- Gael Monfils and Felix Auger-Aliassime angered one another during their Laver Cup clash in Canada on Friday night. The latter made light work of his opponent, winning their singles match in straight sets to continue Team World's red-hot start at the tournament.

The most entertaining and surreal thing about this is watching Johnny Mac keep his composure during the whole exchange.
He’s 70, it comes with age. Been there done that! Besides much of it was Felix and Gael speaking in French.
Johny Mac doesn't know French luckily 😂😂
Bro is like Kreese from Cobra Kai
The exchange was mostly in French. McEnroe didn't understand a word 🙂
@@twittertwicehe's 65
McEnroe be like "I wish I could be part of this argument but goddamn I don’t speak French! 😡"
😂😂
😂😂😂😂
My thots exactly…goddam Johnny Mac must b thinking how do I say “are you serious” in francais
Sheltons face watching the argument. 😂 Frances was just laughing.
Yep lol. Sometimes all you can do is laugh. I love how both sides defused it by telling each player to focus and not look or talk to the other. They can hash it out in the locker room later.
FAA taking things a bit too serious. Gael always plays to the crowd even during slams. He needs to lighten up a bit. @@sportsview247
Right ; Shelton & Frances 😊
Francis is always smiling. This guy is probably the life of any party he goes to. Seems like a super nice guy.
Tennis needs personalities like Shelton
As a french speaker who understood the whole exchange...they were both right. An honest misunderstanding...I don't think Gael and Felix were briefed the same way about the event.
Agreed but at the same time Gael should know this is still a competition and teams wanna win...I can't imagine he's never seen the Laver Cup before...
@@FiggyStardustOr seen the matches preceding his.
I disagree. I do not think Gael is as sophisticated as people assume. I think he misunderstood, that while Laver is relaxed, meaning Team members can be supportive, it does not mean when on court you do not have to comport yourself in a serious manner. As Felix told him, this is NOT an exhibtion match. Why would who talk to Felix tell him different than they told every other participant. This is about what Gael heard, not what was said?.
Ok, so if understand correctly, was it that Monfils gave the impression he wasn't trying hard, or just clowning all around?? I did see Monfils try one of those trick serves, which I thought was kind of odd. But I didn't see the match, it was something he did while I happened to surf the channel. But I wouldn't be surprised, Monfils problem is that he often doesn't take matches seriously enough for him to care much about its outcome. But still, it's like he should know that even though it's not a ATP tournament, one is still expected to treat it as a competition.
Clownfils is an exhibitionist.
Why would he not treat the Laver Cup like it was an exhibition?
McEnroe just stood arms folded just doesn't give a fuck what a legend
well the whole team combine got 0 gs title, John got 7
John wants more of this at the top level, gives tennis excitement
This proves that back in his prime McEnroe was ready for all the smoke
He has no idea what they're saying
@jc-vu4gn - 7 is good. But nowhere near the greats like: Novak, Nadal, and Federer. Those are the G.O.A.T.S.
This is what you get when an event is not clear on what it wants to be. The absence of the top 10 players from Europe shows that the prestige factor is low. Outside of those players, line ups where leaning towards more ‘entertainment’ also in early editions (Sock being there). Monfils recognizes that if prestige was the main thing he would not be invited.
Even the umpire was not clear on whether he should rule in a competitive or entertainment manner.
Early days
1:17 - can someone please smack Shelton?
LOL....
Gael and Felix should make it into a friendly rivalry, fans of both guys
It isnt rivalry. Monfils did not understand that he couldnt do his silly crap at Laver Cup. He misunderstood the words fun and relaxed to mean full on exhibition behavior and it did not.
