Do floods like this happen regularly in Northern Thailand/ Chiang Mai?

Maybe this is why Thai houses are built on stilts? Maybe?

The last bad one was 2011. It seems to be tied to the El-Ninio cycle which dumps more rain than the drainage system, and Ping River can handle. It then drains down to the middle provinces, and if the Hi-So (high society) Bangkok elite decide to close the flood gates to protect themselves, those poor middle provinces can be flooded for weeks!

The last time we had this kind of flooding was on the 4th of October 2022. We made a neat video of that to archive Chiang Mai history. Same flood zone at the same time of year. Will we ever learn? 😀

This is bad flooding, serious disruption.

Only in parts of the downtown area. But yes, overall, it's a big disruption.
