I use vapor barrier liner HotSac VBL from Western Mountaineering. To be honest even after 5 days ski touring in cold temps I haven't noticed that my sleeping bag lost much of insulation to internal condensation. I do let it dry every morning and if weather allows shake it well outside. Moisture will freeze into crystals and can be shaken off. However I did use my VBL to sleep warmer when temperature dropped down suddenly below my sleeping bag range and it worked, not very comfortable though.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with using vapor barrier liner. Great to hear that the liner can increase the temperature rating of the sleeping system. Is that because of the reflective material you think?
Our body constantly sweats and vapor cools us down. VPL decreases natural sweating making us warmer. Also my liner can be tighten around my neck and keeps warm air inside.@@HikingHansen
Basically I carry my VBL with me(it's only 100 g) as emergency bivy and when I needed, it worked. Small price to pay for safety on multi day hike in Hardangervidda or similar wilderness where weather can change quickly.@@HikingHansen
-20 is cold, I can definitely agree upon that ☺️ Everything comes down to the gear in these conditions, and some experience, off course 😊 You should come and join me for a adventure some day 🏕️
@@HikingHansen it would be great to join you Mads, but it would have to be a summer adventure 😂😂😂! I’m too old for cold weather like that 🥶 I loved the Hare tracks through the fresh snow ❄️ magical 👍
Hey Mads, another great video :) Did you use jervenduk exclusive? With or without the primaloft 60g/170g? I was thinking of using what you used here (excluding VBL) with an exclusive + 60 vattering. Nice to be able to seperate the jervenduk from the primaloft to get rid of some condensation when it's cold, with the hunter it just kind of gets stuck between the layers... could get wet/heavy/stinky depending on how long the trip is.
Thanks 😊 I used the extreme version. In my experience Fjellduk in combination with a sleeping bag doesn’t create that much condensation. Of course, if you’re on a long trip that might be the case. I’m also considering the option to put Jervenduken inside the sleeping bag. It will work as a VBL, but I’m not sure how it will work over time 🤔
When and why would you feel you need to use this instead of just the sleeping bag? Did your baselayers feel wet in the morning? What happened when you got out of the bag?
I think this will be a part of my sleeping system on multi day hikes in the winter season in combination with a bivi bag. The baselayer didn’t feel wet, only a bit damp. No problem getting out of the bag 😊
Hey Hansen, thanks for the super cool video ! I haven't used a bivy bag yet but i'm definitely going to try it out soon, north pole explorers use them so I guess it has to be useful ^^' I have an unrelated question tho : I recognised the Helsport Svalbard High 3 Camp tent in one of your other videos, do you know if it can be rolled up on the pulka with poles folded in half like the tunnel tents ? I have to choose a tent for my next adventure and this is definitely a big criteria for me I think
I have the Helsport Svalbard High 3 Camp tent and no, unfortunately it's not possible to do that like the tunnel tents. You could do it by leaving the front and rear poles in (folded), but the two center cross-sectional poles that form the upper X would have to be removed.
Thanks 😃 We were using the Svalbard 6p tent, but since the construction is similar to the 3p we had to pack it down every day. I recently bought the Spitsbergen 4p tent. It’s ideal for semi pitched transportation on the pulk.
I haven't used a VBL, but I plan to do so. Even on short winter trips, I notice quite a lot of moisture gets trapped as frost in my bag and there is no way to dry it out during daytime (wintertime north of the Arctic Circle). I am curious about how to regulate warmth when using a VLB. I use a WM Kodiak that is fine down to -15 C, but below that, I have to wear extra insulating clothing to stay warm. That won't work with a VLB since my insulating clothing would get damp. So how do you manage that with a VBL?
VBL will make your bag warmer if you sleep in a base layer. I prefer to use synthetic quilt to extend my sleeping bags range. I have +10C quilt from Enlightened equipment(380g), combining it with my 0F/-10C bag(something like Kodiak) I can go down to -20-25C. You can find combining info table on Enlightened Q&A. Extra plus is that condensation will be on the quilt and not on the down bag, keeping it dryer.
Interesting that you address the question about extra insulation layers. I have been thinking about the same thing. In really cold conditions I would like to wear my WM Flight pants while sleeping, but that’s not an option with the VBL. I guess the solution is a quilt (as Vladimir points out), fjellduk or insulation layer with no VBL.
I'm going to be homeless again soon, by myself this time (yeah, Happy New Year to me eh). I need one of those bags as I won't have a wood stove to keep warm in a tent like before or I'll freeze to death.
Nice to get out and test some gear. Thanks for the video!
Have you guys tried sleeping in a vapor barrier bag before? Any reflections?

That’s a nice feature. I slept with the line loose around my neck. It was a warm night with both the liner, WM bag and the fjellduk.

Modellen heter Brage 2.0 😊
Whats your sleeping bag?
Western Mountaineering Antelope GWS.

Can't make sense of what you are saying at all. Maybe it's time to learn a new language😂
That makes sense. I think I put in English subtitles though ☺️
