Great information! Best 6 speed videos on RUclips. Everything you explained makes perfect sense. You’re helping thousands of people understand their gearbox! Keep the videos coming!!
The amount I've learnt from this channel is insane. I thought I needed someone to run through even the basics of my car, but not anymore. Legendary stuff. Simplistically explained and with demos, which is amazing. I have caught up now, so hope for some content as the new season draws close. I watched the aftermath video, basically detailing the mapping. Horrified tbh. I have the same ECU by chance and a 500bhp build and was gutted to see what had happened. Good luck for Cadwell, hope to spectate so maybe bump into you. Thanks for the education thus far. Phill.
An excellent explanation and walk through yet again Sam! Isotropic and shot peening sounds like a really good plan before taking the dogset option. You do realise you are probably the UKs #1 subaru gearbox man nowadays!!! keep on rocking!
@@5501pickopicko I'm asking simply because you are more experienced and seeing how many times you stripped cogs makes me worried because I'm rebuilding my friends 6 speed now.
@@5501pickopicko Hey Sam! I'm rebuilding my friends gearbox and right now it's in the car. I have some issues with this. I would like to discuss with you. Could you give me your facebook, Whatsapp?
Around 680-700bhp and around the 600 lb ft torque area, I will be reducing the torque or at least lower down in the rpm range though to help with reliability moving forward
what if you start with a stronger OEM STI Gearbox ? I have seen videos where the STI 9 Gearboxes can take over 1000BHP stock .THey are deffo stronger than the STI 8 Gearboxes .Then get the Internals CRYO treated and Shot penned !
I’ve thought about this mate and it must be age related as side by side the gearsets are the same, albeit the newer ones have smaller woodruff location keyways. It’s gotta be the age of the sti-8 gearsets and fatigue and stress cycles on them now. Saying this I’ve got friends over here running the newer sti-9 dccd gearboxes and they suffer with the same failures. I hear you though, there are plenty of people running lots of big torques through those sti-9 boxes
*The 06 Gearbox is better for race applications as it has the Internal oil Pump as opposed to scrapers, so the 2006 model will greatly reduce the chances of Gearbox lockout Due to heatsoak and having the Oil Pump will also aid Cooling and reduce the chances of damage to the gearbox Syncros caused by the Gearbox oil Overheating and Thinning . *The oil pump for the gearbox was removed in the 2007 Model STI's for cost saving purposes ,although it has been suggested that there was a problem with the earlier(2003-2004) 6 Speed Gearboxes as the oil pump Shaft would break and there was a recall for this item. *The Gearbox on the 2007 model is meant to have a wider keyway on 3rd gear (Hope its not because the 2006 suffered breakages on the Gear )
@@RSADYNAMICS Oh yes, the oil pump in the earlier models is advantageous for my usage, I guess drag work and short stints it’s not really as relevant. In that respect, my gearbox design is better as it includes the oil pump, never had any issues with oil pump shafts though.
Honestly, I think you are just wasting your money. You've smashed so many gears, you need a step increase in strength not just a bit you get with cryo / preening etc. There are gearsets available for you, imo you'll be breaking gears again very soon and will regret spending money on a test solution rather than just buying a proper gearset.

How about switching to straight cuts or even a dogbox?? btw I am glad I found your channel, there is never enough info on GDBs, subscribed immediately

Cheers Ed 🤘 I’m really hoping this option is the one final fix for it haha 🤞🤞
You ever look into getting your gears cryotreated?
Interesting point. Have you tried smoother shifting?
Yeah I guess this would perhaps help things, just not help those lap times haha 😂
What warning did you ignore Sam, gearbox oil temp?
Something wasn’t happy, big nasty crunch for one reason or another
What is the reason of your cogs to be striped knowing that in drag application this gear set can handle well over 800 horses
I think age more than anything, also prolonged usage versus drag applications
