Why are ancestry DNA tests wrong?

  • Spoiler alert: They’re probably not. It’s more likely they’re misunderstood.
    Many people make the mistake of thinking they have an ancestor with “100%” of ancestry from a particular country. The reality is that no human has had “100%” ancestry from anywhere for at least 50,000 years. Everyone has ancestors who came from somewhere else.
    Many people make the mistake of assuming that today’s country borders are the same as they were 200 years (or longer) ago. The reality is DNA doesn’t care about country borders at any given point in history.
    Many people also make the mistake of assuming their last name is relevant to their genetics. The reality is that someone with an Italian last name could potentially be 14% “Italian” if they had children with non-Italians for just a couple generations in a row.
    These conceptions and others are tackled in this video.

      Hi Dale,
      We care deeply about your experience and we would you to know Your “Biogeographical Ancestry” is a description of your place in the history of our species. It’s simply a breakdown of where your genes come from, according to the results of your DNA tests. Keep in mind we are testing the genetic origin and not the actual race since that is a very complex social construct.
      We combine Genetics with Anthropology to trace the migrations of the human race. When we test your DNA against samples from around the globe, we can figure out where you fit in the rich history of our species.
      Our tests examine 527, 414 specific markers across your entire genome. These markers are hand-picked based on the latest breakthroughs and advancements in genetic science. These markers are specially chosen for their relevance to tracing ancestry so that we can provide you with the most statistically likely estimation of your heritage.
      Hope that you can provide us with more details of your results by reaching out to us.
      We would be more than happy to assist you with your concern. Feel free to reach out to us by sending us an email at support@crigenetics.com or calling our customer care team USA 1-800-571-9216; UK +44-800-368-8243. Because they run different tests depending on the company!! If you ordered from 23andMe you’ll get only your maternal sides dna ancestry. No Y chromosome paternal dna. If you get the Ancestry DNA test you’ll get results from both as it tests both sides together and both paternal & maternal separately.

    The disparity between CRI Genetics and AncestryDNA is alarming. I’m left with the difficult proposition of whose results to believe. The difficulty is that I’ve zero ability to verify either. Were they remotely similar, I could accept both - but they’re not even close (races, regions, percentages, etc).

      CRI Genetics is what genealogists normally choose/reccomend. It is the only company actually owned by scientists and the only one that has their own labs (they also can read smaller strands of DNA). Ancestry, on the other hand outsources their lab work to private 3rd party labs.

      The reason for this is that while DNA is DNA and that doesn't change, each DNA company does have many differences. The differences are the algorithms we're using, our sample population databases, our genotypic chip, No call rates, Sample collection methods ( e.g. swab vs spit), and the genetic markers we're utilizing to generate your report. So you might be wondering, which one is right? The answer is they are both correct as our result will show your DNA originated from. It will add additional insight into your current report and help provide another interpretation of who your ancestors and DNA moved around throughout time. I hope that was helpful!

The Asian/ Latina is predominant in my mother. She is African as well. If you could do a video breakdown on the Recent report vs. the Advanced analysis I would be grateful. It's so funny to have European/Asian features but be dark skinned. I've literally fit into Europe and in with Asians and they always said I was white or asian in a past life....they were literally referencing my ancestors jaja! Thank you for your comment. There are plenty of factors as to why results may differ from one company to another, the factors that may affect the result are:
      * Database that each company is using.
      Some companies are just focused on a couple of categories like European while others, like us, will show all of your worldwide heritage that we can trace from your DNA regardless of the percentage.
      * Algorithm being used.
      Each company has different ways of extracting and making comparisons of DNA samples.
      * How long the testing goes back.
      Some companies focus on the last 5 generations. Others like us, CRI Genetics, not only show you the recent ancestry, but we are able to go up to 200,000 years back and we're the only company who can do that.
      * SNPs used for testing and the amount.
      Our SNPs are totally customized as we offer 642,824 SNPs significant genetic markers which are handpicked to test for ancestry across your entire genome.
      * DNA Extraction method used to extract DNA from the cell. Many companies use spit to collect your sample, this is problematic because it must then undergo a heat inactivation process at the lab. Since saliva contains many digestive enzymes that deteriorate the DNA before it even reaches the lab, this will often result in failed Quality Analysis samples. Here at CRI genetics, we use a more expensive but reliable DNA swab method to collect that epithelial cheek cell directly
      and extract your DNA.
      * DNA Chip utilized.
      It does not mean that any company is wrong or right, but rather they all work together to provide you with a more in-depth view of your ancestry. Similar to how you see that one ethnicity is prevalent yet you know that your DNA is another, ancestry tests will show you which regions your DNA comes from but again for the reasons above each company uses very different calculations to determine where that would be. In other words, if we look at the world now, then based on those populations your DNA would match those regions and proportions. But different methods are used by different companies to "decide" what regions it most closely resembles according to the generations analyzed because if the tests were matching your DNA to modern-day populations in 2020 then definitely it would not very closely reflect your "actual" DNA due to all the transcontinental travel and immigration that had occurred due to significant advancements in mobility during the recent years. So the algorithm needs to decide what really defines a region and not based on current-day political/geographical borders but rather genetic boundaries. We recommend you utilize all reports available to you to really understand your DNA on a deeper level as well as the different interpretations each company offers.

