  • This is at Club Clearview in Dallas around '89. This is one of those nights where there are more people working at the club than are there to see you play. This was probably a Wednesday or Thursday night - everyone has to start somewhere. The key is to have fun with it no matter how many people are there. It's Vaden on vocals, Lisa Umbarger on bass, Matt Winchell on drums, Tracy Sauerweign on rhythm guitar, and myself on lead guitar.

    As a 23 year old Native Texan who lives 30 minutes from Possum Kingdom, I'm wishing more people would make music like this, such a shame where the music industry is now. Long live the Toadies!!!!

    Amazing! It sounds way ahead of '89. I read rumors that these riff was before "where's my mind" and not vice versa. Could you shed some light on this mystery?

    • @chm3rd
      @chm3rd  Год назад +4

      Definitely! Surfer Rosa came out as we were forming the band and was a HUGE influence on us. In fact, we wanted a name that didn’t lead anyone to assume what we sounded like and we wanted something simple like “The Pixies” so we came up with our name. The riff to Tyler was definitely influenced too by the Pixies. So they did come first

      @@jordanb3262 - that’s actually me playing guitar in all these videos I’ve posted. Vaden & I started the Toadies in 1988. These videos are all around ‘90 to ‘93 - also playing guitar is Tracy, a girl we used for a while and then we got Darrell Herbert for a while. When I quit the band, Vaden started playing guitar again.

      @@chm3rd Hey thanks for replying, I read the Rubberneck revisited article online and found out about a lot of the lineup changes. The videos I was talking about were the official Tyler, Possum Kingdom and Backslider music videos. Was that Darrel or Clark in those?

      Urban Anime News - that would be Tracey Sauerwein. It got to a point Vaden wanted to focus on only singing so we started looking for a rhythm guitarist. Tracey joined - Vaden liked the idea of two girls in the band. Tracey actually introduced Mark Reznicek to us when we needed a new drummer. We did let her go around 1992 and then sadly she was found dead around 2005.

      ok I thought she looked familiar, she had a band called hairstick right? (I'm from fort worth also) I was in a few bands before I got the Ex-Wife prego lol. I saw you guys around and I used to say "toadies and dead kings pillow are examples of whats wrong in the music biz, unique and talented and will never get signed"
      (this was before grunge got popular) Imagine my pleasant surprise 3 years later when I'm living in ohio and see the possum kingdom vid on MTV lol but sadly dead kings pillow didn't get signed also lol.

      Urban Anime News - you’re right, she was in that band. Always cool to hear from a fellow Ft Worthian! Yeah, we definitely had doubts about us ever being signed. For the longest time, we just had fun jamming and working on songs together, not worrying about record labels.

      I may have been at this show. First time I saw Toadies was at Clearview on a Thursday night during "Dimensions of Dallas" (I think that was what it was called.) Still have their self-released "Velvet" cassette. Later in the 90s I played in Hairstik with Tracey. Our drummer Mike Goodsell posted one of our demos on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/Qe0EjnVdjUc/видео.html @@urbananimenews3947
