When a boy goes to the monk, they like to have the band on a pick up in the procession to the temple, I've been to several in Chiang Mai and Khampaeng Phet where my wife is from, and every band I've seen has a khaen player, along with the electric guitar, drums, bass and singers.. the cross fusion music they play is amazing, when the khaen sound is distorted, it makes this incredible sort of organ sound, that really drives songs along... love to learn how to play one... not expensive to buy here in Chiang Mai..
It's a fantastic instrument, with an amazing sound. I found a video of an Irish guy playing a jig on the khaen. It adapts perfectly to traditional Irish music.
Legends have it that the Khaen was invented by a Pootai widow more than 900 years ago in northern Laos near Dien Bien Phu. There are many goups of Pootais in Thailand now. One group in Renoonakorn of Nakornpanom, another group in KhaoWong of Kalasin and more.
According to Professor Chistopher Adler, traditional khaen playing is based on five melodic modes, lai noi, lai yai, lai sootsanaen, lai bo sai, and lai soi. With someone like Bia, the future of the khaen is bright.

Reading & writing in Laos in Thailand were prohibited, only in art forms, singing, dancing & musical, but they called it Issan, because Siamese doesn't want Lao people on this side of Mekong river know that they're Laos, or have any connection to main land Laos.

If you seek out some people from the Music College at the University of Maha Sarakham, they can help you get in contact with a good khaen maker.

True because Chiang Mai was founded by Lao that is why they play the khaen.

I like play the khaen lao and the hmong khaen or hmong Qeng too.
