Love it Rob. Really happy to see you do this. Would love to learn from you like this. It is sad that knowledge is hidden and not shared sometimes by experts or shared with insufficient context and detail. It would be amazing to have a series of videos to hear how various things can be mixed/matched to help us grow these plants especially as they get more and more expensive. Looking forward to more of these videos.
Additionally, Rob it would be great if you make a book with your experiences. It would be a great reference.
Our plants are getting less and less expensive LOL! But seriously thank you very much for the feedback. Unfortunately I’m travelling for a month but when I get back we will definitely be concentrating on putting out a number of videos to try and help people. We don’t believe in keeping secrets regarding cultivation.
Hopefully by the time I finish the videos there won’t be anything more to do to put it on paper other than pull information together into a book and maybe filter some of my waffle out.

Thanks for doing these M. Cantley, I've been following you work for many years now and own quite a few of your Nepenthes clones and hybrids. Looking forward to learn more from you. I have a question about substrates (perhaps a more "advanced" one) : What do you think of mineral mixes for growers in temperate regions, like using combinations of kanuma, coarse silica sand and small rockwool growcubes?
Great video! I’d be interested to see a video on pests/ diseases and how you treat/ avoid them.
That’s a big topic that I didn’t specifically mention but requires a series of videos I think. Probably dealing with insects, fungal diseases, and whether or not roots and leaves et cetera are affected. You could write a book!
That probably warrants a series of videos on insect pests, fungal diseases, various treatments and preventions et cetera.

I would love more information about how exactly you dose and apply magnesium to the plants? Do you just use epsom salt? Do you put it in the pitchers or in the potting media? Great video!
I’ll be giving a lot more detail shortly but we actually use it in the fertiliser mix.
We are doing experiments with adding Epsom salts as well as/instead of the fertiliser itself.
Will post more when we have results.

hi mugen moss, hope you don't mind me chiming in on your question. I am still a nepenthes novice myself but seeing this video really makes me want to try one day. Seeing Rob's collection is inspiring to say the least. The reason I am chiming in here is because once one has the humidity, temperature and light levels dialed in which don't take too much experience to figure out the hardest thing and what sets different care apart is the fertilizing regime between different growers and it is something I am most curious about myself to hear from Rob too. I just want to point out here even though I am a novice, I have been researching fertilzing for years to figure out how to improve my care with the plants I do grow as many others I'm sure. The internet is not a good place to learn, well it is and it isn't. But I'd love to hear from Rob himself because the best places to learn is from people that have a great growing collection and Rob's plants look fantastic. So the one thing I will chime in here is simply that small and large plants in nature grow in the same environments.
Just like small fish and big fish live in the same ocean, there is no difference in what a small fish or a big fish needs. To me there is no difference in the concentration of fertilizer a small plant or a big plant need since they all grow on the same planet we live on, get the same tye of rain and the same detriutus runoff than any other plant living around them. This is where learning from the internet can be more confusing than helpful sometimes and I know how hard it can be. Really looking forward to learning more from Rob, and glad I stumbled across this video. Thank you so much Rob. I am also camera shy and more of a plant person than people person.
@@tomfurmby88well the small plant needs a lighter fertilizer concentration as its roots and leaves are more vulnerable. The smalm fish will eat smaller stuff than the bigger fish. Its the same stuff perhaps but different dosis.
@@HyeonsikLi No this is wrong. This is exactly why I mentioned it. Because online you will tend to learn the wrong thing. Of course you are more than welcome to do it wrong. Many people do. But I have 40 years experience growing some of the smallest varieties. I've also grown 1.5m tall cucumer plants and all between. What people keeep getting wrong and exatly why I mentioned it is because the amount of fertilizer is completely different to the concentration of fertilizer. To become a good gardener it really helps to understand the difference. It's really not as hard as you have been made to believe. As long as you can understand the difference between the "amount" of fertilizer and the concentration then you will be able to grow any plant really well. Otherwise you will struggle with the small ones and eventually they will get too weak

Give them time! I looked a lot different when I started growing them, one can grow grey waiting for the best results.

That’s true enough. For Nepenthes as well as orchids and some other plants other key ingredients is time and patience…
Any idea on the application rate for Epsom salts ?
It’s not something we use routinely but we are doing trials with it. I’ll get to that in more detail once the results are known.