This is surprising because they're two of the nicer and more likeable guys on tour. But shit does happen sometimes.
'I can play games too' lol Felix with the French too. Canadians are nice people.
In 2023 it seems he can't though ;)
We Canucks take fair play seriously.
We certainly do, eh!
FAA: I can play games too!
Monfils: Kid i'm just trying to relax and enjoy the match!
Monfils: Nobody told me this is a serious competition to be lost or won in three days? you believe that?
Francis in the back smiling bot knowing if they're actually beefing or not 😭
No, he knew. He was smiling bc Felix took their advice and said something to the ref…. all of that was in English!
@@twittertwice right but FAA didn't seem happy during the convos with monfils
In fact FAA take it so seriously and Monfils not enough because people said him, join this tourment it's cool you are free.
Tell me who else on either team have you seen that acted like Gael? No one. They tell everyone they same thing. Gael misunderstood what was said! its obvious!
The organizer should make this clear. Is the Laver Cup an exhibition friendly tournament or is it a regular tournament like any other ATP ones. Yes, there are still rules and regulations, but if you are telling people it is an exhibition tournament, don't blame the players for not taking it seriously.
It's not supposed to be an exhibition, you are expected to treat it as a competition. I don't even follow the laver cup, but even I know that much😂 so Monfils maybe didn't get the meaning in the translation. Next time they need to also state the purpose in French ha ha
@@creativestudio101 No ATP points, players invited not on their results (FAA would not be there otherwise), nah this is definitely an exhibition. Gaël just comes from UTS, he thought the whole US North American tour ends up by a big exhibition as the north American business knows how to do ;)
You could tell the chair umpire was pretty loose until FAA got serious and asked him what rules are we playing under.
@@iansmirna5183 hmmm... I could be wrong, but from all the marketing and from Federer's own remarks, I understood it was supposed to be a serious competitive affair, regardless it not being a standard ATP event
@@creativestudio101 As you said, marketing wise they don't want to sell it as an exhibition. In the facts, how do you call a tournament where people enter on invitation against big cash and despite disastrous results for some of them, where no ATP points are allowed and where top ranked players prefer to not go?
Shelton is so toxic. He doesn't even know Monfils and accuses him of playing games. You can clearly see he wasn't. He thought it was an exhibition. And let's be honest, it is. They don't get points and don't even have their coaches. Why do you think the Top Euro men opted to skip?
Shelton? What did he do? Felix was involved with Monfils and mentioned playing games, not Shelton.
@@positivelastaction3957 listen towards the end, he's talking to FAA. You can tell FAA was feeling bad because he saw Monfils' reaction but Shelton is in his ear fueling him with presumptions about Monfils.
He may be a future great player but 'to cocky'.
@@joking2512 I did not catch that. Yeah, Shelton is pretty immature. He's talented so hopefully as he gets older, he'll wise up a bit.
I always thought it was an exhibition too!
I feel for Monfils, he really though it waa exhibition, that's his 1stvtime playing at LC!😊 FAA made too big of a deal! And what does Shelton knows about it? He is here 1st time too, gotta have some respect for an older player
Wrong here. Why has nobody taken same tact as Gael. Be cause Gael misinterpreted what was said. He misconstruted, relaxed and have fun. Ben Shelton was in it because Gael used his strong responses while playing to mean the same as Gael going to sit in the crowd. It doesn’t but Gael brought Ben into it, so Ben spoke up.
Shelton needs to grow up and stop the college mentality.

