- Milwaukee Brewers 7 at Baltimore Orioles 0, F -- Juan Nieves wrote the story and Robin Yount supplied the exclamation mark to one of the most exciting games in Brewers history. Nieves became the first Brewer and the first Puerto Rican-born Major Leaguer to toss a no-hitter when he blanked the Orioles on a cold night at Memorial Stadium, a game that ended on center fielder Yount's now-legendary catch of an Eddie Murray line drive in right-center field.
Brewers have always been such a fun team, win or lose.
Man, the amount of talent on the field that day was mind blowing. Between Ripken, Murray, Molitor, and Yount, they would end their careers with a combined 12,900 hits, 1,420 home runs, 6,325 RBI, and 37 All Star appearances. Wow.
yankeecrazy9 that's quite the statistic. That's not even with the coaching staffs....
1995 World Series. On just the Indians, you had Vizquel, Murray, Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, and Kenny Lofton. 3 of those are Hall of Famers and 2 of them should be.
The best part: Paschke never -- NEVER -- mentions Nieves has a no-no going until after Yount's catch. Amazing.
Dan Pfeifer you.could tell Paschke was getting excited at the end of eighth inning though sensing Nieves possible Nono
The only problem with that is if you just turned on the game you never would have known what was going on unless you caught the linescore between innings.
I noticed that, too! These days they start talking about no-hitter in the fourth inning.
@@jpsned When Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in World Series history, he tried talking about it, but his Yankee teammates just moved to the other end of the dugout. So that's just one example of a pitcher talking about a no hitter and getting it.
Four years after this game Flanagan was one of four pitchers to combine on a no hitter against Oakland. A's haven't been no hit since. Who wants to be the first? I highly doubt Oakland will go 50 years between no hitters like the Chicago Cubs did.
I went to high school with the Brewers' catcher, Bill Schroeder. Two hits, a run scored and he called a no-hitter! I'd say he had a good day. 👍
I had high hopes for Schroeder in '87. He batted .332 with 14 HR in just 250 AB. That season turned out to be a fluke for him.
@@Wallyworld30 Doesn't he do Brewers' color commentating now?
@@jpsned I can tell you anything about Brewers and MLB from 1994 and earlier. When Paul Molitor left town because MLB has no salary cap I completely quit MLB. I went from being their #1 Fan to not being able to care less. It's a sport rigged for large market teams. I'm still a Die Hard Bucks and Packer fan though. I did peek in to watch Bonds/Sosa/McGuire Homerun Era and when that ended I stopped for good.
@@jpsned Yes he does.

There are two things I remember well about this game. I was a college student at UW-Oshkosh at the time. My roommate asked if I thought the Brewers would continue their winning streak to begin the season. I said I thought Juan Nieves was too inconsistent and felt they would lose. Then that night, watching the game, it was an unseasonably warm day/night that day. We had the door open. When Robin caught that final out, I was so excited. I walked to the door and opened it, hoping to people celebrating. I heard screams all over the neighborhood. I'll never forget it.
Nieves was on fire with a very special and individual slider - AMAZING. he knew exactly what he was doing, the coaches questioning him while executing a no hitter were completely and totally wrong...Greg Brock! Molitor and Yount, Molitor led the team. Paciorek with an amazing catch started it all off. the defensive plays handed Nieves this. as it should be in baseball.
That catch by Yount for the last out has to be one of the most clutch defensive plays in MLB history.
That was the greatest play in his incredible career! He made a diving stab to save a NoNo! It made the moment that much better!
Great game, one of the most historic in Brewer history. Jaun was on!
RIP Mike Hegan
I remember this game like it was yesterday. I watched it on TV until bedtime and listened to the rest on the Radio from 7th inning on. Bob Uecker and his partner were losing their minds on the radio. After the no Hitter I ran downstairs and my dad was yelling that unbelievable! He said "These Stupid TV announcers didn't even mention that Juan Nieves was running a No Hitter the entire game! ". Looking back at this broadcast I can see exactly what he was saying.
Do I EVER remember this night! But I have to admit, the first thought that came to my mind when Yount made the game-ending catch was, "Did he really HAVE to dive to make that catch?" LOL!
Same
8194 games played in Brewers franchise history (as of 2020). This is the only no-hitter
Brewers just got another one! Finally.
@@jkbezo1 Meh. It’s not the same if it’s not one pitcher going the entire game.
Nobody better to call it than current TV voice of the Bucks, Jim Paschke!
Nieves pitch count in the game was 128. Very unlikely a young pitcher like that would have been able to finish a game like that today which is too bad.
I grew up a die hard Brewer fan and played on my high school team but stopped watching in mid 90's after Yount/Gantner retired and Molitor left town. Never went back. Would they really take a pitcher out of the game that is pitching a NoNo?
Awesome. Mention of John Counsell around 29:00. Craig's dad
What a catch by Yount to end it 😎
Yount with the TV dive to save it
Danno Mack imagine the criticism if the ball had come out of his glove because of the impact.
Nieves was only 21-22 here but didn’t pitch after 1988. Did he get hurt?
Tragic Career ending injury. I don't remember the specifics though.
Today my mom just decided to casually tell me that she was actually at this game. Like, what am supposed to make of that not so small tidbit of information?! History was made at this game!!
And then his arm fell off. I remember this game very clearly as well as the incredibly weird almost no hitter for the Brewers in 1988. Odell Jones In his first MLB start since 1981 who didn’t pitch in MLB for more than 2 years and hadn’t gone more than 5 since 1982 was perfect through 7 gave up 2 hits in the 9th
Wow, the finish
Six weeks later,Juan Nieves cracked up when he looked into the box seats at Cleveland and saw ALF sitting in the seat next to me.That night,Paul Molitor threw a ball over the roof during infield practice.
That's how it should be. A no-no shouldn't even be discussed until the 8th inning.
My father was pissed off bigtime they didn't mention the NoNo until after it was over. Radio guys were going nuts in the 7th.
two things you don't see much of anymore in MLB:
1. Stirrups
2. guys wearing undershirts
This video should be titled "Kermit the Frog calls Brewers 1st no-hitter"
+gimmeareasonelmo but I love jim paschke
RIP Mike Flanagan.
Gerhart did hit a home run off Nieves in third inning (40:00), if where two fans tracking it down was any indication...
Kurt Crowley damn , you’re right about that. Clearly looks like a HR
Umpires (3:48)
HP Jim Evans (CC)
1B Nick Bremigan
2B Al Clark
3B Derryl Cousins
Cal Ripken, Orioles Head Coach lol...I too caught that...btw, I'm at the 7th inning and are they gonna start talking about this no-hit bid, or...?
Una pregunta Juan nieve es México
Hello!
Your baseball game collection is truly impressive. 🙂⚾️
By chance do you have game 3 and/or game 4 from the 1981 ALDS between the Brewers and Yankees?
Thank you!
Jeff
RIP Mike Flanagan
Baltimore went in the toilet after their 83 World Series team. They were dreadful by this point.
Mention of John Counsell at 29:10 or so. That'd be Craig's dad...
cottagechskitty: His son is now the manager of the Brewers.
His son has two of the most important plate crossings of any games... (Marlins '97, Diamondbacks '01)
29:07
now the pitching coach of my Boston Red Sox!
