I remember most budgies had penguin toys when I was a kid in the 60’s and 70’s. They were just a single penguin though who would stand up and if it was tilted over (by the bird)it stood up again by itself. It had a heavy ball or something in the bottom. Many people buy birds on impulse and don’t have a clue how much time, money, and energy is needed to care for them on a daily basis. Birds are as messy and destructive as puppies-something irresponsible breeders and retailers often won’t explain to customers. And unlike puppies, birds continue this behavior for 15 to 75 years. Additionally, birds can be extremely loud and demanding and sometimes severely bite their caretakers. Because most customers aren’t prepared for an animal companion who is as curious, needy, and demanding as a 2-year-old child, countless birds spend their entire lives trapped inside a cage that’s too small in the corner of a living room, basement, or garage, unable to use or stretch their wings and deprived of the vital companionship of other birds. Like dogs on chains, caged birds crave freedom and companionship, not the cruel reality of forced solitary confinement for the rest of their very long lives. Driven mad from boredom and loneliness, caged birds often become aggressive, neurotic, and self-destructive. The Truth About Bird Suppliers Just as there are puppy mills, there are now enormous bird factories where breeders warehouse thousands of parrots and other exotic birds and remove their offspring in order to sell them to pet stores. These birds are frequently confined to dirty, dimly lit cages, where they are unable to fully stretch their wings. There is no federal legislation to protect birds in the pet trade, and successful prosecution of cruel or negligent bird breeders is unlikely under most state anti-cruelty laws. A parrot-breeding operation in Washington state-which a veterinarian described as a “concentration camp” and where, according to news sources, birds “lived in cold, wet, filthy conditions for years”-remains open and continues to raise birds for the pet trade. The same lack of caring has been reported at breeding facilities across the country. Carol Wade i keep budgie, lovebirds, ringnecks and finches and they are all in the house, now very rare down in Aussie do you have rescue places that have them, even England you never see them in rescue places, you condemn all et shops which is just not true, in Aussie all pets shops have a law, where any animals especially birds once they come into the shop must be on quarantine period for at least 7 to 10 days in case of illness within the birds the same goes for England where my relatives live, that is by law, so please to do not condemn all bird and pet shops, do more research, also you say and tell people to build backyard sanctuaries yet you neglect to mention that not all countries is that a good idea for bird, that's fine if you live in my Aussie country or certain parts of America where its always warm, but how about England or Scotland or colder countries, if you were to do that in england you would be killing those birds, in winer its too cold to keep them even in enclosed areas outside, also think about things before you say that one not everyone has a massive backyard to keep them like that, two in certain countries you would need permiision or a permit to have a santuray in yoru backgarden, so your saying only people with huge gardens and their own houses should keep them, when you rent any prooerty you need permission to build anything like that, in aussie we need permits in certain areas to build areas outside for birds, they have no problems of living indoors and its warmer and safer for them, so before you start saying that think about things first, yes they need attention, yes they need to be free from a cage most of the time, but think before telling people to get them from rescue sites and backyard areas to keep them, not everyone can do that, my birds are always happy, free to roam the house and we both work but they also love there private time together same as humans do, maybe where you live its fine to have backyard cages but not in every country