watch Shelton trying to instigate and enflame instead of resolve. He's really become a punk. He wasn't like this in the Challengers. He's too immature to be in Lavar Cup.
He's still a kid calm down dad.
Telling felix to stick to his business is instigating? To ignore him? To not look at him? Calm down clown
He needs to shut up and respect the veteran players.
He was actually giving Felix good advice to just ignore the stuff Gael was doing and focus on his game
he doesn't know french, if it was anybody else that don't know what FAA or monfils were saying, I'll tell him to just ignore him too.
you guys need to give some of these young guns some air.. jesus. just sit back and watch the fireworks
37 years old beefing with a 23 year old.......... embarrassing
FAA was under pressure to win front of home crowed and reacted poorly to something that was done by a player whom is loved by all on the tour for being a great entertainer and funny guy. It created unneccery tension.
Don't be fooled by Monfils, he's a great entertainer but also plays massive head games.
Another dude that didn't watch the game and commenting

How dare him to call exhibition tournament an exsibition tournament?
A Tournament where you exhibit your skill with a winner and loser at the end of three days. Call it what you will. Have your s__t together on the court.
Here's what happened. Monfils wanted to have fun and play some tennis. Felix got all serious thinking the event was by the book. Monfils being diplomatic said I'm sorry I hurt you, next time I stay home and watch old Burhami videos when having fun playing tennis was allowed and encouraged
He asked the ref it was by the book or an exhibition. If the ref would have said it's an exhibition then he would have been fine with it. The ref says they are using ATP rules, but that's obviously BS, so why not make it clear what this is?
Bull. Show me the last four years where anyone playing went and sat in the crowd or made his opponent wait while he talked to the crowd? All anyone has to do is understand Roger put Laver together… Roger does not behave like Monfils and would never want any participant to act like that. You are trying to say Felix doesnt have a sense of humor. yet we saw it playing with Ben. Monfils is a good guy, but his idea of what was acceptable is skewed in this instance. Did you see Caspers face when he did that Monfils high jump to hit a ball. No one likes that in the middle of playing a game.
Shelton: note it, note it, that's how I gonna do against Djoker next time
Tiafore: just chill bro
Watch Ben Shelton gives a great pep talk to Felix after the exchange at the end of the video. Impressive young man with lots of team tennis experience in collegiate tennis.
Team Europe loves celebrating and winning the Laver Cup almost every year.... but when Team World starts winning suddenly they are "taking it too seriously" 😂

Thats like saying Novak wasn't the big favorite and likely to win the last year's AO and USO because of some stupid mandate , look at this year what he did . He won both without much difficulty , saying if , if , if is stupid in that context . That would be the same if you banned Nadal at the FO .
If you look all the way back from Wimbledon 2003 when Federer won his first slam , only 3 players outside of Europe won 3 slams in the last 20.5 years , 81 grand slams held ( 2020 Wimbledon was canceled due to Covid ) . Didn’t sound like the umpire knew 100% how to answer Felix. Wth. Do they adhere to ATP tour rules or not?
Funny how Johnny Mac didn’t get involved. Maybe he liked the player confrontation drama.
FYI FAA it’s not that serious relax bro! Gael is a legend and should be treated as such. If he is there to have fun please let him have fun. 😂
So basically just a misinterpratation of the rules over the time limit by the umpire. Completely avoidable and unnecessary, both players are right.
Monfils was told it was a friendly competition that he could yake his time, since he doesnt have the pipes as b4.
FAA asked the umpire if it was like an atp match or an exhibition, umpire yells him iys the same rules as an atp match, so then a 25 second time limit on serve...
Laver Cup is a bit of a farce that the players contributed to with their (childish) antics. Tennis should focus on the Davis Cup and ditch the Laver Cup which means very little.
What 'war' of words are we witnessing. It seemed like a very pleasant conversation 😅
Is it Europe vs World or North Africa vs South Africa?
This is what happens when the players think they're bigger than tennis..Team Félix
And Whatta ya know they are playing again today in Doubles. 😅 This should be FUN.😊🎉
Lol maybe Felix should be more concerned with winning matches than trying to police his opponent's behavior. Dude's 2023 season has been a joke
This is why despite his incredible physical talent, FAA can’t get to the top, he gets distracted way too easily, even in a friendly exhibition
Thank you!
Felix who never says anything gets too distracted? Felix who was in the top 10 for however long. The diference between #6 and number #1 is not one annoyance a year as comoared ejth medvedev, rublev or tsitsipas who complain far more. This comment makes zero sense.
Johnny McEnroe just watched em talk it out as he touched his chin 🤣🤣

definitely monfils trying to get into FAa's head a little bit there
This is Vancouver....if a hockey fight breaks out ...no problem

