Here's 2017 GFA-ICAC first-prize winner "TY" Tengyue Zhang performing "Les Sauvages" from Jean-Philippe Rameau's "Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin" on a 2020 Carlos Juan Busquiel classical guitar made with cedar top and African rosewood back and sides. Recorded at the Guitar Salon International showroom in Santa Monica, CA.

A phenomenal and exciting performance which exemplifies the evolution of Baroque music interpretation on the guitar. Simply put, this kind of guitar playing would have been unimaginable during the years of Segovia, Williams, Bream, Yepes, etc. In the 1980s, with the appearence of Manuel Barrueco and especially David Russell (not forgetting Hubert Kappel's groundbreaking recording of a Bach keyboard partita) and his Handel and Baroque recordings, guitar players started interpreting Baroque music with keyboard clarity, well rounded sound and special attention to the contrapuntal lines and independent voices: consequently, new transcriptions (and historically informed renditions) were incorporated into the repertoire that would have seemed impossible in former times (perhaps Christopher Parkening's great Bach album is the last of the romantic school). Russell also was influential in his crisp cross-string ornamentation which Mr. Zhang pulls off so effortlesly and beautiful here: this is the new sound of Baroque music on the guitar and the level of technical perfection here is amazing.
A benchmark performance by one of the world's finest guitarrists and musicians. It is wonderful to see this generation of such talent from Asia playing Western classical music with such consumate artistry and understanding and expanding the possibiities of the guitar.
Tengyue is a master. Impeccable dynamics, tempo, clarity. Fantastic performance!

This is probably the best classical guitar playing I’ve ever heard in my life - and I’ve been both playing and listening now for over 35 years.
Damn man... so smooth, accurate and precise... and the tone... perfection.
I am delighted with the appropriateness with which this guy makes the style that the famous Rondeau belongs to. You have to know how to do it to make these embellishments so appropriate. And then, he does not abandon the sense of dance, with the basses always well-timed and the slight inegalité of the eighth notes. The key is the right one (D min from the original G min). Best wishes for a thriving career!

A glorious document. Although they both involve plucking, the exigencies in harpsichord and guitar playing are very different. In this interpretation, the aspects to the composition that involve the harpsichord idiom are respected utterly, no mean feat! But the instrument is not imitated as such. Instead its gestures are convincingly transferred to the new instrument, subsuming them to perfection.

E poi, non abbandona il senso della danza, coi bassi sempre ben cadenzati e la leggera inegalité delle crome. La tonalità è quella giusta (Re min dall'originale Sol min). Auguri d'una fiorente carriera!