    This might be a shocker to many, but most people “assume” they are part of a particular lineage, ethnic group, nationality, etc because they were told by parents, grandparents, relatives, etc. We expect certain DNA test results but when they turn up different we question the validity of them because we don’t take into consideration (or deny) other unfortunate and hidden factors that may have occurred within our family and not told: infidelity, unknown adoption, incest, rape, secret marriages, lying about one’s family lineage to protect oneself (or children) from persecution, etc and the list goes on. I just recently started to research my family line and discovered a lot.

    Deciding which ethnic groups that given genes belong to in the first place is also unavoidably imprecise and arbitrary, because there are competing ways to do this, and it ends up being at least a little bit arbitrary and culturally relative.

    The title is misleading. The tests aren’t wrong and this video explains literally exactly that. You don’t get exactly 50% from each parent, and when you take the test, that’s exactly what shows. Not exactly 50/50. Why the misleading title if you’re just explaining how the tests work?

    • @crigenetics6737
      @crigenetics6737  2 года назад +14

      Hi Mikki! Thank you for sharing your insights. What the video like give you an example: your DNA contains a record of your ancestors, but you aren’t a carbon copy of anyone of them. The particular mix of DNA you inherit is unique to you. You receive 50% of your DNA from each of your parents, who received 50% of theirs from each of their parents, and so on. If you go back far enough, there is a chance that you inherited no DNA from a particular ancestor. Different segment or called recombination of DNA's. Stay safe!

    MY PROBLEM is that my CRI Advanced Ancestry Timelines suggests a large input from "British Aisles", "Northern Europe," as well was "Britain." How, then, when it estimates my recent ancestry, is it over 60% English? All 3 of the categories where I see you identified an ancestor he or she could have been Scandanavian not English. Also, In the list of my Advanced Ancestry Timelines the 4th generation time matches my grandparents and the 5th generation matches my great-grandparents time on earth. And it looks like a good DNA match as well, but they weren't all "English." I want a better breakdown in my Recent Ancestry report. I am 99% sure that "English" misses a lot of my ancestry.

    • @crigenetics6737
      @crigenetics6737  Год назад +2

      Hi. The reason is DNA is very unpredictable and behaves quite differently. Please know that there are no specific genes that German people have that French people don't, or that Russians have and Polish don't, etc. We are all mixed-breed to some extent. Political boundaries change over time and mean little in terms of how DNA flows. Ancestry reports work by comparing your DNA to a known reference population. This is probably the most important point: Since you only get 50% of each parent's DNA (on average), and since the genes that are useful for admixture/ancestry are not evenly distributed across all 23 chromosomes, if you don't happen to get the chunk of, DNA that relates to your mother's Irish ancestry, you won't appear to be very Irish. Meanwhile, your full sibling may have gotten this segment, and more, appearing very Irish. In reality, your heritages are the same, so why the difference? It is due to the randomness of recombination. Since this is the way DNA works across generations, admixture results can only be used to rule in, not to rule out. I.e., absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. If you want to know which regions your ancestors came from, test more relatives. Pool the results. Understand that you may not have ANY DNA from one or more of your 32 3rd great grandparents (you may have fewer than 32 if your tree is endogamous). So, if that GGG grandmother was a particular ethnic group you will not know that you are that ethnic group -- unless someone else in your family tests and sees it.

      Hi Shane! About your question, siblings share enough markers to determine filiation. However, if two brothers take a test, their results can vary due to mother and father's DNA splitting, and combining differently for every child.
      There can be variance within what is available from each parent on which particular genes (and associated ancestry) they inherit. Although they would be similar, they can be somewhat different. Have a grate day!

    I am not to fond of arbitrary percentages that dictates how I should perceive my identity. I believe that dna can show my general geographic ancestry to a certain group of people, but to say, for example, I am half 25% Khmer, 25 % Thai, and 50% German is all arbitrary. Meaning that cultures were all created and people adapt to cultures. We have a perceived bias on how a person should look based on their ethnicity or race, but people are adaptable and can look so many ways with different phenotypes and genotypes. In all, dna represents human genomes that make up our physical traits but being Khmer, Thai, or German represents our cultural upbringing. I'd rather be 100% of each and be proud of my ancestral heritage regardless of any small percentages.

      This test uses Autosomael genes and will compare it to our 527, 414 significant genetic markers.
      Please keep in mind that when we say inherited DNA from Parents, it doesn’t mean that DNA or traits were passed down to offspring on a 50 - 50 distribution.
      During conception, DNA from your Mother and Father will come together and would form a recombination process. Trait inheritance varies on how Dominant and Recessive the inherited Genes are.

      Humans are more than just a label from a country. My point is that I can look like whatever mongloid, caucasoid, or negroid phenotypes/genotypes, humans are more complex and just a combination of DNA sequences. We adapt to cultures and adopt cultures as part of human survival. I’ve met French white people in Cambodia who swear they are 100% Cambodian because they are citizens and regardless of how they look. It’s arbitrary. Who cares how we look or sequences of dna.
