Actually, I like the sound of the bell. And probably most people who think the bell is "annoying" find trains annoying anyway, so there's no way to please them. You can't please everybody.
Just don't complain if the train kills more people trying to sneak across when the crossing arms are down just b/c they thought it was a little too "quiet" for a train to be around...
