Thoughts on partial reps? Do you use them? Do you use them for hypertrophy, building a weak point, working around injury? Or are they a waste of time?

I greatly appreciate the shout-out, Sean. And I totally agree, partials truly have their time and place. They are definitely a tool worth keeping in the tool belt.
I have to say, I'm definitely going to be incorporating those floor DB Skull Crushers. I'd never seen those done off the floor before, and off the floor looks like a great way to do them. I love doing the pull over style Skull Crusher. I've been using a camber bar for mine. I believe I had read about them in Starting Strength by Mark Riptoe (sp?). Great book, even if you are not a beginner you'll still find some great takeaways.
I agree with Spencer, your tri's are JACKED!!! Your thumbnail on this one is Beastmode!

I was happy to be able to shout you out Lucky. I'm looking forward to the weekend when I can watch some more of your videos.
Thumbnails are still a work in progress, but they've come a long way for me.
The tricep rollback on the floor are great, as they get heavy they take a but of getting used to. I like to superset them with the narrow floor presses, the combo drives a ton of blood in around my elbows.
I like doing barbell skull crushers back over the head with a little momentum too, the overload does wonders for tricep strength.

Yeah! Partial reps are a game changer for me!

@@buildingdadbod2.0 I'm going to super set the floor tricipe roll backs then with the floor presses. I'm a super fan of super sets. And I always love trying out new exercises and seeing how they feel.

I love super sets too. A great way to force more volume and more growth.
Let me know what you think about that combo after you give it a try.

The fun thing is you can do partial reps to force more reps, but you can also do partial reps on rack pulls, block presses, or even that tricep exercise you described, you never lock it out which would be a form of partial ROM to keep tension on the triceps.

    • @rrrGeist

@buildingdadbod2.0 yes that triceps exercise is technically a partial however I mostly refer to partials as a part of existing established exercise. Because doing it just by looking at the potential of movement then deadlift is partial because of plates limiting your range of movement. That's why I don't consider that my version of JM press a partial as the whole premise was to do it that way. But sure it is kinda partial. Long story short if more movement turns it into different exercise I don't consider it a partial (like deadlift -> deficit deadlift) . Personally I was thinking of doing first half of deadlifts and presses as my bottom portion of lifts is my weakness despite having smallest triceps in the world.

I understand what you're saying. My deadlift is weakest off the floor too. I did speed deadlifts with a ton of band tension this week, and a few reps I could only get to my knees because the band tension was so great. But I was only worried about the first half of the movement. I was trying to be explosive from the floor to my knees.
I hope ithe partiaks work well for you

Did it delete my comment again ? 😂 sorry if duplicate I’ll try again hmm.
Your tricep thumbnail is ridiculous along with rear delts.
I agree with pretty much everything you said! I would also add personally I don’t put so much weight into the training someone does just because they have a great body part, and i won’t totally disregard some ones ideas just because they don’t have a great body part. We have to accept there are many factors at play and experiment, record, and learn !
I love a tricep isolation exercise with a cable coming from behind , first time I’ve seen you use those that I can remember, would be my personal fav way to isolate.
Good points about Lucky, you can’t argue with his chest development and you know he’s done a lot of “partials” via push ups. A lot of times another group will have figured something out and it’s a no brainer to them, but if we just focus on our own circles hive mind way of thinking and may never discover.
Great workout as always Sean, hope tonight went well !

I 100% agree, everyone should soak up knowledge, play around with different exercises and training methods and find what works best.
That is the first time I tried that incline cable variation, and I loved it. It's going to be part of the rotation moving forward.
I just found Lucky channel because he was commenting on my videos, he's got some good stuff, I'm looking forward to watching more.
I agree it's easy to get closed minded, or dogmatic about certain training modalities, and I think that does people a disservice.
Dynamic day went well, I had a pretty epic fail, no injuries, but you'll get a good laugh.
Kroc rows were at 165 lbs, I may have started weeping around rep 15 and questioning my existence.

Spencer, your paragraph that starts with " I agree with pretty much everything you said! " is super on the money. Over the years I've seen some really strange things when it comes to results different people get from doing the same exercises. I think genetics and individuals bio mechanics, or how their muscles flex throughout a specific exercise make a massive difference in the results they get. I have on a couple of occasions seen guys who's only exercise that they did was push-ups have crazy traps. I'm talking, it would be an insane pump in there traps after they would finish a set of push-ups. It made no sense to me, but I've seen it. For me, I've joked with people that I can fart and grow abs. At the same time, though, I can do other exercises targeting a specific muscle and get extremely minimal results from it. Where other people doing the same exercise would be getting a great pump from it. Which to me is why it's really more of an art than a science, but you have to apply that scientific method to it. Hypothesis, test, observe, analyze, and repeat.

Partial reps are effective for results. I just started back doing 1,000 reps prison style push-ups. Most of my exercises are partial reps (P.R.O.M.) and I gain strength, power, and speed. Heck, you do rack pulls for your deadlift and that's a partial range of motion 😂😂. Same concept, different exercises. There's nothing new under the sun.

    • @buildingdadbod2.0
      @buildingdadbod2.0  День назад +3

I agree There's nothing new under the sun. People just want to attach a name like lengthened partials and then take credit these days. I definitely incorporate partial reps to strengthen weak points or to overload a certain portion of a lift. I also think they are great to force more volume, and to keep tension on a muscle for the entirety of a set. Just another tool to get results, like doing forced reps, or rest pauses to increase volume. High rack pulls and block presses are 2 of my favorite exercises.
