Inside a Home That is Also a Ceramics Workshop

Inside a home that doubles as a ceramics workshop, a hub of community and craftmanship can be found. A house tour of the heart of Mud Australia reveals the ways that DesignOffice has incorporated the company’s timeless pieces of porcelain into a personal interior design.
Ascending the stairs of the Mud Australia workshop in Marrickville leads to a large, light-filled volume that functions as a workspace for the Mud Australia employees and the home of the company’s product designer, Shelley Simpson and her partner James. An eight-metre-long kitchen bench forms the focal point of the kitchen, where both staff and homeowners congregate. Whilst a public office space is an unexpected feature inside a home, it lends itself to the sense of community that Shelley Simpson and Mud Australia hold dear.
Inside a home that houses a collection of high-quality porcelain, it is fitting that the products take pride of place. Taking a house tour of the residence uncovers a gently shifting colour palette that slips from soft greys to greens and blues, emerging from the porcelain pieces. The structure of the home is painted in a neutral grey tone with a hue that coheres with the nineteen colours of the Mud Australia product line.
DesignOffice utilises the influential nature of materiality inside a home. In the kitchen, Laminex AbsoluteMatte is used on the cabinetry whilst Laminex HI-MACS covers the counter tops. The combination of matte and lustred finishes perfectly complements the textural exterior of the porcelain in the space.
Weaving together the working and residential environment, DesignOffice enables employees and residents alike to gather inside a home that embraces the Mud Australia community.
