    If you're looking for an arrow straight road to test those high speed vehicles.. the A15 would have been perfect, if it wasn't for the speed cameras.
    Today, not only are we exploring the straightest road the UK has to offer, we're doing so in style with a Ford Mustang! I might have taken a little inspiration from a Top Gear episode of yester year..
    Special thanks to the Red Arrows display team for their brief appearances.

    It's the straightest of roads in the flattest of counties, but that's not to say it's a flat road. There's plenty of hills and dips on it that can easily hide an oncoming artic and someone doing an overtake at the wrong moment. That's pretty much the reason for the cameras and speed traps, and it's happened a lot of times. Might be worth adding a bit to the video about this roads terrible safety record. I don't want to come across as boring, I'm a complete petrolhead myself (cars and bikes), but this isn't a road for testing a high speed vehicle.

      100%. The map makes it look like a really straight road so you kind of assume its gonna be some flat straight haven of a road for speeding.
      But driving it in reality, the road has lots of dips which go up and down which mean you don't always have overtaking opportunities. On top of that the road has some very slight kinks (on top of the Airbase kink of course) its not like perfectly straight. And of course, the speed cameras are there too. Not to mention HGVs trudging at like 40mph on it stop you from going faster anyway a lot of the time

    I'd argue that the Fosse Way at 200+ miles and almost straight is a contender. It has been broken up with the odd bypass and traffic calming scheme but it is a spectacular straight road. I used to take it from Leicester to Cirencester when working there on a site.

    You should try England's genuine Route 66, the A66 between Middlesbrough and Workington. There are lots of abandoned sections particularly around Bowes after the road has been upgraded over the years. That road in the '80's was a winding country lane whereas now it is a modern dual carriageway. The scenery is also spectacular.

    • @simaesthesia
      @simaesthesia 2 года назад +2

      I love that drive on the A66, but still one of the most dangerous in the country unfortunately.

    • @winco68
      @winco68 2 года назад +2

      You’re right the scenery is spectacular but there are still multiple sections of road that have not been dualled both in North Yorkshire and Cumbria. On the single carriageway sections some crossovers have been staggered or the formation altered to improve safety by increasing visibility but it’s still a dangerous road and really needs to be dualled in it’s entirety.
      And yes only 35 years ago it was a winding meandering country road and it took ages to drive from Darlo to Penrith now it’s really quick providing you don’t get stuck behind a tractor on one of the single sections. You’re taking your life in your hands by overtaking on those sections!

  • @paulroper4000

    I drive along this section of A15 quite often and it's a absolute pig of a road to drive. Although it's straight it's also very undulating making it difficult to overtake slower traffic. Also don't worry about the speed cameras driving along this section of road during the day. If you get above 40 mph you're do well because the amount of lorries and tractors that use this road has to be seen. Not a good road to test your high speed vehicle on believe me!

    RAF Scampton has a bow and arrow as their emblem....because that's how it (roughly) looks from the air after the runway was extended and road "bent"around it. Also the A15 starting at Hessle is relatively new, extended when the Humber Bridge opened. If you notice the A15 disappears along the M180 a few miles to link with the original road. Good video as ever

    Hi another good video. There was a long road in Thetford Norfolk but then they built the A11 on it & around it. That might go in your abandoned roads because you can still go on part of it but the rest they blocked off. If you put in main road south of Thetford on RUclips. You can see how long the road was. Also if you put in A11 construction from Thetford update. That we'll show you how long it is from the air & show you the old bit that they go around it.

    • @PhantomMark
      @PhantomMark Год назад +1

      As a truck driver myself I can say with some authority the crashes caused by crap driving and mostly oncoming vehicles cutting to the white line or more, causing the other vehicle to drop a wheel in the dirt then be pulled off the road......I can get flat out through those bends fully loaded both directions and stay within the lines, no drama. (most of the truck crashes happen on the wiggly bit near Caenby Corner)

    I used to live in a village called Hibaldstow near the Scunthorpe bit. It was indeed a straight road but it wasn't exactly an "overtakers mecca." There are stretches of the road which - while straight - dipped, and drivers would often pull out into the oncoming lane intent on leaving you floundering in their dust, to be suddenly confronted with an oncoming vehicle that they hadn't seen, rising out of the dip.

    "It's home to cities such as Lincoln", you should have stopped there, I'm pretty sure it's their only city, Scunthorpe and Grantham are towns aren't they?
    Now let's take a moment to laugh at Suffolk with its zero cities. They should make Bury St Edmunds a city, just because I know that will piss off Ipswich. And it's always good to piss off Ipswich.

    I've got a question and the question is: was the a15 split into 2 sections or has it been 1 section and then split

    • @adyf397
      @adyf397 2 года назад +1

      The section from Hessle ( the Humber Bridge is a relatively new section and was probably designated as the A15 because it was the nearest trunk road. The road carrys on to the roundabout at the M180 then, to rejoin the A15 proper, off at the next exit.

    do you know the reason how and why the A15 is split?... starting in Hessle you come over the Humber Bridge heading south and it stops at Barnetby.... then you have to travel West along the M180 towards Scunthorpe for a good few miles, before picking up the A15 again south to Lincoln..... how come it is in 2 sections and miles apart rather than a single continuous road.

    • @jimififul
      @jimififul 2 года назад +3

      Lots of roads were "split" as they were superceded by more major roads and motorways. I often use the A361 in Somerset and Devon. It's technically the longest three digit A road in the UK. In parts around me it disappears into the A38, A39 and M5 for short sections. The original alignment became the B3227 in the 80s when the North Devon Link Road was built. In the case of the A15 I believe the M180 took some of it's alignment, so technically it is the M180 (A15)

    • @adyf397

      The Humber Bridge section of the road was built to serve the bridge from the south. Never an original part at the 15 probably just a convenient number to give it being relatively close

      Now Scampton is shut, they could reopen the old A15 as the Northbound carriageway
