once before posted other parties video if they deem it worth while and they do not always clarify.

You people complaining about the drone footage - give me a break. It’s not like they can’t come back to feast some more on it when the drone leaves or carry it away like that wolf did in the end. They’re not dumb babies that can’t survive in the wild and need suburban idiots to coddle them. They are well feed, know how hunt, they are fine.
Why be sensitive for the wolves over the smallest little things?
Wow. Practice with drone.
Even though amazing footage (!)
Clearly the drone kinda scared them.
The trade-off is real
로드킬인가요😢
What is the biggest wolf pack in mn currently
"Officer, I swear it was an accident!" - Wolf probably.
Any way you can get in contact with me? I'm wanting to camp somewhere and watch some wolves in the "wild". From the south but a great friend lives in MN. Hope to hear back. Cool channel. Thanks!
You won't get anywhere near wolves to be able to watch them. You might see a random one but they know where you are at all times.
Cool Video cool RUclips 🐺👍🏻
Incredible!
Them monchin’
Look at the cute cuddly wolves lol super neat footage tho
