This is the only car I've bought new and this is the reason why! The only manufacturer actually putting engineering effort in their cars to make it more driver oriented and lighter at the same time. More of Dave Coleman please! And I love it. There's nothing like it.
Absolutely love his unfiltered comments and the way he went about the video. Parts on the floor, clanging parts, unscripted lines, an enthusiast who's an engineer, and the random comments which must have had the marketing department squirming. It doesn't get better!
Pretty casual and informal content for any large corporation, let alone a car company. A breath of fresh air. This philosophy only helps make the MX-5 more approachable.
Man I love Coleman! the king of Sport Compact Car who finally got his dream job with Mazda! really interesting things they've done, I like the 1:1 6th gear with a tall rear end concept, I've never seen that before, some very cool weight savings too, great analysis! Project 510 for life Dave! )
Read his articles when he was still a journalist for SportCompactCar magazine. Got hooked on cars ever since! I remember a piece he wrote about side port exhaust on rotary engines..
I recently got a mint n/c and couldnt b happier. This is one of the most interesting pieces Ive seen about the MX5-and Ive seen a lot of them now as you can imagine lol
No idea how RUclips autoplay took me here but I'm just having a chill Saturday evening with Miata facts playing in the background. We have peak comfy, gentlemen.
Very good vid!! I dream of a 3.0 liter 60 degree V6, 232 HP. Shorter engine, mass lower and further back. 60 degree V6s are silky smooth, like an in-line 6. That would be the bell housing that is so smooth I think, long to move the transmission back closer to the driver and shift mass to the rear, aiding weight balance.
Very, very well presented. Only thing that always bothers me about the Miata skateboard is the fact the front and rear sections are held together by nothing more than a long slim 'ladder'. I assume much of the car's rigidity must be achieved by the mono body once attached but for a sports car, that underlying structure doesn't appear that great to me?
Given the many complaints about faulty ND gearboxes, I wonder if the balance between light weight and quality is ok. To my opinion the ND should be equipped with a better and mayby somewhat heavier more durable gearbox. My ND 2023 G184 gets a gearbox swap, and I am not the only one. Under full Mazda warranty, but nevertheless highly unwanted. .
This video basically shows an evolution of the NC platform. What about the chassis rigidity, considering a lot of steel parts have been replaced with aluminium.
How am I just seeing this now?! Still bought my nd before seeing this by I knew most of these juicy details already but still.. geek mode! And btw Mazda is only able to do this if you buy one! You can keep it 20 years just buy one.
I thought the same thing. Mine (1.5 here) is still fine after 73000 KM's, just bought it pre-owned (all new cars are insanely expensive in my country) and will have the transmission oil changed soon. Now I've been stick-shifting all my life and just perhaps it's a bit of an American thing to have transmission issues on these. Never heard or read anything about it here, and I'm an MX-5 club member.
@@rustinpieces there's definitely failures all over the world as I used to keep track of them. Other countries tend to not match the US in driving enthusiasm or tracking them in racetracks. The internals of the transmission are known.
@@blurayffan66 it does unfortunately. "V5 ND1 transmission" is the same as the ND2. Only difference is the front cover which accomodates the DMF the ND2 uses. This is well documented by Mazda fyi. Not sure why people still don't know this 4 years later. Failures are lower, but certainly not close to zero on yearly basis.
Interesting. A lot of track enthusiasts insist on eliminating the body roll but that seeam like you really screw up all the work that went into the suspension design.
More engineers less marketeers, always +1
This video sold me my mx5
we need more of this technical analysis!!

Loved the tupperware comment....great review.
Got one of these fantastic cars a few months ago. It deserves a better driver lol

Just got a 2019 nd.... no complaints, just pure fun!
2 seconds in and Im already excited!! what a great car, can't wait to acquire my own.
I'm really glad you're sharing all this information - it is very interesting, informative and makes me want the new MX5 even more.
Five of the new miatas drove past my house the other day. Clean af