if he asks for trouble, the blue team has Rublev
Felix should be more worried about actually playing well.
Monfils behaved like an idiot. He pretended to play like exhibition match and have fun bc he knew he would lose anyway so he had some excuses to keep his face in front of players and audience. None of players have played Laver cup as exhibition matches.
I agree. The previous players of Laver have never thought of it as an exhibition.
So this is what an implosion looks like.
Funniest thing is McEnroe standing there saying nothing. He used to love controversy!
Wow, this time World Team shows lots of class. Bravo Felix! Bravo Ben! Bravo all team!! Young and wise and cold blood professionals at work!🤩
Maybe it's just me, from browsing the comments... but is it possible Felix is taking it just a bit too serious here? Like he has something to prove? Or maybe compensating for other poor showings in matches that actually matter?
The rest of his team look very disinterested in the conversation, and rather relaxed. Not saying Monfils should run ragged, but come on.
Whether it's an exhibition or not, the goal of these Cups is for the guys to have FUN, WHILE competing. Nothing I've seen on Tour suggests FAA knows how to do that... which can explain his results. Too tight all the time.
Simply a mistake from Laver Cup to invite Monfils. From a sport pov he cannot compete (anymore), his clown behavior does not belong to Laver Cup. Go play an exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
In hindsight I agree. And Whatta ya know he's playing again today in Doubles!! And who is on the other Doubles team? None other than Felix Auger-Aliassime. 😅 this should be FUN.
If Felix plays with this anger and intensity in tournaments that count ATP points he might get back into the top 10. Where was this intensity when he played Nadal for high stakes and his coach, uncle Tony decided to skip the match?
Felix needs to relax.
The coaching in laver cup is way overboard. Tennis is not a sport where you have ppl around you telling you what to do. I mean it’s ok for a quick pointer, but this coaching seems over the top
What a shame...u dont see this in badminton, squash or other sports.
What a sham of an event.
See Ben’s reaction…hahahahah😂
The World team is taking this way too seriously. The Laver cup doesn't mean anything. It's just a money-making event. Most of the big guns of tennis are not even there. I'm from Montreal and I'll say this to Felix: "Relaxe, Filou".
yeesh, what a horrible mindset. Obviously they werent on the same page but imo tennis is most fun when both players are taking it seriously
That kind of thinking is what started that nonsense. Monfils wasn't taking it serious at all. Rod Laver & Roger Federer were siting there. At least play well for them. Then Monfils lost the match and put Europe behind 0-3.
The players always taken it seriously, while having fun of course. This clowning was too much.

Stress reliever 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
We love you Ben but relax my friend.
I worry about the future of the Laver cup. It was basically a money making enterprise for Roger Federer, with a confused format that has been underlined with this situation - it seems more like team tennis in the 70s than the regular tour. The line up this year has also been very second rate.
Yeah the big 3 did a lot of work to endorse the Laver Cup. In 2017 it was Federer and Nadal insisting that everyone take it seriously and all, and top players showed up for the opportunity to play on their team. Also Jack Sock and Nick Kyrgios’s impact cannot be understated; they took this competition extremely seriously and helped set the tone while dominating doubles matches. 2017-2019 was peak Laver Cup.
Now with Federer retired, Nadal and Djokovic getting older and less likely to play this, people just have less of a reason to play. We probably won’t see Alcaraz any time soon unless Federer begs him to come. It’s after the US Open where every top player is exhausted.
It’s a great format, but I think Federer needs to put in effort if he wants to keep the reputation alive. Call up guys like Alcaraz, Kyrgios, Medvedev, and the coaches will do the rest with keeping them serious and on-task. Make sure the culture doesn’t shift. Maybe have retired players show up; big 4 can be near the players or offer coaching, Sock could jump on for doubles.
"I worry about the future of the Laver cup"
I don't worry at all cause I've never cared about team events in tennis.
"It was basically a money making enterprise for Roger Federer"
Right on point!.
Totally disagree. The format was not confused. Monfils was not a good ad on… he showboats and presumed once asked to participate that is why he was asked. These were first rate players. This has been a rough year for tennis players everbody has been injured. The line up will always depend on whos health and wants to play. Could care less if Roger is making money with Tennis. Black Players are not second rate… nor are players in top 20 players. Don’t know who Felix hasnt beaten at least once. These guys are all good players.
Laver Cup is not an exhibition though. It may not be for points but that doesn’t make it an exhibition.
But then again, who in the world watches this event?
