    Work on your sources. In medieval Germany, abbys brew beer openly, "Dünnbier", which had 2% alcohol. This beer was part of their "allowance" the list of stuff they get from the cloister. Same list that regulated the amount of shoes, clothing, other food. There are lot of very old catholic breweries here. Nothhing secret at all.