Totally agree. Coleman was a must read with SCC back in the hey day.
Excellent informal video, I'll take something like this over an auto show person reading the spec sheet any day.
Great video! Watching this helped "seal the deal" for me and I made the purchase the next day!
This is very informative and makes me want to buy the new ND!
Great video. Bring us more with Dave Coleman, please.
This fella is great!
Love the technical review M! And as always, excellent episode!
Read his articles when he was still a journalist for SportCompactCar magazine. Got hooked on cars ever since!
I remember a piece he wrote about side port exhaust on rotary engines..
what a fantastic video. I love learning more about my new to me 2016 miata
Great video by real engineer!
I have nd miata rf.
Love it. Also appreciate how well it's been designed 🎉
I recently got a mint n/c and couldnt b happier. This is one of the most interesting pieces Ive seen about the MX5-and Ive seen a lot of them now as you can imagine lol
Excellent technical review. Great video!
Thanks for making the recent technical videos. Keep them coming.
Always loved Technobabble, have Dave on more!
what an awesome guy to present , good work and nice presentation

I have a NC 2006, I cannot believe how well this car turns, 40 mph into a 90degree no problem,
I wish we could have something like this for every car
MOAR COLEMAN!
Im still loving mine..
Great video! So informative.
Love the detailed technical information from this video; this is the kind of stuff that I come to this channel for that you can't get anywhere else!
Absolutely LOVE my 30AE 🍊 Well done Mazda for the engineering on this car. LEGENDS! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
wow this guys made it. I remember reading him on sport compact cars lol
Awesome design all over, but what happened to remote window controls to close the windows?? :)
5:00 too bad those transmissions are blowing out. Hope they find a fix soon.
9 dec 2019 11:20 am est:thanks
How difficult is it switch to old style non-power steering in this car? Is there any real difference to be felt from doing it?

I thought the same, I am sure it looks more fragile than it actually is
Great stuff, thanks!
Good video.. thanks
Great video!!!
great stuff
great video thanks for that
More stripped back in-depth technical info please👍

Just got my 2021 gt and am in love. I’m going to mourn the day the Miata gets killed off.
What do you think Miata vs Lotus Elise?
MORE COLEMAN FOR THE NEW MAZDAS :D
Awesome vid
More tech reviews!
I wish they kept using the NC gearbox :")
same engine as manual cx5 too, its just tuned for more hp here
This video basically shows an evolution of the NC platform. What about the chassis rigidity, considering a lot of steel parts have been replaced with aluminium.
Can't say I agree with the steering feel, rear stability and a few other statements vs the NC
Love this. $30k halo car… Mazda fan for life.
I like this guy.
Just got a grand touring edition. Drove geeman cars last 20yrs. This is way nore fun.
How am I just seeing this now?! Still bought my nd before seeing this by I knew most of these juicy details already but still.. geek mode! And btw Mazda is only able to do this if you buy one! You can keep it 20 years just buy one.
Man, this didn't age well with the transmission issues the ND has. I'm surprised we aren't at the 6th revision of it to stop them from blowing up.

The latest ND2 does not have these issues

i wish my 6'7" frame would fit in this Miata. Heck, any Miata.
nice man!
I would've preferred the 1.5L
Someone needs to send this to jaGuar...
They “had a perfectly good NC transmission”, which didn’t fail. Yet they replaced it with a new one that failed in 2nd gear ;)
Umm early ND gearbox's had issues.
Interesting. A lot of track enthusiasts insist on eliminating the body roll but that seeam like you really screw up all the work that went into the suspension design.
love miatas but hate the the front end! and im talking about THIS show peace front end ^^
I fear the day when cars become all electric. Will this engineering become a past art? Does anyone else worry about this?
"last longer on race track" yes I hope so there is no warranty if we use it on track. (y)
we dont have the budget for a happy girl killed me
All car drive trains look so Dr. Seuss ridiculous lolol
Would be a sight if they welded a seat and drove the car like that. I wonder what that would feel like
Weight Reduction yo
omg can someone say highly tune-able. and 3.9 diff
Still waiting for some crazy person to completely disassembled the engine of one of these just for fun.
How I can get David Coleman email address
Take a shot at every “Uh.”
Why have there been so many transmission failures?
Can I translate your video to Ukrainian and upload to my small channel? I'll leave all links to your channel and this video.
All that work and couldn’t make a normal size adult fit?
Josh Jacquot disliked this video cause jealous.
This chap has not done ANYTHING for the engineering of the car - so why is he talking abouty WE all the time???
